So Berlin Hiland is a smaller school and if I’m not mistaken, won back to back state championships not too long ago. Definitely going to make the long road trip for that game the weekend before Christmas. The North Allegheny Tournament I believe is a tournament in western PA. Not sure what teams will be there, if any, from Ohio. Kiski Prep is a boarding school somewhere in PA. Not familiar with their program.

Lakeside District should be interesting, see they have it posted now on OHSAA. VASJ, Lake Catholic, and Edgewood will be tough this year. Jefferson had a nice run the last few years but will be down a little this year.

Glad we’ve VASJ during the regular season. Rest assured the Vikings will be on the LC regular season schedule moving forward.

How did Lake not get competitive balanced up to Div I? Did they have a group of kids from one CYO team end up playing hoops? I mean much smaller CCC is playing in Div I this year.
Also, a little surprised they didn't beef up the schedule this year in anticipation of solid squad. Would have been cool to see an Iggy or Ed's this year.

Very surprised Lake and VASJ are playing in the regular season since they are both in the same district. Also surprised that Joe's is playing SVSM since they could potentially meet in the regional.

I'm more surprised that the NCL hasn't adjusted divisions for basketball to put VASJ (and CCC) into the top division.

They are in the top division - in basketball. VASJ, CCC, STA and JFK have all won or were runner in the state tournament the last several years. Now you add Gilmore to that mix. That side of the NCL is better in hoops. Has anybody in the other side of the NCL even sniffed Columbus ? These are much smaller schools than the powerhouses on the other side of the NCL. If you had a basketball tournament the last 6 years with all the NCL teams in it a team from the small school division would have won it every year.

I watched all 3 of Lake Catholic’s quarters (20 min game vs each team). They went 2-1. Beat Ignatius and Euclid but lost to Beachwood.

Benny has won state titles in hoops and was in the final four in I believe 2010. The rest of NCL Blue though...

Lake Catholic was in the final four in 2012. Lost to eventual champion Dayton Dunbar.

Coached against Luke Frazier in middle school. He was quite a player and has exceeded the expectations that I had for him this early in his varsity career. Between him and the other sophomore, Lake will be very solid for the next few years. Because of those two (not to mention his uncle being the coach), I fully expected Luke Chicone to choose Lake Catholic over Mentor. I hope Lake Catholic will find themselves back on Mentor's schedule. Since we can't get a football game between the two, the basketball is as good as it gets.

I have always wondered why the two don't play in hoops.

What a ride that was. That Regional Final game against SVSM was fantastic. I will never forget it was St. Patrick’s day and it was like 75 degrees. I’ve never seen so much green in my life. I wasn’t sure if people were LC or Irish fans.
That Dayton Dunbar team was unbelievable. It was unfortunate we had to play them in the semifinal.

Was hoping Chicone would go to Lake. I’m sure it has more to do with Krizancic than anything else. You’ve a kid with that much talent, I would want him being coached by the best.
But yes, LC should have some very good teams the next couple years. I can’t believe how much Frazier has grown from last season. There is a ton of talent on the 8th grade CYO teams this year as well which bodes well for the future.

They’ve played in the past. Mentor hosted a holiday tournament in years past that LC was normally in. I don’t believe Mentor has done that tournament in a couple years now. There was also some regular season games in the 2000’s. I don’t believe LC has ever beat Mentor in hoops.

I feel like coaching couldn't have been the primary reason. One reason is that his uncle is the coach at Lake. Unless of course the family feels like he could get further being away from family coaching him in varsity. Second, who knows how long Krizancic will be there. Considering he was thinking about stepping down in 2013 or 2014, I would be pleasantly surprised if Krizancic is there for all four years of Chicone. Maybe Krizancic told the Chicone family he will be there for four more years?
Luke has played with the Mentor boys for all of these years. My hunch is that the comradery and talent among his peers is a big part of the reason for staying in Mentor. The sophomore class at Lake is probably more talented than Mentor, which is why I thought it might be a temptation to go to Lake. Frazier, Eller, and Chicone in a couple years would be a formative trio. Maybe the Frazier kid playing PG (Chicone's position I'm guessing) was a factor too?

The last five or six years I would take Joe's , CCC and STA over the rest of the teams in both sides of the NCL.

And good luck to Brush. Looks like the Arcs were impressive in their first game this past Friday.
Finally, for LC, the season begins tomorrow night.

Heard yesterday Luke had a great first game in a tournament the Cards were in over the weekend down in Columbus. Did he start do you know? And if so, I’m assuming it’s because your missing players from football? Still, great to hear he’s already making an impact.

It was one game at a showcase event near Columbus. I don't know if he started. My guess would be no, but I would bet he was one of the first guys off the bench. Mentor was without one projected starter and two rotation players from the football team. One of those plays the same position (backup PG) as Chicone. With three men down, he got some bonus playing time. Looks like he made the most of it.
