Some more info on the men's freestyle team:

FloWrestling Big Board rankings
Fix- #1 in Class of 2017
Saunders- #1 in Class of 2020
Demas- #43 Class of 2017
Berge- #6 Class of 2017
Lewis- #17 Class of 2017
Brooks- #2 Class of 2018
DePrez- #8 Class of 2017
Warner- #7 Class of 2017
Elam- #54 Class of 2018
Steveson- #1 Class of 2018

Topics:

Inexperience- Only two guys (Fix and Steveson) have wrestled at Juniors before, however both won world championships last year. Nobody on the team has wrestled an affiliated college match either- last year Hall, Valencia, and Moore had all placed at NCAAs and McKee had wrestled there.

Replacements- Saunders replaces Austin Gomez, who looked to me like a threat to medal and had looked great at the Trials. Elam replaced Kerkvliet, who just took silver at Cadets and was another guy I thought had a shot at a medal.

Projections- Juniors is always much harder than seniors to project, because I simply don’t know the rest of the world as well. The two guys I’m (obviously) most confident in are Fix and Steveson, and think it would be a disappointment to them if they don’t wrestle in the finals. The USA always does better in upper weights than lower weights, so I think Brooks and Warner can both wrestle for medals. I honestly don’t know about the rest of this team. Saunders didn’t place at Cadets but has a history of good freestyle results. Berge has wrestled at Cadets before but went 0-1. Demas ran through a tough US Open bracket and looked great, but has no previous freestyle success internationally. Lewis beat Marinelli, but I think Marinelli is better in folkstyle than freestyle. DePrez has looked good, but 84/86kg is gonna be a tough weight. And I don’t expect much out of Elam.

Day 1 is done. The US had five Greco competitors, two of which will be wrestling for a bronze medal tomorrow. Kamal Bey and Cohlton Schultz both lost in the semis; Bey lost 7-1 to a Russian with excellent defense, and Schultz lost 2-1 to an Armenian who caused problems with his size. Both guys will wrestle tomorrow for bronze medals.

Three other competitors lost their first match today: Brady Koontz, Alston Nutter, and Barret Hughes. Nutter will have a chance tomorrow morning in repechage, since his opponent from Kyrgyzstan advanced to the finals. Koontz (Ohio State) actually looked okay, and had a nice gut wrench the one time he got on top, but in the end lost 7-6.

The US picked up two medals today, as Cohlton Schultz won his bronze medal match and Cornell's Andrew Berreyesa made his way into the finals and will wrestle for gold tomorrow. Kamal Bey lost the bronze match in a 2017 finals rematch; Bey struggled in both his losses against guys who were defense first against him.

Nutter lost in the wrestlebacks, and LaMont, Omania, Dow, and Porter all lost early and didn't advance to tomorrow. Berreyesa wrestles three time age level world champ Komarov of Russia tomorrow.

Women's wrestle starts early in the morning. Two Cadet world champs in Macey Kilty and Ronna Heaton are competing, along with Alleida Martinez, Brenda Reyna, and Dymond Guilford.
