Canton emerges as favorite to host 2019 state football finals

Here's an article on the Canton Repository's web site -

By Joe Scalzo

The games were expected to return to Columbus in 2019
and 2020
CANTON Last month, it looked like Canton would need a Hail Mary to land the
2019 state football finals.
Now, the city could be in the red zone.
Following a strong performance as host of the 2018 finals, Canton has emerged
as the favorite to host the 2019 games, a surprising development considering the
championships were expected to return to Columbus in 2019 and 2020.
“We are quite hopeful they will be here,” Visit Canton president Allyson Bussey
said. “After this year’s games, we made it acutely aware that we’d love to keep the
games and that we were willing to offer the (Ohio High School Athletic
Association) the same parameters of the current contract to stay with us.
“We’re very hopeful that we’ve made a good impression.”
The OHSAA does not have a signed contract with either city for the 2019 finals,
but executive director Jerry Snodgrass has said he wants to finalize a deal by the
end of January. Columbus hosted the games from 2014-16 at Ohio Stadium,
while the 2017 and 2018 games were at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
The OHSAA will hold a board of directors meeting Jan. 17, when board
members could be presented with options for the football finals, OHSAA
spokesman Tim Stried said. If not, the decision could be pushed to the Feb. 14
board meeting.
“We know that we have a great site and all the things that go with it in Canton at
the Hall of Fame,” Stried said. “I do think the finals will be back in Canton, but
I’m not sure when. It could be this year, it could be down the road.
“The unknown in all of this is what kind of agreement we would have with Ohio
State and the Columbus Sports Commission. It really hinges on how soon that
agreement would come together. If we can’t pull together an agreement with
OSU, we already know we have a great site in Canton.”
While Columbus could still land the 2019 championships, a source familiar with
the situation said “it’s no secret that Ohio State has been really lukewarm” about
hosting the games. Former Buckeye coach Jim Tressel was a driving force for
bringing games back to Columbus — the decision to return to the state capital
was announced in July of 2010, when Tressel was still coaching OSU — but
Urban Meyer and Ryan Day have not shown the same interest, in part because
the Big Ten holds its championship game on the same weekend as the state
finals.
“Those games in 2014, 2015 and 2016, not only the contract but a lot of the
agreements that were in place were constructed with help from Tressel,” Stried
said. “He was gone by then (2014), but still he had kind of his stamp on a lot of
things that we did.”
The 2017 games at Benson earned mixed reviews, with Canton drawing the
fourth-largest crowd in finals history (61,312) but also garnering complaints
about parking (most fans were shuttled from the Stark County Fairgrounds) and
ticket delays. Parking and ticketing improved in 2018, but attendance dropped to
52,390 due to rainy weather on the Thursday night final between Massillon and
Hoban and much of Saturday.
“I think we learned a lot from 2017,” Bussey said. “We were in a new stadium
and a completely new setup and we thought this year was a huge improvement.
We addressed the parking challenges and opened the gates a little earlier so
people would have time to filter in and out of the stadium.”
What didn’t change was Canton’s hospitality, which has drawn high marks since
the games were held in Stark County from 1990-2013.

“When the state finals are here, they’re a really big client,” Bussey said. “We roll
out the red carpet. Because of the size of Columbus, it’s not that games aren’t
impactful, but they’re more important here because of the size of the community.
We’re really able to provide a level of hospitality and appreciation that no other
community can offer.”
In late November, Snodgrass told The Canton Repository Canton would
“absolutely” stay in the state finals discussion, but at the time, the OHSAA was
still under the assumption the games would be in Columbus in 2019 and 2020.
That changed in mid-December, Stried said.
“I don’t want it to come across that we misled anyone or that we’re pulling a fast
one on OSU and the Columbus Sports Commission understands that,” Stried
said. “Things could change, so we’ll have to see how it shakes out. The goal has
been to finalize everything by the end of January, so it depends on how much
Jerry (Snodgrass) wants to hold true to that.”

Stark County should always get it to host, just because.

They always seem to get awarded things based on votes

There it is............... they don't want it. So, unless some other facility or city puts in a bid, it's no contest. Games can't be played in cities that don't want them, no matter how many threads are on Yappi.

With the lack of fans at these games, at this point who cares where they are.?

Obviously, the games should be held at the heart of modern Ohio high school football, the MAC. Schools that have won the most state championships would get to host the larger divisions:

D1 @ Maria Stein - Those big school guys probably never get to play right next to grain silos.

D2 @ Versailles - Stark County thinks they have tradition? Try playing at Hole Field with the ghost of Al Hetrick hovering nearby (which is quite the trick since I think he is still alive).

D3 @ Coldwater - Might be field turf there soon. Plus great chicken wings in the press box.

D4 @ St. Henry - Bobby Hoying, Jim Lachey and Jeff Hartings host the festivities.

D5 @ Delphos - Though St. Johns and Jefferson might fight over who gets the concessions money.

D6 @ Minster - While Massillon displays all their poll championships, Minster will have girls track and cross country trophies being carried by current runners in training.

D7 @ Fort Recovery - Nothing like a little historical site for the fans to visit before or after the game.

Decision-makers seem to view Benson and HOF differently than many Yappsters. Wonder why that is?

Its always a good thing to host the games and I hope it happens again.

Good job Stark County.

I have no dog in the fight, but I can see the benefit both ways. If I was a HS kid, I might lean towards Ohio State, but Canton HOF is once in a lifetime experience too.

Ohio State - centrally located for entire state & every team. Most HS kids dream of playing in Ohio Stadium so would be very cool.

Canton - HOF museum & Stadium is one of the most unique environments in the US. Great location for Cleveland areas team, but stink for everyone else, especially Cincinnati teams.

OSU doesn't want the games. Unless another city puts in a bid, it goes to Canton. So, discussion here won't change anything.

Keep them up here in Canton. They do a terrific job. OSU is a top notch facility... for Power 5 college football games, not the OHSAA championships!

If you don't like Canton, get your coterie of supporters together and submit a bid.

It will never happen but Nippert would be a great venue.

With the games on TV I see no point as a fan to travel from Cincy to Canton. Once you get to Canton you just want to get out as fast as possible.

The good news is that no Cincinnati school has made the championship so many times that a trip to Canton becomes a burden.

You're kidding right?

Stark County teams sans McKinley in 1981, 1997 and 1998 haven't exactly set the world on fire, LOL

No decision at the OHSAA Board meeting today. In February, they are scheduled to review the financials from football and other fall tournaments. Expect a choice then.

We will never know.

Canton gets the bid, because they grease the palms of the head honchos of the OHSAA.
