NCAA Rumors

As Buckeye fans (like me) bemoan the disappointment of likely being only the 2nd best team in the NCAA next year, matching the dismal performance of this past season (sarcasm font), there are some interesting rumors circulating the wrestling web sites at this point in the summer. The following rumors range in credibility, but all have been kicked around on Flo, so it's not just off the wall crazy internet stuff. I'll rank them as 1 thru 3, 1 being about 50/50, 2 being somewhat likely and 3 being doubtful IMO but being talked about none the less. OK, here they are:

1. Nato will go 125.
Now we've discussed this in the past on Yappi, and I mistakenly wrote that the Olympic new weights were settled and Nate would be at 125 next year. This would obviously strengthen tOSU lineup filling a void at 125 and having Pletcher at 133 and Hayes at 141. I was unfortunately wrong. This decision won't be made until after the World Championships in late August. But, it's still a possibility.

2. AA Joey McKenna is transferring out of Stanford and tOSU is on his short list.
This is still in play, and if he does become a Buckeye he may go 149 and Micah bumps up to 157 (and getting away from Zain). McKenna placed 3rd at 141 as a freshman and got upset this year (as a 3 seed sophomore) and did not place. Obviously, this fills another void for tOSU at 157. I think the combination of Racer, Ryan and Burcher would be solid, but none would be considered a mid to high level AA like Micah.

3. Suriano is transferring out of PSU, or bumping to 133 if he stays.
This one I put in the "doubtful" category, but it is being talked about quite a bit on Flo. They had a 20 minute FRL (Flo Radio Live) segment on it recently and another shorter segment a week or so ago. They seem to obsess over the fact that no one like Cael or Suriano are saying anything to squash the transfer rumor. The 133 bump has been talked about less on Flo, but that would be an issue for PSU as well. They don't really have a backup plan for 125, like OSU without Nate or Jose.

Forgetting about #3, if #1 and #2 happen, tOSU lineup could look like this next year.

125 Nate
133 Luke
141 Ke-Shawn
149 McKenna
157 Micah
165 Campbell
174 BoJo
184 MyMar
197 Moore
285 Snyderman

That's a strong lineup.

Suriano has been working out this summer at Rutgers, not sure what this means but a lot of smoke.

My curiosity is between the Racer/Burcher/Ryan trio. Who wins this wrestleoff? That's the bird in the hand and very well could be the person to man the weight. And I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility for any of the three to be inside the R12 fellas. Low (7th/8th) AA may be a stretch. But not entirely over reaching to think it happens. Let's start there.

McKenna coming in, Micah bumping to 157 to make room and all of the rest of this is conjecture at this point. So, until proven otherwise, you dance with the girl you brought. And for the first time in years, OSU has depth guys. Real depth guys. Depth guys that would be top 20 performers if they get a crack at the lineup.

And that still leaves plenty in the tank for RS next season.

So assuming this isn't more "fake news" from bdhof (wait till Hunter comes back), if 1 & 2 actually come to fruition, does Osu have a shot in the NCAA tourney?

*if you're from Cleveland, "comes to fruition" means if it succeeds or happens as stated.

Without McKenna at 149 and Micah up to 157, the best of the 3 might be Ryan if he can return to his freshman form. Any one of them, though, could be a bubble AA (7-12) IMO. I really can't figure out what happened to Jake last year - weight, injuries or other.

Okay, so McKenna's top 3 are Ohio State, Lehigh, and Penn State. Lehigh's there because his HS coach, Jeff Buxton, now runs the RTC at Lehigh. If Suriano leaves, I think McKenna swings to Penn State (assuming he can and will make 141). If Suriano stays, I think it's Ohio State if the money is right, Lehigh if it isn't.

Suriano out of Penn State is a real thing and I think it might happen. I really have no idea why he would leave (weight that much of an issue? Anybody see him struggling last year to make 125?), but he's been at Rutgers like all summer from what rumors are saying. If he leaves, they have no 125 for the foreseeable future. Their whole recruiting plan was that Suriano had that spot for three more years and then someone like a Kurt McHenry slides in there after that.

If Suriano stays and bumps up, it's a loss, but Penn State would still be the favorite with no 125, Suriano at 133 and Cortez at 141 (Nick Lee redshirting). Ohio St with McKenna and Penn State w/o Suriano is a CLOSE team race

I thought Jake Ryan was done. I swear I saw a post from him or coach Ryan saying so. But I could be wrong. It happened once

They do but will need some help from the wrestling gods. TOSU will need to steamroll in the finals, like PSU did last year.

Haven't crunched #s but 1 of 3 we're still chasing, 2 of 3 is close to a tossup, all 3 and we're probably a favorite
I'll crunch #s later

Here's the moment you've all been waiting for...the number crunching

Here's the point system:
1st 20
2nd 16
3rd 13.5
4th 12.5
5th 10
6th 9
7th 6.5
8th 5.5
R12 2
R16 1.5
R20 0.5
You can substitute your guesses with mine and make changes accordingly.

PSU's lineup, other than Suriano, is set so I'll start with them.

125 2nd (if there)
133 R12
141 8th
149 1st
157 1st
165 1st
174 1st
184 1st
197 5th
285 5th

Total points 143.5 (127.5 w/o Suriano)

OSU best case scenario (w/ McKenna and Nate at 125)

125 1st
133 5th
141 5th
149 4th
157 3rd
165 7th
174 2nd
184 2nd
197 1st
285 1st

Total points 144.5

Bonus point advantage for PSU ~11.5

So w/o Suraino in the PSU lineup, and w/ McKenna @ OSU and Nate at 125, OSU has a slight edge (+5.5).

W/ Suraino @ PSU add 16 and OSU is -10.5

W/ Suraino @ PSU and McKenna elsewhere OSU is -23

W/ Suraino @ PSU and Nate @ 133 OSU is -33

NCAA Rumors

Obviously, it's really early to be doing forecasts. But here's a few things to think about.

1. What if BoJo is finally healthy and wins a title?
2. What if Joseph doesn't beat IMar (or Massa) and falls to 3rd?
3. What if Campbell, Pletcher or Hayes has a breakout year?
4. What if MyMar beats Bo again?
And last but not least...
5. Wait till Hunter comes back.

Don't see Joseph winning again. Frankly imo both Imar and Massa are the better wrestlers. Tip of the cap to Vincenzo for getting it done when it mattered, but imo he has no better than a 1/3 shot at repeating. Mark Hall could easily not repeat too, especially if Zahid is back at 174.

FRL (Flo Radio Live) has officially changed their name to FSTU (Flo Suriano Transfer Update). They have had four straight sessions on this topic (among other topics), the latest one where they said "unnamed sources" leaked that Suriano wants a release and Cael is saying, "Pound salt." So, if he goes, he'll lose a year. There's still no word on whether he transfers anyway or returns to PSU.

The other rumors, Nate at 125 and McKenna at OSU, are still just floating out there. Nate's decision should come in late August after the powers that be set the weights for future Olympic / World Championship competition. And McKenna's new school is still unannounced.

Time to ramp up the rumor mill again. Nick Suraino's name had been removed from the PSU roster today...

...then it magically reappeared.

Other recent rumors on this issue have PSU agreeing to release Suriano, but not to a B10 school. Suraino, a NJ resident, reportedly wants to wrestle for Rutgers (located in NJ) next year. There's several articles online about this, two (at least) saying that Suraino will file a waiver with the B10 which will likely be rejected. Then he would have to A) return to PSU, B) lose a year at Rutgers, or C) wrestle at a non-B10 school (for at least a year).

From Flo

**FINAL UPDATE WE THINK**
The 2017-2018 Penn State roster has been posted, and Nick Suriano is not listed. FloWrestling has confirmed that this roster is updated and accurate and that Suriano not being listed is not a mistake.

Penn State gave a release, it's up to the Big 10 to grant Suriano eligibility next year. If he gets it, it's a huge boost to the Rutgers program.

To update my points since one of my three rumors has apparently played out, things look like this:

PSU 127.5 + bonus advantage 11.5 = 139 points

A) OSU with Nate at 125, McKenna at 149 and Micah at 157
144.5 points
B) OSU with Nate at 133, McKenna at 149 and Micah at 157
134.5 points
C) OSU with Nate at 125, McKenna not at OSU (Ryan, Racer or Burcher R12)
134 points
D) OSU with Nate at 133, McKenna not at OSU (Ryan, Racer or Burcher R12)
124 points

So, depending on how rumors 1 (Nate) and 2 (McKenna) play out, OSU has a slight advantage (5.5), a slight deficit (4.5 or 5), or a more considerable deficit (15.5).

Wow that is interesting. I had just assumed no one would be close to PSU with 5 champs returning and the bonus points those guys rack up.

Some would argue that I was generous to Pletcher (5th) and Hayes (5th) but I think both are mid level AA type guys at 133 for Pletcher and 141 for Hayes. And these are the bdhof preseason rankings, but I think they'll be pretty close when the rankings come out. Pletcher and Hayes may need to prove themselves and likely won't start as high as I project them. And we all know that it's a long season and rankings will change. And then the rankings are always off compared to final results.

Penn St would have recruited Specer Lee much harder if they knew Suriano was going to flake. This puts them in a huge hole at 125, but they are still the heavy favorites come march. I wonder if any 125ers outside of the Big Ten will make a last minute transfer to start for PSU this year.
