Luke Kennard--NBA Draft 2017

Former Franklin Wildcat great Luke Kennard is projected to be drafted anywhere from 8-15 in tonights NBA draft. He is the best southwest Ohio basketball player since Norris Cole and Daquean Cook in the last 10-20 years. He is the best pure shooter in the draft imo. The knock on him is defense and some say he is just a spot shooter. I disagree, I think he has a great basketball IQ and passes it just as well as he can shoot it. His defense will need some work but I see him sticking in the NBA for a long time.

Best case scenario, JJ Redick? Not a bad career.

I mean, OJ Mayo transferred for his senior year, but he was a SW OH guy for a couple years.

He is going to Detroit which is not far from home. Hope he makes SW Ohio proud.

Mayo is definitely up there. Maybe because he transferred in from West Virginia 9th or 10th grade and then transferred out for his senior year I forgot about him. Would have loved to have saw Mayo/Walker/Beasley in a UC jersey but the president screwed that whole scenario up.

Congrats to Luke, he has worked his tail off to reach his dreams tonight Best of luck young man.

OJ Mayo only played in Ohio because he had used up all of his eligibility in Kentucky because he started playing varsity in the 7th grade. He moved in with his AAU coach in Ohio so he could keep playing. Then he left Ohio because he wasn't allowed to play here any longer and finished up his career in West Virginia. Mayo doesn't count in my opinion. He isn't from Ohio and broke rules to play here.

I think he has a chance to be better than Redick. He is bigger, more athletic, a better defender (although not a great one) and he has a better one and two dribble game coming out of Duke than Redick did. If he ends up having a career similar to Redick's though that will be a solid career.

Man, I remember all the "experts" on Yappi who bashed that teenager for being overrated, playing a weak schedule, unable to get far in the postseason, etc when he was in high school.

Congrats, Luke, though your tax liability is now going to be greater than those geniuses'.

There are 15 players better at Ponitz and Dunbar right now.

15 at each school, right? Luke would be lucky to make the JV at those schools, even as a 21 year old.

I have no doubt that he will. What I like most is that with all that talent, Luke chose to remain at Franklin HS to play with the guys he grew up with and QB for awhile.

Redick has really improved on the defensive end. Now, he is getting the top 2 or 3 the clippers play. Honestly, no one is guarding a lot of those types.

Its pretty clear that Kennard and Payne are the top 2 dayton metro players recent history

Ok name all 30, so we can see which Power Basketball School each of them go to and see if even one of those make it to the NBA.

Considering Reddick signed for 23 million for one year I'd say that would be awesome. He will have to work on his body as well.

Also he's got a nice looking chick

Hoping for a very long and successful NBA career for him. In today's NBA a spot shooter is not a bad thing if you have slashers who can drive and kick out.

Article in Cincy Enquirer from 10/20/17;

Luke is in rare company with these #1 NBA draft picks who spent four years at local Cincy High schools. During high school I always compared Luke to Kevin Grevey from Hamilton Taft, UK Wildcats, and Washington Bullets (NBA champs in '78):

Former Franklin High School standout Luke Kennard of Duke University became the first player to have played four years at a local high school to go in the draft's first round since Brian Grant of Georgetown in 1994.

Here's the list of NBA Draft first-rounders from area high schools:

Brian Grant - Georgetown High School (Xavier University) 1994 NBA Draft Round 1 (8th overall)

Tyrone Hill - Withrow High School (Xavier University) 1990 NBA Draft Round 1 (11th overall)

LaSalle Thompson - Withrow High School (University of Texas) 1982 NBA Draft Round 1 (5th overall)

Kevin Grevey - Hamilton Taft High School (University of Kentucky) 1975 NBA Draft Round 1 (18th overall)

Dave Cowens - Newport Catholic High School (Florida State University) 1970 NBA Draft Round 1 (4th overall)

Tom Thacker - Covington William Grant HS (University of Cincinnati) 1963 NBA Draft Round 1 - territorial

Jerry Lucas - Middletown High School (Ohio State University) 1962 NBA Draft Round 1 - territorial

Not being from Ohio, I have never been able to figure out how Middletown and now Franklin are considered part of Cincinnati by sports fans. Franklin and Middletown are 40 miles from Cincinnati. They are both only about 20 miles from Dayton so wouldn't it make more sense to include them in Dayton's history?

Yeah I understand--both are kind of in the crossover area between Cincy and Dayton--Middletown has been in the GMC since 1966-67 which now comprimises all schools that compete in Cincy area sectional tournament play--Franklin at one time was in the MML which also had teams that competed in Cincy and Oxford sectional tournaments, but now is primarily associated with Dayton.

The Cincinnati Enquirer has a broad reach of coverage in Southwest Ohio!

Thanks that actually makes sense. I never understood why before.
