Struthers Football 2018

The Cats have a good amount of talent returning/coming up.

Offense
QB: JD Hall, SR
FB: Robert Tomko, JR
TB: Willie Mitchell, SR... Keyshawn Chism, SR... Adrian Brown, JR... Dylan Donnadio, JR
WR: Tommy Kopnicky, SR... Kevin Caldwell, SR... Keith Burnside, SR
TE: Brandon Serrano, JR
OT: Jake Vlosich, JR
OG: Brandon Kistler, SR... Marcel Walker, JR
C: Deckland Seckel, JR

Offensively, the only losses are Stefanski, Richards and Adams. Everyone else will be back and should only be better.
On the OL, maybe move Walker from LG over to LT and Seckel from C over to LG. Keep the right side as is with Vlosich at RT and Kistler at RG. And insert Lucente at C. The OL really struggled when Iarussi went down last year. With 4 starters returning, the OL can go from a weakness to a strength. They have the talent in the backfield to make another run at the playoffs, but it all starts with the OL. I'd really like the pass blocking to improve.
Serrano could have a breakout season at TE. Burnside might be better off playing H-back or fullback, similar to Deem's role in 2015. Caldwell started a couple games at the X when Adams was out and played a lot in 3 WR sets. Kopnicky was the #2 WR last year. I still think it'd be extremely counter productive to not play Hawkins at receiver, but we'll see what happens.
RB is probably the deepest position on the team. Unless he works hard on conditioning in the off-season, I think it'd be a good idea to limit Mitchell's carries... especially early in the season. Chism, Brown and Donnadio can definitely carry the load against Liberty, Jefferson, Campbell and Edgewood... and probably Niles. Save Mitchell for the tougher games and let him focus on defense.
Hall had an up and down season. He needs to cut back on the turnovers. Improved OL play would be a big help.

Defense
DE: Serrano
DT: none
LB: Mitchell... Burnside... Tomko
S: Brown
CB: Kopnicky... Ty Hawkins, JR

Defensively, the Cats are hit a little harder than they are on offense. But still have a solid group coming back. They lose 2 2 year starters at DT in Santana and Bloomberg. Adams was also a 2 year starter at safety. And 2 3 year starters at DE and LB in Calabrette and Richards. They still have 7 starters back on defense.
Serrano is the only one back on the DL. Kistler didn't play defense last year, but did play quite a bit at DE in 2016. Maybe he'll go back to the strong side 6 technique he played in 2016 and Serrano will flip sides to the back side 5 technique. Mitchell could also play some DE, too. I'm not sure who will take over inside on the DL.
The linebackers figure to be Mitchell and Tomko inside and Burnside outside. Burnside could play inside if Mitchell plays DE... and Donnadio or Chism could play OLB.
3/4 are back in the secondary. I like Hawkins better at FS than CB. Insert Durken at CB in his place and keep Brown at SS and Kopnicky at the opposite CB and that's a really strong secondary.

I really see a lot of potential in the offense. If the line can up their game from last year, the offense should have little trouble putting up points. Especially if they can make some big plays in the passing game to keep things balanced.
And the back 7 on defense should be solid. If Bayuk can figure out the DL and get penetration without blitzing so much, the defense could be on par with or better than the 2013 and 2016 defenses.

Half the schedule is really good... the other half, not so much. Crestview, Canfield, Poland, Hubbard and Lakeview all have a lot returning, and all except Hubbard made the playoffs last year.
Poland loses the most of those 5. Then Canfield. Crestview and Hubbard probably have the most returning.

Liberty loses almost everyone. Jefferson, Campbell and Edgewood are all pretty bad. Campbell does have some talent, but they have to find a new head coach and hire an entire coaching staff.
Niles is something of an unknown to me. They got the coach they wanted, and they have a lot coming back. But they weren't very good. How much of that was coaching?

That's all I have for now. I'm sure Spread can make any corrections if I got anything wrong.

I don't know. I hope it's not true. I have no idea what they have coming back on defense, but I think they have most of their offense back... including that #9 who caught everything in Struthers last year, their 2 best running backs and an All State lineman. The only one not coming back, on offense anyway, is their QB.

Why would they back out?

Does Howland have week 2 open? They're not playing Boardman anymore. They'd be a good week 2 opponent. No reason why Howland shouldn't be on the schedule every year regardless.

I would rather have howland then crestview, we overlooked crestview big time last year and almost paid for it, won't happen this year, plus that QB was tough, he made big time throws to #9

Offensive line there’s a kid named Feletti who was the “next man up” last season. He will be a sophomore. He is very big and can play. Not sure if Lucente plays over him. He’s a tackle type kid. So I could see Declan staying at center. Walker and Vlosich are going to be very good and have both grown astronomically lol.

Jd hall is very good. Will be the best qb in the conference next season with Kostco.

RBs obviously the strength of the team.

FB - Tomko Serrano

The schedule is the same as of now. I did also hear about crestview wanting to drop us. Which is a good idea for them because they will lose. But this opens up the possibility of a sixth home game.

But I agree the defensive line will be a big concern. They will
Lack real depth.

I don’t like how the schedule is. Half of the schedule is PROJECTED to be very bad. This doesn’t bode well for playoff points. The other half is very good.

Keep an eye for hawkins this season. Hopefully he is in the slot.

Donnadio could have a breakout year.

Mitchell needs to get in good shape this season to be able to go both ways, and stop worrying about his college offers and just play ball.

What about Monaco playing The other DE spot and I could also seen him playing thigt end on offense to.

That kid needs to put some more weight on to even entertain that thought imo. Varsity football is a huge step up from JV.

I'm thinkin Filleti and Vlosich at OT. Walker and Seckel at guard. And Lucente at center. Luch is comparable in size to Dan Dudley, maybe even a little bigger. He can play center and Seckel can move to RG for Kistler. And Kistler can focus on defense. All 5 starters would be back in 2019, too.
However it shakes out, the O-line will be better this year.

I knew I'd be overlooking a few kids.

The c/o 2021 appears to have some good size, but not very deep. And you weren't very stoked on that class. I didn't think they'd have any starters already. Any other potential starters or key reserves from that class? Maybe Collins?
I think the younger Hall could be the backup QB... might ease coach's decision about whether or not to play Hawkins in the slot.

I like Serrano at fullback... especially if Monaco emerges at tight-end.

I'm not too worried about defensive end. They have depth there. Serrano, Kistler, Seckel, Monaco, Mitchell... they have depth. Inside at DT... maybe Barganier, Carcelli, Walker, Filleti, Vlosich in a rotation?

Ya class of 21 is bare as they come. 22 however is decent.
Those dt’s You named/ everyone but the first two you named.

They will be fine. Just really need more depth that can play at the varsity level.

Also week 2 the following Valley schools are open
Girard
Salem
Howland?
South range
And far out Perry and Conneaut.

If crestview drops us, one of them is nice.

Girard would be interesting, too. I would probably rather play them than South Range.

Howland, Salem or Girard. If it's Howland or Salem, a multiyear deal could be worked out. Struthers has week 2 still Open for 2019 and beyond. Gerard and South Range would only be one year deals.

Anyone have any insight from either the coach or Nancy what's actually going on with the Crestview situation?
Would be nice to get one of the ones listed as being open. In particular: Howland, Salem, Girard.
Don't think we want Conneaut on anymore after those last two games. No competition or points. Useless game.

Conneaut has actually been a pretty good harbin point team the last few years now that they're playing all those PA schools and winning. In fact, they have won at least 5 games every year since 2013. Easy win and good points.
