As for sato, I only speculate but I've heard the same. He was a great player nonetheless. Kind of like Alex Carmona(aka alejandro sanchez)from Troy back in early 2000s. Was like 21 or 22 years old and dominated like someone should who is a grown man.

I agree that it does seem strange that Bobby Patton would leave Stanford and transfer to North Florida after 2 years because of the quality of education he would have received from Stanford vs North Florida and the value of a degree from Stanford would carry and this is where the story gets really confusing.
I did some research on Bobby Patton Jr and found where he did play basketball at Stanford for his first 2 years in college and then verified that he did, indeed transfer to North Florida and played there for the seasons of 1993 thru 1995. In the North Florida media guide I found where he was the team's leading scorer for the 94/95 season with 356 points and also led the team in assists with 129 that season. He also ranks 4th in career assists w/ 232, 4th in 3 pt fg percentage w/ 39% and 5th in career treys made w/124.
What is odd to me is the fact his coaching resume listed in a couple of newspaper articles shows him graduating from Stanford in 1995 with a degree in Political Science and later a masters from Kent State. I wonder how he played hoops at North Florida during the '95 season and then somehow still graduated from Stanford in '95 ?????? In the newspaper articles I looked at none have any mention of him ever playing basketball at North Florida ???? Yet he is listed in the North Florida media guide as having played there 2 years and also shows his HS as Youngstown Liberty so there is no question it's the same person. Maybe someone closer to NE Ohio hoops can shed some light on the
1995 confusion with graduating from Stanford while playing for North Florida.
Apparently he has coached hs basketball for several years in NE Ohio at Westlake, Kenston, and Solon and prior to that was an Ast coach at Dublin Coffman. Interesting, not to mention confusing.

Makes me wonder if his resume was falsified. I don't know, it just seems odd.

Technically, it wasn't aka Lorain Sr. as it wasn't called Lorain Senior until Admiral King was built in the early 60s. So, simply Lorain, like today, is/was the correct name.
As hinted, Lorain had a solid history until the other 2 schools, Admiral King and Southview, came along. Admiral King had outstanding teams for many years, and nearly took out powerhouse Hower in the early 80s.

Technically it's Ak.Central-Hower since the 2 schools; Ak.Central (a general
classification H.S.) and Ak.Hower (a vocational H.S.) merged in 1970.
Ak.Central had a couple of decent teams in the 50's-60's while Hower
was never a threat. Once the merger took place Ak.C-H was a beast
(see post #28).

Very good. Knowledge is power.
I failed to mention it was the same with Mansfield as well. It was simply Mansfield until Malabar was built, as the same time as Lorain's Admiral King. Coincidently, AK and Mansfield Senior joined the old Buckeye Conference for the 62-63 school year.

Are you crazy? He was the best player on that team, too. He averaged 18 I think and every time there was a play to be made he made it, period. That was the last time media types would deny big honors based on grade, giving many honors to teammate & LRMR business partner Maverick Carter, who was a great HS player in his own right but LeBron dazzled in 9th grade.

Ohio is a great basketball state. Lima has produced many dominant guards and each area has great players from past. In the big school division SW Ohio is the best. The cities of Dayton and Cincinnati have multiple tough leagues. No offense to Cleveland because they are also top notch with mix of public private schools that play great HS basketball. Columbus also is right there with many top teams.
|
I know Sato's birth certificate, or better said the lack of one, has been the subject of much controversy. I made a special trip one winter evening to Kettering Middle School to watch this Dayton Christian recruit from Africa (yes they scouted overseas in those days, though they eventually were sanctioned for it). I sat in the first row mid court and was astonished at Sato's physical strength relative to the other "boys". If I was forced to pick between 18 or 21 I would have picked 21. Now many years latter, I hope I was wrong and he was just a really developed man among boys. He was very fun to watch.

Looking at the updated lists of the OHSAA, Portsmouth is 2nd all-time in state appearances with 15, and 8th all-time in total wins with 1,381. The Trojans have also made the state tournament in 8 decades, topped only by Canton McKinley's 10 decades. Portsmouth has an overall record of 14-11 in the state tournament, 12-7 in Final 4 games. The Trojans have an 8-1 record in state semifinal games since 1931(state champions in Class AA), and are 7-1 in regional final games since 1961(state champions in Class AA). PHS has a 4-4 record in state championship games, and have won the state title in D2(1988--first year of D2), Class AA(1978--PHS's first year in AA), Class AA(big school--1931, 1961).
As of this post, Portsmouth has a record of 9-4(1,390 total), and needs 10 more wins this year to reach 1,400. It will be tough to do, but it could happen if they can make regionals.

Defending state champions the Reading Blue Devils did on Saturday, March 6, 2004 in Sectional final at Cintas. It was NCH only loss of the year. Final score was 58-47 The Blue Devils (17-6), unbeaten NCH (21-1)

1997 Clv.Heights (Regional Semi-final)
2004 Hamilton (State semi-final)
2012 Pickerington Central (Regional final)
Tidbits:
From 1954 thru 2000 McKinley had 47 consecutive winning seasons.
In 1937 McKinley and Massillon (Paul Brown as coach) played in the
state semi-finals (Massillon won; it's the Tigers only title game
appearance - they lost).
In 1940 McKinley and Massillon would meet in the State Semi-finals
(McKinley won) but play was stopped because of rough play and the
teams given warnings by the officials. Massillon would finish the
game with only on 4 players on the court.
P.S. All of this at/in the same class/division.

Waterloo Wonders
1934 and 1935 five kids from a very small school beat everybody, even the big boys. Someone should make a movie out of it, like Hoosiers.

Did anyone else notice that Kent State beat Oberlin 20-16 in 1927?
Was there a high school affiliated with the university at one time? Or did the university actually play in a high school tournament? I know back in the day it was not uncommon for colleges to play high schools, military schools, YMCA team etc. but I would think a state tournament would have been limited to the prep level.

That is the College's (Kent State) own H.S.
The State Universities had their own in-house high schools back then.
I am fairly certain the enrollment was pretty much limited to the
children of the employees, from Professors to Janitors.

Wikipedia has a nice entry on the school--it was still open in the early '70s and won a couple of state championships in track and cross country.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_St...versity_School
The idea, originally, was to have a school where the education students could do their training. Eventually it became a research site for the education faculty and their students.
Enrollment wasn't limited to children of University employees but there must have been quite a few or they wouldn't have bothered to have a rule restricting the number. Quoting the article: "The school had a policy that classes could not exceed 50% of children of KSU faculty, staff, or students unless there were no names on the waiting list."

If I remember they didn't play a league schedule the 2nd and 3rd year. Played D1 and out of state teams alot. I remember going up to Fairfield and watching them crush a St. Johns team with Raymond and Hilerland? I don't know if there has ever been a team in Ohio that would have run NCH out of the gym. Like I stated Mayo, Walker and Ellis never lost a game.

They played a partial league schedule: seven games, one against each school in their conference except New Miami (which seems wise) and maybe Clark but I'm not sure if Clark was in the conference then. A full schedule would have been home-and-away in the division and a single game outside.
They were still doing this in 2009, long after everyone was gone and they'd stopped being a dominant force in the league. Maybe somebody over on the MVC board would know the story.

You are aware there is a very well written book on this group called the Waterloo Wonders? They may have been one of the very original teams to travel and put on a show more so than merely play basketball. Pretty incredible dedication on the coaches part. He would load them into his own car and travel from school to school.
