Huber Heights Wayne does.... at one time it was one of the most expensive pay to play schools. The school board tried to take sports away but they came to an agreement if the athletic department could raise enough money to pay for all sports they could keep sports and that is the way it has been ever since.

What's wrong with having to pay one's way for extracurriculars?

at Wayne it was about $800 per student per sport. So, if you had 3 kids playing 3 sports each that was $7200.... this included junior high sports as well.....

now it is down to just over $400 with a family cap... not sure what that is.

I have coached in 4 different districts in my career in NE Ohio and only 1 of those did not have pay to play. Ironically, that one school had the lowest participation in sports and was larger than two of the other districts. There are many discounts and family caps and schools can help families that have difficulties paying so it is really not a big issue. The only problem I have with it as a coach is it makes it harder to throw a player off a team for disciplinary issues.

Not only discipline issues, playing time. A parent may not be willing to sign up a kid if they get no PT. .This is a problem with schools with relatively low numbers.

This is a reason that Wayne lacks depth and players transfer out to places where they would start than stay pay and sit the bench.

Three kids three sports? If you can't afford it, the word "no" comes to mind.

That works as well. What doesn't work is the implication that the OP seems to be making that others should pay the freight for your kids or mine.

The taxes that fund public schools have historically provided extra curricular activities as well at no extra charge. Any ideas as to why this is changing?

Yes. The state legislature has consistently cut down on the funding it has provided for education. So local districts have to find new and different revenue sources to replace that missing state money. This does not account for inflation either. By the way your cities and other local governments are in the same bind.

Statewide budget cuts and schools having difficulties passing levies.

Fremont Ross had it for a long time, until this year. Just a few weeks ago the Fremont City Schools announced that they were not charging pay to participate fees this year.

The taxpayers could fund sports with property or income tax if they wanted too. Since the state continues to screw with education funding and the cost of education is a mess, this problem appears to only get worse in the future. Taxpayers are already paying high taxes!

Pay to play??? Please. We're way past that. My kids just gave me a list as long as your arm. Student fee, math fee, science fee, computer lab fee, Art fee, various club fees etc. Not to mention the infamous "school supply list".

This. When I had a kid in High School she was in the marching band and also played sports. Throw in a band trip every other year on top of everything else and you are talking some serious coin. Felt sorry for the parents with multiple kids in high school at the same time.

So which option do you want?

Option A --- more taxes and everything paid for
Option B --- less taxes and required to pay for it yourself

there is no Option C --- less taxes AND everything paid for!!!!!

joe that usually goes like this:
Have kids --- option A
No kids --- option B

You and I might get it, but my experience is that people who don't have kids in school is a hard sell, not to mention poorer districts obviously.

School funding in Ohio was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court over 20 years ago. And has been a bad running joke ever since.

Option B works better in nearly every endeavor. Yet education is somehow "different". (hint: it's not)

Do not underestimate the value of a first grade teacher; especially, if he or she has a master's in child psychology. They can make or break a student. Plus, elementary teachers work circles around high school teachers.
