A big enough stipend that one could work from 18-26 while investing that stipend and truly retire at 50 ?

Interesting idea. Though would there be anything left of a person that spent from 18 - 26 partying on a stipend?

BTW, in Europe & Australia they have what's called a "gap year" where kids just out of high school put off going to college or getting a job for one year so they can travel and experience life. In practical terms it seems like one long party for the gap year but as I understand it the kids start saving for their gap year in their early teens and their high school graduation gifts are designed to help them fund their gap year.

Cabe, the 2 dummies are inferring that Miko Kaku, one of the, if not the, best and brightest string physicist in the world, doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. The man's devoted at least 3 chapters of 2 of his best selling books on the electromagnetic transport theory. But hey, some 26 year old professional student and the princess of yappi say it can't be so it must no be. Its always entertaining watching the rope a dope and moon walk as they try to deflect away from being mentally ignorant.

I assume you refer to a space-based maglev equivalent to Gerald Bull's "Big Babylon", as an acceleration device to fling what is essentially a capsule at distant destinations ? A pea-shooter ?

He's citing kaku, who has said Star Trek like transporting may be possible in decades. It won't be.

They've never transported a single molecule, much less living matter. Even Kaku admits it may not be possible. He's a futurist, his job is to facilitate discussion.

So you don't think it will be possible because they haven't done it yet? Interesting.

No, I don't think it's remotely possible within 100 years because they haven't teleported anything, much less a living organism. And they don't know if transporting a living organism is even possible.

What if the substance of an individual makes the trip, but the essence of a person and their experiences is lost ? Just a blank slate.

A terrible accident, but positives could come from it if we ended with the ability to "place an order" for a girlfriend. Wives might be easier to negotiate with if one could order one of these....

At face-value, that idea seems pretty unbelievable.

What I've come to realize the past couple years is just how quickly technology is advancing. If you look at human-technological achievements over the past 200-years, 100-years, 50-years, 20-years, 10-years, 5-years... Exponential growth.

I'm not ruling anything out. I cannot began to imagine what the world is going to look like in 2050.

Man had demonstrated the flight of many things by 1870.

Something like that would require several monumental breakthroughs. I'd bet we reach the singulariry before being able to teleport people millions of miles through outer space.

I tend to think it would be the other way around.

If we do find a way to transport at the speed of light, I'd think our human bodies as they exist today may not be able to sustain the trip. It may be our consciousness that is transferred over these distances and then uploaded into a robot or computer program at the destination

Cabe, refer you to a site that pretty much explains it, Douglas M Ferreira Palte, writes about phase displacement space drives and electrodynamic space thrusters. Harnessing the electromagnetic waves in a transportable system that can achieve almost the speed of light. Excellent explanations, excellent illustrations, excellent references.

There is also a cool site called Magnetic Transportation Systems, same theory but applied to a rail system on earth, harness the waves, manipulate the movement of a transport system bearing on top of the harnessed wave at almost the speed of light.

I'm curious why you would think our bodies would not make it? If you are moving at almost the speed of light, the amount of time to get to a distant place could be seconds, minutes. As long as you were in a safe containment area while traveling, why would our bodies be affected?

Eventually, I think we'll be able to figure out how to transport our bodies at light speed safely. However, before that happens, I think it will be easier to figure out how to transport a representation of our mind on a laser beam to a destination.

Ultimately, if we ever want to travel long distances through space, it will have to be our consciousness that is transferred and not our bodies, IMO
