Yes they were less costly in the evening hours.

Have an old church receipt book. It has ads in it and believe it or not some of the stores have 3 digit phone numbers. Most had 2 digit numbers.

Also, when was the last time you saw a slide rule cracker jacks, green stamps or running boards on a car?

How about calling past 9pm. I know growing up you would NEVER call someone after 9pm and even to this day I wont do so. When any of our phones do ring after nine I wonder what is wrong!
lol It was 10pm for us

Another thing that will be buried in the past is listening to the radio on a bad Winter night hoping they would announce your school was closed the next day.

We used to hang out at Salisbury and Portage Quarries in NWOhio (both closed to the public now). We'd challenge each other to see who could do the coolest flips off the cliffs. Here is a picture of the "bobber" which sits on an anchored large metal ball bouey. Once you'd get it rocking good, you'd stand on the handrail and when it would rock back the other way you'd do some sort of flip off of the thing. They also had a teeter-totter on the same type of ball with handrails at each end and you would rock up and down and side to side to try to knock your opponent off...In 20 ft. of water...with no lifejackets...lol.

They had submerged siloes and boats and even a plane. We would free dive down and through these death traps in 30-40-50 feet of water.
That bobber thing looks fun. There used to be a gravel pit on the Stow/Hudson border with a tree you could climb up about 20 feet and shake back and forth to try and catapult out. Maybe kind of like that thing. Cliffs and water were always fun, unless you f__ed up.

You can still cliff dive in one spot at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, across from the State Park (good hiking there), but only in one spot. It's private, and you can pay for a day's admission. If you've got a yearning, old man, you could give it a go. I haven't done a swan dive there for about 12 years, give or take. I have an ear and sinus problem that just kills if I get much deeper than 8 feet, but there are cars and an old crane carbody and tracks down there. Scuba schools teach there.

The beach and camping areas there are pretty good. When the Dead or Phish would play Cleveland/Blossom, the Deadheads would invade - especially after the Sagamore Hills cops pushed them out of Dover Lake Park (also closed). I'd usually try to pop in and wander about a bit. The Juggalos infested the place a few times, too.....vermin There were more recent concerts there with Wish You Were Here, Morrison Hotel, and Custard Pie, and the camp sites were full of old heads.

Motorcycle clubs will rent the Nelson Ledges race course in the summer, and it's pretty cool to be there when the crotch rocket guys are running wide open. I'd take my boys there if we'd hear the bikes screaming when we were hiking, and we'd stand on the walk bridge over the track to the infield area. You can feel the shockwave in the air and "hear" the bikes with your chest cavity. They'd all get half wigged out over it - the middle one would almost vibrate like a tuning fork. I don't ever want to see him with a sports car.....

There was only one telepnone company and you could never buy your phone, but only rent it, with the monthly rental charge included in your bill.

The phone number commercials were genius, since everyone remembers the number after many years. In Cincinnati:

Call Doc Rusk, 431-4040............. Night or Day.

I have a 'slippery stick' in my desk (in the den) also my H.S. T-Square, two
drafting triangles, French curve, both an Architects & an Engineering scale,
plus all the drawing instruments.

You can still buy Cracker Jacks in the box ~ but the prizes are now just little
paper things or water transfers (tats).

S&H (Green Stamps) is still in business but no stamps; they will redeem a book
if you have one.

Kroger and some filling stations gave TV (Top Value) stamps; A&P grocery
stores gave 'Plaid Stamps'. (A&P = short for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea
Company).

speaking of running boards... people buy running boards for trucks
sometimes referred to step-boards or Nerf boards (bars).

Pine Lake in Berne Indiana still has one of those bobbers, I believe. Was thinking a friend of mine broke his ribs on that once. They had the teeter totter thing too-but I think it is gone now. When I was much younger, they would allow you to go down the water slide (The big blue one used to be the only slide they had) head first. It is 2 lanes so you could race. Get a running start and dive head first-not really hitting the slide until it levels out. Good times.....many a girl lost their tops going down that slide.

My first thought was PIne Lake when I saw that. Been a few years, used to love to dive off that high platform!

used to be the only place to get those 'scooter crunches' to eat!

Loved those racing slides.

Truly amazing to think that she interviewed both Hitler and Mussolini in Europe prior to WWII. Pretty remarkable career. Even took a pie in the face.

Don't know how long they have been on the market (just caught a glimpse on the news a couple of days ago), but they're back. A quick google showed Polaroid and Fuji. Who'd have thunk?
