4 Divisions

So now that the state will make an obvious profit on CC this year with money being made at Regionals where they finally realize that a 4th division only increases the revenue stream and improves the fastest growing sport they have?

Right now to win a state title you have to beat over 200 schools in your division. That's about 50-60 more then any other sport and double what football is.

Don't care how they do it. Split them evenly, create a Super DI....... its pretty simple here and its time for someone to really push them. Someone needs to make them listen.

A few things that need to be done:

1. Change the time schedule. These state and regional races only need 25-30 minutes between them. The post season schedule is ridiculous. 4 hours to run 6 races is stupid.
2. Reduce your overhead. Stop paying for all those officials. Not sure how much they pay but I would guess that each region and the state meet is costing upwards of $20,000 for officials.

Biggest expense is the timing crew. No way they have anywhere close to $20,000 for officials at each site.

Been saying this for years. They should have the same number of kids in each division, not the same number of schools.

Never going to happen unless we get 751 schools entering in and running in the district meet. (Last year there were 641.) So unless that number changes, no 4 divisions. (Unless it's football.)

And by the way, it has to be stay that way for at least 2 consecutive years.
(Not sure how the counting gets done with combined enrollment if you have for example a boys team and no girls team.)

Rule 16.2 of the General Sports Regulations of the OHSAA.

With combined enrollment the three divisions are very far from balanced especially for girls.

We should have 4 divisions in track if they would take every school that has a team even if there are not 9 on the team. This year I think 289 is now Division I going against 1,400..

Cross Country biggest issue is combined enrollment and the disparity among the number of girls teams in a division.

Lacrosse will probably have two divisions next year when it becomes an OHSAA sport (even though there are fewer than 130 teams). Use to be you needed 250 schools to add a second division - like to see what the OHSAA says to justify 2 divisions.

Sorry about that. I even read it a second time before I posted and still read it wrong. I didn't think that even you were that crazy.

looking at the smaller schools in each division (likely the ones that would benefit) it would make the competition at the end of the year alot closer then it has been.

Divisions are for the weak. It is called the state meet. Every high school in Ohio competes against each other.

Instead of three weeks of playoffs with divisions, add a couple more weeks of playoffs with no divisions. A semi-regional and semi-state before (finals) of the state meet.

I doubt they add a 4th division for cross country. There are currently 641 programs - which would mean approx 160 per division. That would be the lowest per division sport, with the exception of football, and the two division sports.

I understand this issue with combined enrollment, but I doubt the OHSAA is going to add a division.

Who knows - I could be wrong.

Did you not see wrestling? They have 3 divisions with only around 130 in them.

When the state realizes that there is $ to be made, they will put in a 4th division. THats the only reason why we have 4+ divisions in the other sports.

Actually, the sports that have 4 divisions all have 750 teams or more, which is what they (the OHSAA) told the track and cross country coaches for years, in order to gain the 4th division.

Wrestling has 497 teams - 3 divisions
Softball has 748 teams - 4 divisions (2015) but had 760 a few seasons back.
Girls Cross Country has 641 (questionable number) teams and 3 divisions.

Football doesn't count (it is the fatted calf for the OHSAA).

Just to stir the pot a little bit. I was just looking up results from the Florida state meet this past weekend. They have 4 divisions and 24 teams in each division at the state meet. That would be 96 teams compared to our 48 teams.

How about four divisions in track? Unlike for combined enrollment this might be a place where a title IX suit might work. The most popular girls sport is being held to an arbitrary standard (9 athletes to count as a team) that might be preventing a fourth division from happening.

It is also interesting to see middle school kids running at the state meet. My understanding is that if lower grades are at the same building they can participate with high school. In the 1A race, I think that is smaller schools, there were 5 middle school kids(2 in 8th, 2 in 7th, and 1 in 6th) in the top 16 overall, 19:14-19:50.

That was girls, by the way. Sorry, I am home sick and bored. Winning girls team in 1A went 7th, 12th, 8th, 12th, 8th, 9th, 7th grade.
