OHSAA meeting

Was there the a meeting at the OHSAA office this week dealing with cross country issues? What did they talk about?

Also, the OHSAA decided to have the Competitive Balance Plan to Commence with New Enrollment Cycle in 2017-18

Roster data in affected sports to be collected during 2016-17 school year to apply to following season

The Competitive balance plan I don't believe will affect track/cross country, right? I hope so, as we've already found our "competitive balance"; about 16 percent of schools (teams/individuals) represented at the past state cross country meet was private. So privates don't really have an advantage here.

that topic did not come up at all at the state clinic yesterday. Coaches association only has 2 things on their plate right now for our sports.

Expanding the number of qualifiers in CC to 5 teams and 20 individuals.

Adding upwards of 3 divisions in track to make it 6.

My understanding is there were about a dozen plus people (coaches, ADs, principals, superintendents and track/CC board members) met with Dale Gabor last Wed at the OHSAA office. Most talked about the problems with combined enrollment. The Track and Cross Country board overwhelming think combined enrollment has caused more issues/problems than the one it tried to solve.

In the discussion the issue about coaching came up and most thought that coaching should be a local school board issue not a State issue.
The issue of Fair and Equitable came up: such as 64 boys schools with more boys were Division II while a school with 62% girls was forced to run DI; Two girls schools moved down from DI to DII because of fewer boys while one school with more boys their girls team was forced to move to DII thus a traditional "Normal" D III school was forced to compete against traditional "Normal" DI schools in the District: the number of schools and athletes negatively affected when moved from their "Normal" Division.
The economy was mentioned as a reason for combined enrollment, but it was pointed out basketball increased the number of games they could play during this time as well as schools could still play preseason/exhibition games. So the question was asked how could a person use finance as an issue to send a few teams program to different site for one event.

After 4 hours Dale Gabor said this is good but nothing can be done next year and another meeting is schedule for the Spring.

The above information was provided to me by people at the meeting, from coaches who were told information from their school's representative at the meeting and Dugan Hill when he spoke at the OATCCC General Membership meeting Thursday night.

It was also said expanding the number of qualifiers in CC to the State meet will probably not happen until combined enrollment is resolved.

How realistic is it for these two items to gain any traction and move forward with the OHSAA to become a reality? I am definitely in favor expanding the qualifiers in CC. I've heard the talk about adding a 4th division in track, but adding 3 more to make 6---that seems a bit too much to become possible?

Others thoughts?
