VASJ Vikings 2017-2018
Congratulations to VASJ Sr point guard Gene Higgins who just earned an offer to attend the US Military Academy at West Point, play DI basketball there, and serve his country. Gene is an incredible young man, both on and off the basketball court and football field. If Gene accepts the appointment, he will be the the 3rd VASJ Viking in the last 6 years (2012, 2016, and possibly 2018) to attend this prestigious institution. All Hail the Red, White, and Blue!

A little early, but what will VASJ look like next year. Who do they return?

Obviously the loss of Gaffney is huge but Sr point guard Gene Higgins (West Point recruit) is the straw that stirs the drink. The rest of the guys on varsity were reserve players and JV. Calhoun is a talented junior guard. Kopplemen will be tough as a 6'3" junior forward. The Priah boys will provide muscle down low. DiNunzio steps up as a 3pt guy. The height will come from a 6'7 and 6'6" soph and junior. Vikings should be competitive but not sure yet if they have enough to get past an always deep SVSM team. The freshman class should be very talented with a couple of guys getting varsity minutes later in the year.

I see them making it all the way to Canton however I don't think they'll have enough to get past an always tough St.V squad. I honestly hope they return to Columbus this year but the loss of Gaffney hurts big time.

They will tough again. Gaffney is a loss and his production will be replaced by a combination of players. The two tall player from the JV squad got taller and both will be over 6'6. Koppelman will replace Newlon as the 3 point shooter. The Vikings will be talented once again - but who other than Higgins will lead. Losing McGarry and Butler is HUGE. That leadership and grit in tough games will be missed. SVSM has some very good young talent if any of you Viking fans remember from the JV game. They will be a tough out. I like always expect Joe's to be Joe's.

VASJ will once again be a formidable opponent and moving to D2 presents one Big Hurdle-STVM. The young talent (2019 & 2020) at STVM is legit with more on the way in 2021 and 2022. Always a great matchup winner goes to Columbus.

Do you think LeBron is staying in cleveland after this next season? I know, off topic, but Lebron taking his family to LA will have its ramifications in the ohio high school basketball world.

There is some talent on that youth team Lebrons son plays on. You would think his kid would attend SVSM.

VASJ Vikings 2017-2018
For many regular attendees at VASJ basketball games over the years and many know her as the “VASJ Grandma” who’s been a fixture at the Village sitting front row at mid court at most if not all home games and running the bookstore at one point has just passed away. I extend my condolences to her family in their time of grievance. She will be missed

If he leaves, its for Houston.....but didn't his wife and kids have a home in Akron while he played in Miami for school purposes?

She was a great and caring lady. She always sat two row ahead of our Family. We were always amazed at how many current and former player, cheerleaders and students would stop to give her a hug and kiss. She loved her Vikings ad they loved her. She was very small in stature, but big in her presence. We first met her at St. Felicitas Parish and she was one of the first to welcome us to Viking Village. She now joins her husband who passed a few months ago in heaven where they will continue to look over their Vikings. RIP Grandma

Vikings coast to a 104 to 68 win over North Coast League rival Warren JFK. Tomorrow night, Saturday 12/23, Vikings take on New Day Academy. Viking All Ohio pt guard Gene Higgins needs 13 points to pass the 1000 point mark, which he should get tomorrow. A well deserved milestone for this young man's career.

Supposedly many former teammates will be on hand to present Gene his 1000 pt ball. Well deserved for the floor general and leader of the team. I'm a huge Higgins fan as a player and a person. He is the poster child for giving EVERYTHING you have all the time. He plays one speed and that is alll out. He leads by example. He shows how much hustle and hard work pays off. His motor, will to win and relentless manner is unmatched in NE Ohio IMO. Off the court he is the opposite. You will be hard pressed to find a better young man and example of what it is to be a Viking than Gene.

Such a shame to have that game cancelled. Would've been a nice opportunity to take some pictures and promote the program in a historic place. Well, since the game is cancelled will the new VASJ AD go out and try to find a new opponent to take the place of this game? I saw where Beachwood is open for a game this year so maybe that would be a fit? Wouldn't it be great to see a rematch of the game last year versus a quality opponent? Hopefully the AD can make this happen.
