Wanted a day to just chill and watch some basketball, and had to make the journey across town to Falls and Stow, so I went to watch Stow take on Kent Roosevelt.

Stow is good, but it is really sad how far the Kent basketball program (and football for that matter) has fallen over the years. Kent's 3 teams were all in disarray, and it was painful to watch, and it was hard not to feel bad for the kids. They were throwing passes into the stands!

The varsity game was 70-31
The JV score was 61-18 (if I recall)
The 9th grade score was 70-21

Looks like the second year Kent coach's plan to build the program in his image from the bottom up has bottomed out. When your freshman team is getting blitzed like your jv and varsity programs, time for school administration to cut bait with the guy, and hope to just salvage what's left of the program. Obviously his methods and style of coaching hasn't caught on program wide, with no signs of improvement in sight. Time for coach to go, and quickly.

What is up with Barberton and Highland. I believe both teams
returned at least 4 starters and both teams look lethargic.
Players just going through the motions..............

Not being inside the program, it would be interesting to find out how the people still playing for Kent feel things are going. Are they getting better individually? As a team? While things don't look great, this is only his second year. Kent hasn't been very competitive in the SLA in most sports. Maybe it's a foundational issue in all sports more so than one coach in one sport.

Copley at Aurora is apparently cancelled:

Quote:
Copley:
ALL after school activities and evening events for Fri Jan12 & all events for Sat Jan13 have been canceled.

A decision regarding school closure will not be made until Fri morning, closer to a more accurate forecast of the coming storm and it’s severity.

Kent basketball coach's methods have been pretty well documented here since last season. Guy just doesn't seem to have much tolerance for any kids who aren't dedicated to his coaching style 24/7. High school kids have a variety of interests, and looks the the majority of those hoopers at Kent have got the message re coach's style. The lack of talent and overall interest in Kent basketball is reflected in his varsity, jv, and freshman teams's records. Maybe a new coach will have an initial down season, but when kids thru their freshman year aren't buying in, you have a school wide program. Sure record isn't everything, but when teams are getting beat badly and regularly thru the coach's first two years, it's pretty obvious many talented kids who might otherwise think about playing basketball, have apparently seen the writing on the wall, and said no thank you,

Kent coach cut 5 returning seniors last year to start over. Also lost 2 more senior’s after season started who were his best offensive and best defensive players. These players left because coach was running excessively long practice sessions and requested more time for studies and were denied. Both were national honor society students. By doing this he eliminated over 7 seniors and elected to play underclassman who should have been a playing freshman and JV ball to develope. He also ran off any other upper classmen with similar off season antics. Basically commit to basketball or nothing. AD and admin are backing him so this is what they get. 2 seniors, 1 playing his first year, a couple of Jr’s And the rest freshman and sophomores. You reap what you sow and as I said in the beginning of the season they would be lucky to win 2 games. And there isn’t much in the future by the look of it. Coach should have been reprimanded or terminated for what he did to those 2 seniors last year. You cannot treat student athletes like this and be successful

Hoping some games can be played this week. Too much downtime for most teams.

Not a pretty game at Highland tonight. Neither team played very well and Rittmans last shot was moderne lucky than good. Highland and Barberton play Friday as well as Revere and Tallmadge. Tonight's game solidified for me that Copley is still the favorite.

I would agree neither team played well. Donít really see why a wide open long three is lucky? Lucky is a half court shot or clanking off the backboard. Tallmadge blew a sure win. Highland is coached poorly with a dribble drive offense, no pressure D... donít practice a zone defense and donít have a zone offense... press break plan is non existent. Feel bad for players as they could be good with a coach using their talents properly. Not a playoff run talent, but certainly good enough to win the SLA easily this year.

Tallmadge has nobody to blame but themselves.
Typical of todays players, up by 10 with 2 1/2 minutes to play and boys
still taking contested shots. They are more worried about their personal stats
than winning the game. How about moving the ball, burning some clock, and
make your free throws. Highland did not win the game, Tallmadge lost the game.

Agree 100%. Too many kids (and parents) more concerned with personal stats than winning. Low basketball IQ and/or selfishness. Biggest challenge for high school coaches but critical for team success. Coach has to make players learn from this experience or suffer the same fate down the road when it might really count.

I agree with all of this except for the wide open shot comment. That shot was heavily contested and Rittman was spinning and fading and hit a great shot. But it was not wide open. That being said, it never should have come down to that anyway.
This Tallmadge team does not have a killer instinct. To do what it takes during the week to bury teams when you have them down. This game was a horrible blow to Tallmadge winning the SLA. No room for error from here on out. Hopefully we donít take a dump against Cuy Falls like we did last year.

Rogue.......seriously. Cestaro gets a lot out of his kids and they are well organized. Have been competitive since he has been there. Probably the best boys coach they have had in the last 12 or more years. As for the Rittman shot... wide open ?!! Seriously?? He was anything but open and basically double clutched it to get it off. Your feelings toward coach are clearly very personal and entirely inaccurate.

I definitely don't think that was an easy shot either. It looks like he was a good 4 or 5 feet behind the 3 point line. Can someone who was there verify?

How do you suggest the Devils learn/gain that killer instinct? Are you calling for a coaching change?

Sounds like he has an axe to grind. Maybe Highlands coach used to beat his freshmen teams back in the day and now Rogue is extra jelly

I can verify that he was 4-5 feet behind the 3 pt. line and the shot was contested. The game was a snooze fest until about 3 min. left in the 4th, then it got exciting. From my viewpoint Highland did just enough to win at the end and Tallmadge did just enough to lose. It seemed like it was Tallmadge's game to win or lose all along. Turnovers really cost them late in the game.

How does Kent lose to 0-9 Springfield the PTC cellar dweller at home? Proves my point about this coach. 1-23. JV and Freshman teams about the same. Time to go.
