Anything on the OHSAA Board meeting agenda today about cross country or track & field? Next regular meeting is not until June…

It is interesting that they can state attendance and profits for regional and state competitions in volleyball, soccer and football, but no information from cross country yet. four regional sites and one state site, how hard can that be to total and report?

No attendance figures, but the financial figures were reported in the January meeting minutes.

hmmm...

The OHSAA does not have a profit motive, so I wonder what the surplus from XC is going to change. Maybe fund an expansion of spring football?

First time I looked at that report as well.

Anyone have a guess, or better than a guess, as to why the State Cross Country meet more than doubled it's net profit this year compared to last?

This was the first time in a whole bunch of years that the OHSAA didn't have to eat the profits of the state meet in covering the regional meets. In the mid 80's they charged admission to the regionals in 2 (Lancaster and I believe Boardman) but Troy and Tiffin were free.

But why list state, regional and total as separate line items? I know they've always lost a TON of money on the regional meets, but is the "state cross country" line item meant to represent regionals as well. even though the line item above that specifically says "regional cross country?"

It is confusing, but in the new post today they do the same thing with the other fall sports, post regional and state attendance no's and net profits.

Regarding the three lines for cross country...

The Regional line includes all profits and expenses associated solely with the four regional meets. The State line includes all profits and expenses associated solely with the state meet. The Total line is the sum of these two lines, plus any profits (likely 0) and minus expenses that are shared by the five meets.

I can't explain why the State line increased so much. I haven't been to the meet in two years, so I don't know what might have changed.

That was how I read it as well. Thank you for the clarification.

So it's a mystery why the state meet itself did so much better this year. Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not complaining! Just curious.

I've been there the last three years and seven of the last eight and haven't noticed a significant different, minus the venue change of course.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be visible to the public.

For instance, it may be that there were capital costs incurred by NT in order to host the meet in the first place. The OHSAA and National Trail agreed that the OHSAA would pay some of these costs over the first 4 years and that time has passed.

That's just speculation, but it's an example of the type of thing that would show up as increased profits in a year-to-year comparison.

That's a good guess. There may have been some course equipment that needed to be purchased the first few years (flags, rubber mats, materials for the ramp over the drag strip, dirt, etc, etc) that did not need to be repurchased or replaced.

i believe that NTR contract was for 5 years and is up after this next year. What the OHSAA should do is take profit from the CC meets and buy land and create a CC course and over the next 20 years they would basically cut the cost of running it to nothing.
