How do these "bosses" not get that ? Why can't that be communicated to advertisers ?

This is easily the biggest sports news of the day, better than the playoffs and draft talk.

Funny that Jamelle Hill seems to be the one person that everyone is shocked that is still at ESPN. It does appear that an awful lot of middle aged white guys got canned. The other thing you notice is that baseball and hockey is really struggling, and staff cuts make sense there. I've not watched a hockey game in years. Just no interest at all. You have to think that ESPN's ratings for hockey must really suck to pull the plug on their coverage. Now to get soccer the same way...

This can't be a shock to those in Bristol and other places. I mean, think about it, how may guys sit around and watch ESPN anymore? I've not found anyone who likes the new E6 show with Michael Smith and Jamelle Hill. I think it's an attempt for ESPN to cater to the millinial audience, and they simply don't watch TV. They watch programming on Hulu and Netflix. They follow sports on their phones and do not watch games.
Maybe ESPN can make take the full move and cancel the ESPY's, the biggest waste of time they have.
College football, NFL football and college basketball is ESPN's bread and butter. They need to stick with the basics.

No doubt, the sports leader, isn't there anymore. Fox Sports/ CBS sports are viable options and frankly don't push the liberal agenda.

Frankly, that's the way all cable news has gone. Legitimate journalism has gone the way of the IBM Selectric typewriter and has been sacrificed on the altar of bluster and fluff. 30 for 30 seems to be pretty much the only show worth watching, if you are interested in journalism.

[QUOTE=Sykotyk;6756376]ESPN has had a problem for years. And it is entirely self-inflicted. It was only a matter of when they'd have to do something about it.

This is a well thought out post. I would add that ESPN sold itself out to the NFL and NBA to the point that the only way it could justify the $$ it spent was to cover those sports 24/7/365. For the average fan it gets monotonous and repetitive.

There was no funding for some of the niche sports that ESPN cut its teeth on in the 80's and 90's.

To save $$ the Network put on endless shows of talking heads trying to find something, anything, interesting to talk about regarding those leagues.

NHL is a Niche Sport. The Fans are rabid but there is not a national following.

Baseball is a regional sport. I follow my team but don't have much interest in watching an entire Yankees/Red Sox Game.

For analysis and journalism I go to on line sites. ESPN needs an entire reboot.

1) Hill isn't "the one person." There's like 5. Hill is the least shocking, honestly, to anyone who pays attention. So naturally, you're shocked.

2) You know ESPN is going for a global reach, right?

Cowherd is probably right on the money in terms of why this happened: terrible contracts they signed with the NBA and NFL

http://nypost.com/2017/04/26/colin-c...ning-for-espn/

Here he has a pretty good interview on 92.3 in Cleveland and talks about it at the end...
http://www.sportingnews.com/other-sp...r17vuasn67wwl5

Quote:
Cowherd retroactively pointed to the nine-year, $24 billion contract ESPN inked with the NBA in 2014, when Cowherd still resided in Bristol, as an example of the financially alarming trend in his eyes.

“I told my producers, ‘Fellas, it’ll never be the same here,’” he said Wednesday on CBS’ “Bull & Fox” show. “You cannot pay four times for the house [more] than what you paid for the house last year. And I said this company will never be the same. It was at that point I started looking, and this is not going to end today. They have really cost-prohibitive contracts, combined with cord-cutting.”

The ESPN cuts were drastic, but were not unprecedented. In 2015, Bristol laid off about 350 employees, and Cowherd claimed he knew then — with the price ESPN had paid for sports TV contracts — that the cycle would continue.

“I said it the next day [in 2015], it’s awful, and it will happen annually for the next decade,” Cowherd said.

Molly Querim...I wonder what the percentage of female hires are at ESPN from 1990 through today. And they don't hire women who are hard to look at either!

Looking through the posts Taco, Hill's name comes up the most...not all, but most...

And yes, ESPN long forgot about what their roots were, they want the global effect, but it's odd that they push the NFL, which is mainly an American sport...but oh yes, it makes them the most money.
Americans don't like soccer, never have, never will. Good for kids to play as a starter sport, but horrible to watch.

Heard that travis guy ripping on ESPN this morning acting like they were so poor and lost their way..... Fox is doing the exact same thing. they are copying a failing model.

He also mentioned that ESPN had no viable original programming.... um... ESPN's 30 for 30 series and OJ Made in America are light years ahead of any original stuff FS1 has done or could even dream of doing.

Yup, of someone who's most disliked. Not shocked she's still there. Like I said, to anyone paying attention to what ESPN is doing, it's not surprising they kept Hill. Naturally, you're shocked because you have no clue what's going on ever.

Yeah, no sh*t they're gonna keep pushing their biggest money maker. However, because they aren't utter morons like you, they can also expand globally with increasing soccer coverage. You won't understand this of course but that's what ESPN is doing.

Then Cowherd should be worried about how much they shelled out for him, sharpe and that blowhard from texas. Also all the money that fox will now be ponying up to buy those same rights a couple years from now.

That last part kills me. He always takes credit for being the first to know without any proof.

If he's so smart, he'd leave Fox right now. Because, ya know, 3 years from now he'll say he knew before anyone else.

Yawn

Exactly. They're not going to give her and Smith the SC6 time slot and fire them a month later.

I'd contend that Travis is just as biased, if not more.

He's a Jim Rome wanna be with a dash of Colin "I told you so" Cowherd sprinkled on top.
