St. Bernadette spawned at least 11 Varsity Eagles this year including 6 or 7 starters...Burke, Mac's..Coury..etc.

St. Raphael cannot stop St. Bernadette (city champs past two years).

Tons of talent at St. B's and at least two of their best players this year are headed to the nest!

Almost makes me want to come out of coaching retirement to help the Raiders back to their former glory

[QUOTE=irisheagle;4384736]IMO I believe that Ryan Fallon will end up as the starting qb at St. Eds next year. I think that our offensive coordinator likes quarterbacks that can both run and pass.

If that is indeed the preference, freshman Jack Walz would get the nod in a competition.

I thought that Walz was playing defense most of the year.

I went to several frosh games and it seems that Walz started the season as the qb but ended up as a db. I hope he turns out to be a star at qb.

Remember the PD story about Fallon and the three other players regarding the high school selection process. Fallon was originally interested in Ignatius, but ultimately chose Ed's. One of the players transferred to Padua, the name escapes me.

If the PD was correct in the "Fab Four" of the eigth grade class, then the eagles should have three very talented juniors starting next year...

I thought this thread ought to be combined with the St Eds 2011 thread considering how the Eds OL came together like they did...

I for one am looking forward to seeing how the 2011 team performs on the heels of a championship year. There can be a significant "jump" in strength and athleticism from sophomore year to junior or senior year. If these young men remained focused in the off season and Finotti's staff tailor their 2011 game plan to suit their athletes on the field, it should be another solid year (hopefully a surprising year like 2010). I am most interested in these two elements...

1. Compiling a 10 game schedule for 2011 and 2012

2. Did the state championship in '10, in fact, impact incoming athletes that might have gone elsewhere?

Talented Freshmen

Quite a few Freshman may be able to impact the varsity in 2011. On defense they have a talented defensive end and inside linebacker that seemed to be all over the field this fall. On offense two receivers seemed to catch everything thrown their way and they have a good center and left tackle. With a strong off season they could be challenging for playing time at the varsity level

The offers keep piling up for last years guys

Bates picked up a Kent State offer as well as an offer from Notre Dame of Ohio.

Phil Smith-Verbal to Brown

Trent Rivera-Verbal to Penn

Kyle Kalis- Verbal to Ohio State

Geoff Mogus- Verbal to Northwestern

Avery Bailey- Verbal to Ball State

Robbie Coury- Offers from Air Force, Kent State and Yale

Deonte Gibson- Re-Opened his recruitment after Pitt fired Wanstedt, offers from Michigan State, Michigan, Stanford, Northwestern, among others.

Don Palov- Offer from Notre Dame of Ohio

Brandon Jackson- Verbal to West Virginia

Sam Grant- Offer from Toledo

Tyler Orlosky- Drawing High DI interest.

Greg Kuhar- High DI interest for wrestling.

I wouldn't be shocked to see either of the McManamon's pick up an offer. The PD article hinted that Shane was going to be headed to play at Cornell.

Then of course there is Burke, he doesn't have great measurables, but I would think someone would give that kid a shot somewhere. I don't know though.

Nice article in the Plain Dealer on Christmas about the Sikora family, who have sent many young men through St. Edward.

Deonte Gibson and Geoff Mogus have been invited to the Big 33 in June this year. I think Finotti may also be a coach for the Ohio Team.

I feel safe to say that the Holy War next year will be one of the most competitive in the last 5-6 years. The classes of 2012 and 2013 matched up pretty closely in Freshman and JV football. I'm glad it will be back to a great rivalry after a few blowouts were dished out for the last couple years by both sides.

Congrats to Senior OL Brandon Jackson who committed to Ohio University. The three OL seniors are going to Ohio U, Penn, and Northwestern, with Juniors, Kalis committed to OSU and Orlosky still undecided but going D-1 for sure. Best OL ever at Ed's?????

On a side note, St. Edward hired a vice president of institutional advancement.

Any news on our football schedule for next year?

How many games do we have scheduled next year? Are we still playing Columbus De Sales or did they drop us?

I think St. Ed's is off the DeSales schedule. Last years varsity was ugly, but the Frosh and JV was better. The freshmen game was an excellent battle that had a few very strong athletes from both teams on display.

Looks like DeSales is backing out. Here is their current 2011 schedule:

http://www.pouringpurple.com/Pouring_Purple/2011.html

I hope St. Eds can get 10 games. Losing Benedictine plus contracted games with Mooney (maybe) and DeSales does not help that goal.

Not familiar with the contracts, but I am assuing they wil have to pay some dollar amount to backout of the contract.

Seems like this happens all the time. Can't their be a stiffer penalty, or is St. Ed's in tough position due to the scheduling difficulties that already exist?

Perhaps someone can inform me, but are high school games typically scheduled according to legally binding contracts that are evidenced in some type of writing, or are we dealing with glorified gentleman's agreements?

http://www.ohsaa.org/general/forms/Games.PDF

As with any contract, one party could simply allow the other party to not perform to the terms of the contract, if they so desire. So, it may be a "glorified gentleman's agreement" in that sense.

Filing lawsuits to force a party to comply with a contract is relatively rare (called specific performance). In the alternative, people file lawsuits regarding the financial losses incurred (if any) as a result of a team's failure to perform. What are the financial losses to St. Ed's if DeSales cancels a binding contract? The game is almost certainly a financial loser (small crowd, transportation). Can St. Ed's claim that DeSales' refusal to play cost them a spot in the playoffs? Very speculative.

The other problem...sue someone, they'll never play you again.

i don't think anyone is even thinking about lawsuits. I just want 10 games against reasonable opponents. Most years, Mooney and DeSales fit that bill
