Rush - Hemispheres (1978)

My Rating: 72.900
rank: 554 (out of 851)

Progressive Rock

Anything over a 70.000 means I like the album, anything over 80.000 means I think it is a great album, over 90.000 and it is elite, the best of the best...

Rush is one of those bands for me where their songs vary drastically on how I like them from one to another. I found this album pretty boring for the most part especially side 1 which is basically just one track broken up into different segments. What saved this album for me was the songs "Circumstances" and the last song which was a 9 minute instrumental. They were really jamming!!!!

2nd album, not as heavy as their first but once again a beautiful mix of acoustic and metal. "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" is the song I liked the best. Great album but in my opinion not as good as the first....
Have you listened to Ashes Against the Grain? Their best album IMO.

Great album, the deep cuts are what makes it for me. This song reminds me of Steely Dan>

I just realized that this is the only Billy Joel album that I have listened to all the way through. I will definitely have to go back and hear some others especially Piano Man.

You should go to The Stranger next, some solid pop tunes plus Joel's most popular multi movement tune.

My Rating: 76.234

I liked this album, this is the one with Werewolves of London on it. I did not know that Fleetwood and McVie played on that song as well as Jackson Browne doing backup vocals on the album.

One of my favorite song lines of all time: "Little old lady got mutilated late last night..."

Only liked 3 tracks on this album and some tracks I really did not like at all. Not sure how this album made it in the top 10 of 88... Talking Heads over-rated or just not for me... ?

The only Talking Heads album I've heard is Remain in Light, which I thought was pretty damn good. Don't know about their other stuff.

eastside_purple is infamous around these parts
Any Talking Head album after "Little Creatures" is very iffy. "More Songs about Buildings", "77", "Fear of Music", "Remain in Light" and "Speaking in Tongues" are all very good. And, of course, "Stop Making Sense" may be the best concert album/film of all time.

Huge Talking Heads fan here. Naked is arguably their weakest effort and signaled the end of the line for the band. David Byrne wanted to become Brian Wilson and thought the other Talking Heads were holding him back in the studio so he had all these studios musicians making this lush Bosa Nova sounding album, not really true to their punk roots. While it works on a couple tracks for the most part it was over indulgent and didn't work with his lyrical themes of bland suburban landscape and environmental awareness. He has continued this style since in his solo work and his career has been spotty at best.

Never listened to them in the day and I doubt that I would of liked them but since I have aged my tastes has expanded a bit... I did not think any of the songs were great but they were good.

Theatre of Tragedy - Aégis (1998)

My Ratings: 69.550
rank: 719 (out of 863)

Gothic Metal

Well, it didn't reach a 70 rating so I guess I did not like it. The music was fine but the lyrics were written in Early Modern English so I really have no idea what they are singing about. The male vocals needed to be more heavier, they almost got there toward the end of the Venus.

Well, that is it for the 8's for awhile... before I get to the 9's I will listen to some miscellaneous....

92

Suicidal Tendencies - Join the Army (1987)

My Ratings: 87.916
rank: 44 (out of 870)

Crossover Thrash

OK, Suicidal Tendencies used to be my favorite band for a short time during the mid to late 80's and what a year it was for Mike Muir in 87 with this album plus his side project No Mercy's Wide Spread Blood Shed... Both top 50 in my list!!!!! I used to go see these guys a lot and one time at the Newport Music hall I stumbled onto the stage and smashed right into the microphone during the Join the Army song and found my self right next to Rocky George, so why not, I sang the chorus with the guys before plunging back into the crowd... the good ole days before bouncers!!!!! Technically I used to own this so it is not a first time listen but you older guys know what happens to cassette tapes over the years. I swore I own this on CD but I guess not... I must pick it up as it still jams over the years. Too bad Suicidal Tendencies changed their style once again a couple albums later....
