It's absolutely the site administrators job to keep unruly fans in check. The problem is they don't want to pizz anyone off so they don't do it unless requested to by the officials.

It’s such a coarse society any more, thanks to anonymous message boards and social media, the continued devolving of our sociopolitical environment, et al, so this type of reprehensible behavior is just going to increase.

Some years back the wife and I were in an El Torito in Monterey. The 49ers were playing the Giants and this one lady was getting out of hand with her language directed at Phil Simms. I finally said, "I bet you eat with that same mouth." Silence the rest of the game.

Define unruly. Screaming at a ref? Profanity? Antagonizing high schoolers? If you are going to wait for school administrators or security on site (usually off duty cops) to discipline crowds then I think you will be disappointed. They pretty much have to be flat out ready to run on the court or doing something obscene to get thrown out. I remember a Cleveland Heights fan who seemed to be known for doing things to get himself kicked out of games, dropping his pants and mooning the St. Ed's crowd at a game I think in '03 or '04. Lakewood police escorted him out and I think that's the only time I ever saw someone kicked out of a hs basketball game.

I'm loud at the Portsmouth games, but loud in a positive way. I've been going to Trojan games for 46 years, and I see so many people just sit there and never even clap their hands, let alone say something with volume. Kids want to hear vocal support, and for the fans who support the team with silence, you're not at the opera. Too many are worried about what people might think of them if they say something out loud. I'm not one of those people.

Supporting a team is supporting a team in a vocal way, not just being there spending at least half your time looking at your smartphone.

There are several economic, labor-related and lifestyle trends that are at play here:

1) The 9am-5pm and 8am-4pm work schedule has become less and less popular. Often times it is the case that people aren't getting off work until 6 or 7pm, especially in rural areas. It's also the case that workers are working harder than ever before, with less disposable income (taking into account inflation) than before. Go to four high school basketball games during the regular season and that already kills off $28-$32 of the money in your rainy day/set aside fund.

2) If you bring a family of four, as in two adults and two children, your admission cost is going to be about $26 or so (assuming adults cost $8/head; children cost $5/head.) Whether or not those are exact ticket prices or universal ones is beside the fact that you're often times than not parting ways with Andrew Jackson for a basketball game. Factor in concessions, or a meal to and from the game, and that's another $10 easily burned.

3) Anyone interested in watching basketball can do so on their television, for free*. What's the point of going to a high school basketball game if you have no family playing or if its not your alma mater?

Not great, but we won 15 games last year. Nearly the whole team back. Place is like a dungeon. Not even the students show up. A huge downturn from years past. Looking for a pretty nice year from the Tigers, but they are not too good. Cannot figure it. Plenty of talent, just not a very good team. Coach said in the paper that he is getting little or no effort from the kids. Don't seem like they have a lot of pride.

Well in Columbus, and around its suburbs, I think the lack of attendance comes from you can choose up too 3 high school in your 8th grade yr. You have the option not to go to your neighborhood school and now there is not any school spirit because you live in the city and go to a suburb school. The top notch games do however sell out!
