Perfect example of hiring a young coach with no head coaching experience and letting him gut the program and run amok. This will set the program back for years. They might win 1 game (Ravenna) but I doubt it. Coach also has made it plain that he wants players to focus only on basketball.
Is Kent good at anything anymore? Seems like a similar tone throughout the district. Not the same power they were 25 years ago.

Many factors have led to the decline. School administration and AD making poor decisions have forced alot of parents and talent to either leave the district or simply not play.

Why did Kent leave the PTC? Obviously the Suburban is just too hard for them.

Kent left because the PTC did not offer all of the sports programs that they had and also the suburban league is made up of similar size schools. Kent was by far the largest school in the PTC and dominated most venues. The suburban league better matches itís size and talents. However, the timing proved to be bad as the 2 major sports, football and basketball, had coaching changes that were not successful. Lost many athletes to transfers both public and private. Also school cut the bridges program which kept many high risk student athletes who typically excelled in these 2 major sports. Once the hemorrhaging started it couldnít be stopped. Kent can compete but changes need to be made starting at the top.

Tonight should be an interesting night in the SLA:

2017-12-15 Barberton -at- Copley
2017-12-15 Highland -at- Revere
2017-12-15 Kent Roosevelt -at- Aurora

We should find out a little more about Copley and Barberton tonight. I suspect that Copley will get the win but haven't seen enough from either of these teams to really know yet.

Highland at Revere is another interesting game. Both teams have been early season disappointments but the season is still very early for both.

Kent at Aurora could be an easy win for Aurora. Kent hasn't shown much at all this season with blowout losses to everyone so far. Aurora has been the best surprise of the season.

Going with:

Copley by 10+. Too much team speed and athletic ability for Barberton to keep up with the pace, especially with football players working back into basketball shape)

Highland/Revere should be interesting. I would expect a close game but expect Highland to pull this one out by 4 with a better balanced team than what Revere has.

Aurora by 10. Kent Roosevelt has yet to really show they can compete in any game. Aurora has a few nice players and expect Kent having a hard time containing Huffman.

I wouldn't necessarily say revere has been a disappointment. They played solid teams both of their games and lost both close. Revere looked like the better team in both games but just went cold for a few minutes in each and it cost them.

Barberton has a good team, and they have a number of really good players who are clearly comfortable playing with pace. Problem is when you play at pace v a team like Copley that does this every day in practice, it's just really hard to sustain it for 32 minutes, without eventually hitting the wall. Pretty much what happened late 3rd/early 4th qtr tonight. A 4-8 point game became a 12-16 point game in about 2 minutes of actual playing time. Neither team played great, both sloppy at times, but the Indians do have pretty good scoring balance with their 1st 7-8 guys, and kind of wear you down. Good win for the Indians, and the Magics are going to win a lot of games this year, good luck to them.

Not sure I totally agree with this Bri, as the last 2 seasons Copley's pretty much had everyone's number, whereas this year looks to be a bit more competitive in the middle to upper part of the league, plus Aurora has clearly improved as well.

Have to agree with Brian here. Copley, Barberton, Highland, and Revere look to be down. Kent looks to be WAAAAY down. Tallmadge and Aurora looked to have gotten marginally better. Overall the league is down. Tallmadge and Copley for the title. Scrum for 3rd-6th. Last place way down in the cellar is Kent who might be looking to get back to the PTC so the can at least compete. They won't play a league game within 15 the rest of the year. Probably get beat by 40 by Tallmadge tomorrow.

I was basing my view on the fact that the league being somewhat more competitive somehow made it better, but I guess that isn't necessarily the case. In all fairness I haven't seen Highland or Revere play yet, so I'll have to take you guys' word for it. I will say that I do think that Copley, Barberton & Tallmadge are going to win a lot of games this year, and not just in the SLA.

That probably depends on how Walsh ends up, no? If they go 16-6 or 15-7 then it doesn't reflect much of anything. If they go 10-12 then I would agree with you.

Copley is not down by much, of course an undefeated season followed up by a one loss season they are probably going to be down. With the transfers they really just reloaded a bit. Funny that Dente got these two on the boys side and also got a move in from his AAU team on the girls side. I guess if you can't beat em join em.

Revere looked pretty solid against Copley. Neither team shot the ball well. First and third quarters were very fast paced but Revere slowed Copley down in the fourth quarter. Nance had 17 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 blocks. He is a very skilled player who could probably be more aggressive on offense. Although, it's difficult when you're constantly being double teamed.

Very impressive box score for the young man. I really enjoy watching him play. Very good win for the Minutemen.

Indeed, Walsh was pretty bad last year after having lost so many seniors in the prior year.

Hopefully, Walsh is back this year to their usual above-average level. The win over Copley may indicate they are. Hoban-Walsh basketball games are much more fun to attend when the games are close and the kids get into it.
