Would you keep a package that you didn't order?

If the previous owner of your house kept sending their mail and Amazon orders to your house, even after they moved over a year ago, would you quit telling them about it and keep their stuff?

Previous owners of my place (absolute morons btw) have sent about 10 packages worth ~$600 here. I've been nice about it and have texted them each time to let them know. I'm getting pretty fed up. Today they sent a nice Bluetooth speaker, a shrinkable garden hose and a nozzle, worth $110. I'm going to keep the stuff. Would you?

I would never have put up with it for a year. After the first or second time, keep everything. If it's regular mail just throw it away.

Actually happened last week. But it was someone who lived in the building, just dropped it off at their mailbox.

This case is different. I've told them several times to file a change of address with the post office which they have neglected to do. They still send some of their medical and financial information here which I throw away. I never met the woman but I'm fairly certain she's rėtarded.

This is the correct answer. Congrats on the new bluetooth speaker, Sig.

I'm not sure keeping the stuff would be legal. I would call Fedex and UPS to put a RTS flag on any packages for the former tenet at your address.

Yeah it's definitely illegal. But if they don't ask I'm not going to tell them. This was just an ethical question about whether or not it's wrong to fool stupid/lazy people.

Don't forget 'reetarded'. Those are really the one that should have the screws put to them.

Sig asked if I'd keep the stuff. I wouldn't because it's likely illegal.

Not yet. The last time a package showed up at my door with someone else's name it was delivered by ICE and the DEA

Nice two pictures about 36 inches by 36 inches, framed, of someone named Evan Vice posing with Dave Matthews. The other is the same size but is of some dude with a red sweater vest. Pretty cool.

I dealt with this a time or two before I retired from the Postal Service.

If it's first-class mail or a package, and it's been more than a year, I'd cross out the mailing address, mark "Unknown - no such person", and stick it back in the mail box. The junk mail (Standard, Bulk Rate, etc) I'd throw away.

Yeah, definitely something wrong with the previous owner/tenant if they never filed a COA.

That's funny you brought this topic up because I just got an entire patio set sent to my house last month...table,chairs, umbrella sent to my house that was supposed to go to a few houses down. My street is confusing and this happens often. However I'm glad that I walked down and let them know it was delivered to the wrong address.
It was an elderly family who got it sent to them from their son for their anniversary. 50 year annniversary. But I can't say that I'm a saint.
I've kept things before and also have thrown away mail. I guess it's just a gut call.

It's a large package about 24x18" and would not fit in the mailbox, so I'm supposed to take it to the post office right? Because there's no way I'm doing that.

I don't recall saying you were supposed to that exact activity. I would probably take it to the post office, because I have a different perspective on the issue. Plus, I live pretty close to three different post offices, it wouldn't be any trouble at all to do so when I had another errand to take me by one of them.

Are you legally entitled to keep the mailed merchandise, despite the wayward former resident's incalcitrance? No.

Do YOU have to drive to the post office to return it? No.

Are you legally responsible for letting USPS know you are in possession of said misdelivered package? Yes.

Therefore, simply hanging on to it or throwing it away is not an option here. Couple of alternatives that shouldn't be as much of an inconvenience:

- Cross out the address and put NSP - RTS on there, as I mentioned earlier, and let your mailman/mail-lady know to take it back.

- Call the 1-800 USPS Hotline - you can find it online - and let them know. I don't like this option as much, because I've navigated that switchboard hell a few times myself. Just my preference.

"Once it is clear to the unintended recipient that the letter has been misdelivered or misaddressed, he knows that he has no business opening the mail and then possessing it (NOTE: which would include throwing away mail of value, including first-class mail and paid-for merchandise) The proper course of action in either event is to return the wayward mail to the Postal Service."

I would never keep anything that is not intended for me. It is stealing, plain and simple. I don't doubt that most people absolutely WOULD keep stuff and justify it by saying "well the people that paid for it are stupid". That is the world we live in today. Pretty sad in my opinion, but not surprising. At all.

What's your attitude if you ordered something and the PO/FEDX/UPS delivered it to the wrong address? Would you want the person to keep it or return it?
