GAME REPORT: Columbus West 36 Columbus South 6

Columbus West 36 Columbus South 6

Last night I made my first trip to Columbus West high school to take in the homecoming game between,West high school and South high school. South entered 3-4, while West came in with a 2-5 record.
I want to say I really enjoy the five dollar ticket, the free parking and the free copy of each teams roster. The only down fall was the lighting was as bad as I have seen this season and maybe ever and the scoreboard not working 100% All in all it did not seem to affect the game or the players.
With 8:29 left in the opening quarter Cowboys would get on the scoreboard, when Mike White scooped up a South fumbled and took it 20-yards for the score. Jacob Adams was able to convert the two point conversion run to make this a 8-0 game.
The West defensive line would would have a field day in this one and this would show very early on. With 7:29 left Phillip Thompson would sack Martin Malachi for a nine-yard-loss. The quarterback never had a chance on this play as his offensive line was beaten badly. The drive ended a short time later, as the Cowboys defense stayed stout.
Mike White would pick up 12-yards for the Cowboys, with 6:38 left in the quarter. White can electrify a crowd, with his speed, his Jim Kick like power and his Emmitt Smith like field vision. The 6-2-205 pound senior would have his number called a lot during this one and he would not disappoint his teammates, coached or the hometown fans.
White would pick up another 12-yards, with 3:53 left in the quarter as he used all of his skills and some fine downfield blocking. The 12-play,97-yard drive came to a close when Christian White connected with Mike White for a 13-yard score. A two point conversion failed and the score remained 14-0 West.
West would get two runs by Mike White that total 23 yards as his offensive line dominated on both runs. The White would follow Matthew Shaw into the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown, with 8:37 left in the half. The White to White combo struck again to complete another two point conversion pass play, to make the score 22-0, with 7:51 left in the half.
The West defense got another sack, when Mike White threw the South quarterback down for a 6-yard loss. Then, with 2:44 left Christian White and Chris Barnes combined to take down Trevell Adams for a 9-yard loss. The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard when, DeShawn Cunningham out ran the entire Cowboys defense for a 67-yard score.Martin Malachi missed the point after kick and this remained a 22=6 game, with 2:09 left in the half.
West would get a 46-yard run from Jacob Adams, with 1:55 left. Adams would close out the 4-play,58-yard drive, with a 7-yard run. A two point conversion try failed and this remained a 28-6 game, with 59.9 seconds left in the half.
Just :53 seconds into the third quarter Cunningham picked up a South first down with a nice run, where he again displayed a lot of speed. The Bulldogs got a 20-yard reception by Jermiah Tucker on a pass thrown by Malachi at the 10:33 mark of the quarter. Cunningham had his number called again at the 9:37 mark of the quarter, but this time Mike White and Dawson Shaw met him for a 4-yard-loss.
Mike White sacked Malachi with 9:05 left in the quarter on a fourth and goal from the nine.
Mike White would gain 15-yards with 6:47 left in the quarter, when he broke to his left and sprinted away from the defense.
Adams would pick up 28-yards with a run to his right, with 5:57 left.Mike White would pick up 10-yards and then cap off the drive with a short touchdown run. Christian White made this a 36-6 score, when he converted the two point conversion.
The final 3:43 of this one would see the West defense come up big three times.
First it was Christian White and Mitchell McGrath stopping Cunningham for a 6-yard loss.
2nd was David Strong and Barnes sacking Malachi for a 7-yard loss.
3rd was a sack by Thompson on Malachi for a 6-yard loss.
