Countdown

The countdown for the Dayton Flyers 2013 season is well underway with Monday, August 5th being the start of summer camp.

There is plenty of excitement about finally getting connected with another Ohio Div.1 school for the opening game. Dayton will be at Youngstown State for a Thursday night game on August 32st.

The campus will be abuzz on Saturday Oct. 19th when the first home night game (actually evening) in 9 years will start at 6:00pm. San Diego will be at Dayton and the league frowns on night games because it adds another day to travel expenses. (students should be awake in time for this start!)

Former Comets Ryan Schwenke #9 and Cory Stuart #83 should see more playing time this season.

Finally, it was not all sweat work for last year's Flyer football guys. They worked hard in the classroom too and their APR (Academic Progress Rate) was 5th in the nation for D-1 programs behind Northwestern, Davidson, Yale & Boise State.

A Touch of Practice

It has been fun following all the "details" that the 110 Flyer Footballers encountered each day of fall camp & here are some to share with you.

They have the 2-minute drill, the backed-up, the four-minute, the overtime & other drills. The one Coach Chamberlin has made famous is the Sudden Change! It is beneficial for coaches & players. Only he knows when the Managers will blow the horns, usually in the middle of a unit or individual workout. Offense & defense run to opposite sidelines. Coaches call out their unit members & strategy. Ball is placed at 28 yd. line & asst. coaches know their refereeing assignments & who keeps the clock.

A scrimmage ensues until a score or a stop at which time the general practice resumes!

After the first week they were bussed to Athletes in Action Sports Complex in Zinia, OH for a practice in different surroundings - like a road game. Of course the "Sudden Change" horns blew once and they practiced many game-like situations.

The 2013 weather has often been agreeable with coaches wearing long sleeves one early morning. They have a grass practice field or the turf at Welcome Stadium- both a short walk from the lockers. Coach Chamberlin sometimes has them warming-up in the stadium to music; usually his favorites from the 70's. Last week he surprised them with a mix of today's hits! This was the second year they mixed at a dinner with the UD Marching Band to get to know a few members of the "other group".

The day with the Kicking Scrimmage was most fascinating to me. They just had KO's, KO returns, punts, punt returns & field goals the whole session! There is a complicated scoring routine after four punts without a TD and somehow one team won 19-11 last week!

Saturday was Move-In day for campus Freshman so the "boyz" helped carry stuff to dorms from 6:30am to 11:30am, then had a 2:00pm practice followed by a 6:45pm scrimmage for the frosh & parents. They viewed the film at 9:45pm unit meetings & were surprised with Chick-fil-A treats to cap their wonderful, busy day. So much for being a young athlete! Remember, they'll all be at Youngstown State on Thursday, Aug. 29th at 7:30pm!

Two Former Comets start at Youngstown game

Ryan Schwenke, #30, will start at the FYR [Flyer] position (a hybrid linebacker/DB) and Cory Stuart, #83, a redshirt last season will play in his first game & start at SE receiver in the opener at Youngstown State. Stuart starts in place of the leading receiver who will not play for disciplinary reasons; good opportunity for Cory!

FIRST-TIME STARTERS
The Flyers had a glut of injuries in 2012 that resulted in 45 starts
missed by players who were considered starters in the pre-season. The
other side of that coin is that UD has 22 players back this season who
have previous starting experience. Still, four Dayton players will be
making their first collegiate start at Youngstown State -- center Grant
Georgic, guard Jimmy Vogel, slot receiver Gabe Macis and wideout
Cory Stuart. It will be Vogelís and Stuartís first action in college.

The game is Thursday, 7:30, at YSU.

Penguins Out-muscle Flyers 28-10

Dayton owned Time of Possession & even out-passed Youngstown but the YSU line - "O" & "D"- got enough scores & enough stops to win.

Former Comet Ryan Schwenke had 6 tackles and a diving intercept, perhaps all in the first half. Didn't see him much later.

In his first start as a Red Shirt Freshman, Cory Stuart showed well with 3 passes caught for 26 yards.

The game was a good test for Dayton with a well-regarded Duquesne team coming to UD next week.

23-20 Dayton Beats Duquesne

In a mild upset, the Flyers beat the Dukes for the first time in the career of the UD seniors!

Both teams had a couple TD's but Dayton was 3-3 on Field Goals by their Frosh place kicker.

Ryan Schwenke was credited with 4 tackles but it was his first half interception that excited me!

Cory Stuart had 5 receptions for 39 yards with his last one being a bobbling grab for a 1st down on the winning drive!

O.T......Rich Piekarski played well for Duquesne.

Next Saturday noon the Flyers will be on the field near Pittsburgh for the annual battle with the wild & furious Robert Morris group!

Schwenke & Stuart Could Play Key Roles Saturday Night

DAYTON FOOTBALL WELCOMES SAN DIEGO IN RARE PFL NIGHT GAME

PDF Game Notes

The University of Dayton football team will play its first night home game against a Pioneer Football League opponent in 10 seasons Saturday when the San Diego Toreros visit Welcome Stadium. Game time is 6:00 p.m. ET.
While a night game in the PFL is a rare thing, a critical league game between Dayton and USD is anything but. In the 20-year history of the PFL, the Flyers or the Toreros have won the league title 20 times.
Saturday's game will play true to form. San Diego is undefeated in three games in PFL play (4-2 overall), while Dayton is one game back at 2-1 (4-2 overall).
Dayton won five of its last six games in 2012 to finish the year 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the Pioneer Football League. It was UD's 35th winning season in 36 years as a non-scholarship program.

GOOD NEWS WORTH REPEATING
The Flyers entered the season with the third-best winning percentage (.762, 109-34) in FCS football since 2000 AND the most football Academic All-Americans (22) at any level of competition in the same time frame. The top five are Harvard (.775), Montana (.769), Dayton (.762), Appalachian State (.739) and North Dakota State (.710).

STREAKING
UD has not been shut out in an NCAA-record 414 straight games, the best such active string in all of college football. The last team to shut out UD was Marshall, 9-0, on Oct. 16, 1976.

RYAN'S HANDS
Ryan Schwenke, who plays the hybrid linebacker/safety position called "Flyer" in the Dayton defensive system, has shown a nose for the ball in his move into the starting lineup. The soph's three interceptions are tied for first in the PFL. He is also third on the team in tackles (33).

STEW
Redshirt freshman wideout Cory Stuart had eight catches for 65 yards in the first two games, and then missed the last two games with an injury. He now has 10 for 85.

Dayton upsets San Diego in 2-OT

Pre-game comment: In the 20-year history of the PFL, the Flyers or the Toreros have won the league title 20 times.

Saturday night was a thriller with Dayton coming back to tie with seconds remaining. Then in first OT, USD scored on one play. UD used some hard running. Second OT, Dayton again used some tough running while University of San Diego tried passing. (They seemed tired...maybe the travel was getting to them...or the cold weather) Final was UD-45 USD-38

As suspected previous, both of the former Comets had key roles in the win.

Ryan Schwenke credited with 9 tackles.

Cory Stuart caught 4 passes for 37yds and two of them for first downs.

Friday is a bus ride to Morehead State in Kentucky (actually they may stay in Lexington area and work out there Friday afternoon)

Dayton-42 Morehead State-14

Former Comet, RS Freshman Cory Stuart, grabbed 2 more passes & now totals 16 for his first season of activity on a heavily-laden Junior/Senior team.

UD won in Kentucky at Morehead by scoring 28 unanswered points after MS tied the game at 14-14 early in the second half. Four teams are now in a First Place tie - Dayton, Butler, Marist & San Diego. The Flyers have been jelling on offense & defense which belies the 5th place ranking where their Conference preseason coaches poll had placed them.

Next Staurday is the Flyers last home game with first place on the line as the Butler Bulldogs arrive for the !:00pm Senior Day game.

A Dream Evaporates...Future Blurry

In the pregame, the parents lined the home side of Welcome Stadium Field as the 26 senior footballers were introduced. With spirits high, the team took a 27-6 lead with 2:44 left in the first half.

Butler is one of the four teams tied for 1st place and they got a halftime pep talk that changed the day & put them into the lead 30-27 with 12:17 left in the game. Dayton tied at 30-30 but lost their second conference game 33-30 as well as losing their QB & two RB's. With two away games left, the finish line is blurry what with those offensive injuries.

Cory Suart had 3 pass receptions for 23 yds. Ryan Schwenke had a solo & 4 assisted tackles - need about double that next game.

Next Saturday the boys will be in Des Moines, IA to play Drake.

Wheels Come Off in Second half

Down at the half - 10-13 - at Drake, the Flyers had multiple problems the 2nd half and lost 10-36. Now with a 6-4 record - 4-3 in the PFL - it will be pride on the line in Saturday's final at Valparaiso.

Cory Stuart had 3 receptions for 23 yards. Several other passes his way were badly thrown by the fill-in QB.

Ryan Schwenke was credited with one solo tackle...

One player had a great game, DE Pat Down (St. Ignatius) had 6 solo SACKS and was PFL Defensive Player of the Week.

Smile UD wins with TD's in 4 different ways

UD won their final game beating Valparaiso 45-20 by scoring TD's by rushing, passing, intercepting & KO returning. Oh, they had Field Goals & X-points too.

So the 2013 season comes to a close with a 7-4 record, 5-3 in PFL Conference for a 4th place tie. It also ends the second season for the two former Solon Comets. In the game:

Cory Stuart had another pass for 14 yds & Ryan Schwenke had 2 solo & 2 asst tackles.

After the month of December off, winter training with lifting & running begins in early January.

Award for Cory Stuart

Cory Stuart, WR in the Pioneer Football League, was named to the Second Team Academic All-PFL. Cory, a Sophomore, carries a 3.77 grade avg. in pre-physical science.

The University of Dayton had 5 members named to the first team and 5 to the second team. In both cases, it was tops in the league.

Congratulations to Cory and all ten Flyer players for their efforts to be student-athletes.

2014 Recruiting

This years recruiting class is about two-thirds completed & learning about the names is so different than in years past when we relied on newspaper stories or a sports website. Now the recruits come to us via twitter! Amazing change in our sports/social information sharing.

With 19 who say they are committed (there is no signing of a letter of intent & that's why the Dayton football program doesn't publicize things) - these guys can change schools at a drop.

Early commits were from Illinois; now 6 from that state. There are 7 commits from Ohio with more to come. Two are from east coast states. Two played together on same team, two played against each other, one is a younger brother of a Flyer and the father of another played at UD in 1983-85.

From NE Ohio there is Kevin Maloney, 6'2", 210#LB from Avon High & Joe Demuth, 6'2", 227# TE/DE from Chardon who played at NDCL.

Don't know if our two Solon Flyers are hosting campus visitors these days but I bet they are hard at work strengthening their bodies for the upcoming August camp. Next we want the schedule to be finalized.

Spring Game on horizon

Bet Ryan Schwenke & Cory Stuart are glad the winter workouts are ending. This week the tests in shuttle & 40 followed by the mile run on Friday. Next week spring practice starts with the Spring Game scheduled for Sunday, April 14th @ 1:00PM.

A coaching change occurred when QB coach & former QB star Kevin Hoying left for the OC position @ Wittenberg.

During the winter work, one video made YouTube and it's Matt Brown, 225# R-So from Galena, OH - Big Walnut High - doing the Deadlift 528# X6.

UD Teams are Really Student-Athletes...

INDIANAPOLIS Ė For the third straight year, nine University of Dayton athletics programs have received Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition awards, as the NCAA honored Division I sports teams ranked in the top 10 percent of the latest multi-year APR scores.

The Flyer teams honored were football, men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's rowing, women's tennis and women's volleyball.

The nine sport programs earning public recognition awards are the most for any Atlantic 10 institution, tying George Washington for the top slot.

UD also has the most teams honored of any school in Ohio.

Dayton football was one of two programs honored from the Pioneer Football League. UD football has been honored with an APR public recognition award for nine consecutive years Ė every time since the APR was instituted. They are in an elite group. Dayton is one of nine football teams to earn the honor all eight years. The others are: Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Duke, Princeton, Pennsylvania and Yale.

First Week of Camp

Two former Comets are part of the 110 players at Dayton Flyers football squads 1st week of camp. Junior LB/safety, #30. Ryan Schwenke,.and RS-Soph, #83, Cory Stuart will try to improve on the PFL Coaches Preseason Poll of a 2nd Place finish for the 2014 Flyers. Since 2000, Dayton has the 3rd best winning percentage in FCS football and the most academic all-americans (22) in any level of football during that time. There are 13 starters returning.

Camp always starts with 7 individual fitness tests.(bench press, Power Cleans (except freshman), verticle jump, broad jump, bag jumps, medicine ball throw, pro shuttle & the mile run. An evening meeting honored the best results and the Mr. Fitness Team Champion. Fathead action posters of the team captains were hung on the locker room wall.

Then two days with helmets only and the squad was split in half, each working either a morning or afternoon session - coaches work both sessions and more personal time is available, especially for freshmen. In one of Thursday's sessions, the Sports Center High-Lite of the day as the QB Coach wrote..." went to WR Cory Stuart as he dove and made the catch, completely out-stretched, on a 40-Yard Bomb from QB Blake Bir".

Tomorrow the boys get to wear shoulder pads with their helmets as this first week progresses according to league rules. All are on board in 2014 to...........: Make It Happen

UD at Duquesne after opening win

Tomorrow, Sept.13th, the Dayton Flyers will be in Pittsburgh to take on a tough Duquesne team that has many transfers & some size on their line.

It's good to see #30 Ryan Schwenke back in the starting lineup; he wasn't dressed last week at home.

Speaking of last week, UD had 23-14 win over Georgetown in the first meeting of those two schools.. Dayton's running back, Connor Kacsor set a single game rushing record with 301 yds. Cory Stuart played well, caught two passes & nifty blocking that the retired coach on the broadcast pointed out.

The Dukes hold a 6-5 edge in the series since year 2000 with all games within 10 point (usually 3 points).

Hurri-Comet is on a distinguished road
Dayton- Davidson, how many overtimes? I think I read 5? Ryan Schwenke starred again on defense? Is he playing any offense, or just safety? As that isn't enough.

Schwenke Stars in 5-OT Win

Yes Hurricomet, it was as you said, 5 Overtimes & much more. I was invited to tailgate with Flyer Fans for 2 hours. Met the parents of the Solon boys & Coach McCoy waved to me. The game took all of 4 hours & 11 minutes. Little did I know that I was watching the Pioneer Leagues Offensive & Defensive Players of the Week in the 54-48 victory.

Ryan Schwenke had 10 solo & 2 asst tackles, 1 sack & 2 tackles for loss, 1 fumble recovery & 2 pass breakups to earn Defensive POW. Ryan has grasped the opportunity that playing in the hybrid Flyer Position at Dayton provides an aggressive player able to play some LB & some DB depending on the situation. Running back Connor Kascor was Off.POW.

Cory Stuart had another good game with 3 receptions. When they pass it to him he catches it!

The team will play at noon at Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable in NY State & some Ohio cities on the TWC sports station.

Catching Up & Looking Ahead

Here's a link to the Marist game preview & interview with the League's Defensive player of last week, Ryan Schwenke & a few of his plays incl. a big tackle for loss.

The first handsome player is Connor Kacsor, the RB from Leo, IN who was All-State as a junior at Leo High then hurt his knee as a senior. Recruiters backed away but he came to Dayton, red-shirted a year and is an outstanding shifty runner with some power.

The coach mentions "TV cameras" which is refering to the upcoming Marist game at noon Saturday. TWC sports is carring the game in NY Satae & some Ohio packages.

The last play shown is the 5th Overtime intercept at Davidson which ended the 4+ hour game.

The Runnin Flyers run for 41

There were no Morehead Eagles flying around Dayton Saturday...too windy. So the Dayton Flyers took to the ground 46 times & gained 443 yds. Star RB Connor Kacsor carried 10 times & scored 4 TD's while gaining 232 yds. The winning Flyers had great blocking & forward push in this 41-7 win.

With only 7 completed passes by his team, Cory Stuart grabbed his usual 3 completions & added some good blocking. Ryan Schwenke had 6 solo tackles & 5 assists.

All the boys & plenty of parents will be packing for the long flight to San Diego next Saturday. Gametime in the east will be 9:00pm First place is no the line as usual with the Torero'.s.

Can't Hang Long Enough in San Diego

"Twas a lovely football evening at the University of San Diego with a clear sky, 70+ degree & only 5 MPH wind - a big change from Dayton, OH of late.

The Flyers all had their good plays & then some not so good with a big fall-off in 4th qtr. The score was tied 13-13 at halftime & 26-26 early 4th qtr but the Torreros hung a 40-29 final score on the Flyers.

Cory Stuart had 4 receptions & Ryan Schwenke his 6 solo tackles but the team suffered their first conference loss.

Saturday they are home against Valparaiso at 1:00pm. Without the all-day flights to the west, here's hoping they are up for a full game.

UD Pins a 42-19 Win to Resume

Neither the wind nor Valparaiso could stop the Dayton Flyers today as they now share a season of one conference loss with three other teams.

Former Comets had another good game. Cory Stuart made a nice TD catch and Ryan Schwenke made a nice interception in the end zone.

Next Saturday Drake comes in from Des Moines, IA to play the Flyers in a second home game in a row, the first this year. It never seems to get easy in the PFL.

No Hail Mary Against Drake this season

The Dayton Flyers tried the Hail Mary again with clock running out but it did not work like 2010's amazing comeback. Despite 400 yds of Offense, Dayton fell 34-30 to a tough Drake team who pushed and passed their way for 500 yds.

Ex-Comets Cory Stuart again had his 3 receptions for 31 yds & Ryan Schwenke led the defense with 4-solo & 7-ast tackles for Dayton.

Hopes of a title were dashed now with 2 PFL losses. Next week they travel to Indianapolis for a game in the Butler Bowl just outside the famous stadium where basketball will be played later in the day.In fact the football game starts at 11:00am to allow for a turnover in parking before the Nationally televised Bulldog basketball game.

Cory Stuart has break-out game

Ex-Comet Cory Stuart snagged a 27 yd 1st qtr pass & ran for the first TD of the game for the Dayton Flyers in their 21-14 win over nearby rival Butler in Indianapolis.

Stuart hauled in 7 passes during the game, catching everything he could reach. Monday evening Cory was a guest on the Coaches Radio Show from Millano's Restaurant.

The game was a low scoring affair with plenty of defense, especially the second half. It seemed that Ryan Schwenke made key plays out of his 5 solo, 1 ast. tackles.& 2 pass breakups.

Both players will end their Junior season 1:00pm next Saturday at home against Campbell University from NC.

Great Pride to See Former Comets Excell

All Comet fans should have pride showing after reading this weekly report on a University of Dayton football game. Just image, two of your former Comets end up Players of the Week after a great win against their longtime rival:::::

Dear Flyers,

Last weekend the Flyers pulled off a great win against Conference Rival Butler. It was an exciting 21-14 win that showcased all facets of Dayton Football. It was a total team win that moves Dayton into 2nd Place in the PFL with a 7-3 Record.

On Offense,.. WR's Ross Smith and Cory Stuart each had productive days... Stuart totaled 7 Catches for 91 Yards and a Touchdown, while also making a Sports-Center Highlight Catch on 3rd and 20 for a 25-Yard Conversion.

On Defense... allowed only 85 Yards in the second half. Their efforts were so outstanding that Butler only managed 5 First Downs in their final 11 series.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK;

Offense: WR Cory Stuart
Defense: OLB Ryan Schwenke
Special Teams: None

Scout Offense: OL Mitch Schleyer
Scout Defense: CB Josh Belt
Scout Special Teams: LB Shane Hannah
Hammer Hit: LB Mitch Sanders

This week the Flyers finish the season at home against Campbell.
It should be a great weekend for the Flyers as we not only honor our great senior class but go for win number 8 that will propel us into the off-season and set up a Championship Run in 2015.

GO FLYERS & MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
