2019 NCAAs

I'm gonna do a preview of what to expect for the 2019 NCAAs, weight by weight. I'll do a weight or two each day. This isn't a ranking, but more of a "who's coming back to the party" type of thing, and who are the new guys that could have an impact. Part of my research will be returning placers from IM (Intermat) and then I'll steal a lot of material from RoarLions1, a PSU poster on another forum who did the same type of preview recently.

Before the preview, I think we need to do a recap of one of the most entertaining seasons in recent memory (only outdone by the Buckeyes 2015 NCAA championship season).

2018 Recap
tOSU had just come off of a strange ending to the 2017 season. Being heavy underdogs entering the 2017 B10s, they shocked the wrestling world by winning the 2017 B10s. That raised hope that they could duplicate this feat two weeks later at the 2017 NCAAs. That didn't happen as PSU crowned 5 champs, after crowning only two in the B10s, and outpaced the competition. tOSU would finish a distant 2nd, 36.5 points behind. And PSU did so with NCAA title threat, Suriano, on the bench. Maybe that 36.5 spread goes to 55 points with Suraino back in the lineup. Only the purest of optimists gave tOSU a chance to win a title in 2018, bdhof being one of those. If only tOSU could wrestle like they did in the B10s, where they out performed their seeds, and not like the NCAAs, where they under performed their seeds. Contrarily, PSU under performed at the B10s and over performed at the NCAAs. It was a stretch to imagine a 2018 NCAA title, but there was a chance. And it would be on our home court in Cleveland.

Then this happened to make things more interesting. Te'Shan Campbell transferred to tOSU, giving the team an upgrade and perhaps an AA competitor at 165. And there was grumbling in Happy Valley, as Suriano was rumored to be on the move for greener pastures. And then NaTo started the rumor that he might drop back to 125, making room for Pletcher at 133. By filling a hole at 125 and plugging in Pletcher, a solid AA threat, tOSU was further upgraded and getting a little closer to PSU. Then AA Joey McKenna, transferring out of Stanford, put tOSU on his list of potential destinations. Wow. Could this this all pan out?

Well, it all did. NaTo dropped, Pletcher filled in, McKenna arrived, Micah and Hayes bumped up (filling another hole at 157) and Suriano landed at Rutgers. OK, we still lost in Cleveland, but it was a blast to follow this team this past year. And there were too many "what ifs" to list that might have brought an NCAA championship to tOSU. Suffice it to say that the better team won, but we took it down to the wire.

125

Edited on 9/4

Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 125
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Spencer Lee - Iowa - Freshman
2 - Nick Suriano - Rutgers - Sophomore
3 - Nathan Tomasello - Ohio State - Senior
4 - Ethan Lizak - Minnesota - Junior
5 - Darian Cruz - Lehigh - Senior
6 - Sebastian Rivera - Northwestern - Freshman
7 - Ronnie Bresser - Oregon State - Senior
8 - Zeke Moisey - Nebraska (from West Virginia via transfer) - Junior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Spencer Lee - Iowa - Freshman
2 - Nick Suriano - Rutgers - Sophomore
4 - Ethan Lizak - Minnesota - Junior
6 - Sebastian Rivera - Northwestern - Freshman
7 - Ronnie Bresser - Oregon State - Senior (still eligible)
8 - Zeke Moisey - Nebraska - Junior

And rumor has it that Lizak will move up making 125 look like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Spencer Lee - Iowa - Freshman
2 - Nick Suriano - Rutgers - Sophomore
6 - Sebastian Rivera - Northwestern - Freshman
7 - Ronnie Bresser - Oregon State - Senior (still eligible)
8 - Zeke Moisey - Nebraska - Junior

Previous AAs
Nick Piccinnini, OKST, 4th 2017, Sean Russell (Minnesota via transfer from Edinboro) 7th 2017, Ryan Millhof (Arizona St) 7th 2016, and Connor Schram (Lehigh via transfer from Stanford) 8th 2016

RSFR Fix, OKST, could challenge Lee at 125 but the smart money has him going 133. You can add to the mix R12 guys like Hayes, VT, Lamont, UVU, and Piccinnini, OKST. There's a lot of room on the podium for newcomers like tOSU's Malik Heinselman. Coach Ryan indicated that he'll compete if he can do so at an elite level. If not, he'll RS. My guess is that he'll take a year to grow into 125, unless Ryan thinks tOSU can close the gap on PSU.

Don't know if you're gonna expand on 125 at all, but a couple things I wanted to add-

1. Ronnie Bresser still has another year of eligibility, so he should be in contention for that second tier behind Spencer
2. Sean Russell (Minnesota), Ryan Millhof (Arizona St), and Connor Schram (Lehigh) are all previous AA's and will be in the mix.

I added Bresser to the list above. Good points on #2 about previous AAs. Piccinnini is also a previous AA. I'll likely exclude other previous AAs in future weights (due to low energy) but if you or others want to mention others I miss, that would be great.

2019 NCAAs

Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 133
RANK-WRESTLER-SCHOOL-CLASS
1-Seth Gross-South Dakota State-Junior
2-Stevan Micic-Michigan-Sophomore
3-Tariq Wilson-North Carolina State-Freshman
4-Luke Pletcher-Ohio State-Sophomore
5-Kaid Brock-Oklahoma State-Sophomore
6-Scott Delvecchio-Rutgers-Senior
7-Scott Parker-Lehigh-Junior
8-Montorie Bridges-Wyoming-Freshman

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK-WRESTLER-SCHOOL-CLASS
1-Seth Gross-South Dakota State-Junior
2-Stevan Micic-Michigan-Sophomore
3-Tariq Wilson-North Carolina State-Freshman
4-Luke Pletcher-Ohio State-Sophomore
5-Kaid Brock-Oklahoma State-Sophomore
7-Scott Parker-Lehigh-Junior
8-Montorie Bridges-Wyoming-Freshman

If you add in 125s Suriano and Lizak, and move Brock up to 141 to make room for Fix it looks like this.
RANK-WRESTLER-SCHOOL-CLASS
1-Seth Gross-South Dakota State-Junior
2-Stevan Micic-Michigan-Sophomore
2(125) -Nick Suriano-Rutgers-Sophomore
3-Tariq Wilson-North Carolina State-Freshman
4-Luke Pletcher-Ohio State-Sophomore
4 (125)-Ethan Lizak-Minnesota-Junior
7-Scott Parker-Lehigh-Junior
8-Montorie Bridges-Wyoming-Freshman

And then you have 3 R12s in Jack Mueller* (UVA), John Erneste (MIZZ), and Austin DeSanto (Iowa, by way of DREX). And perhaps the best wrestler in the weight is RSFR Fix, OKST. This weight is loaded.

*Jack Mueller UVA is reportedly RSing this year. He was a R12 last year and an AA 6th in 2017.

Jumping right to 141...
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 141
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Yianni Diakomihalis - Cornell - Freshman
2 - Bryce Meredith - Wyoming - Senior
3 - Joey McKenna - Ohio State - Junior
4 - Jaydin Eierman - Missouri - Sophomore
5 - Nick Lee - Penn State - Freshman
6 - Kevin Jack - North Carolina State - Senior
7 - Chad Red - Nebraska - Freshman
8 - Sa'Derian Perry - Old Dominion (via transfer from Eastern Michigan) - Sophomore

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Yianni Diakomihalis - Cornell - Freshman
3 - Joey McKenna - Ohio State - Junior
4 - Jaydin Eierman - Missouri - Sophomore
5 - Nick Lee - Penn State - Freshman
7 - Chad Red - Nebraska - Freshman
8 - Sa'Derian Perry - Old Dominion (via transfer from Eastern Michigan) - Sophomore

Brock moves up from 133, and now it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Yianni Diakomihalis - Cornell - Freshman
3 - Joey McKenna - Ohio State - Junior
4 - Jaydin Eierman - Missouri - Sophomore
5 - Nick Lee - Penn State - Freshman
5 (133) - Kaid Brock - Oklahoma State - Sophomore
7 - Chad Red - Nebraska - Freshman
8 - Sa'Derian Perry - Old Dominion (via transfer from Eastern Michigan) - Sophomore

You can add in R12s Mitch McKee (MINN at 133) and Mike Carr (ILL). Another R12, Brock Zachrl (CLAR) is rumored to be going to 149. Some rumors have Yianni going up as well, but I have him staying put. This is another very solid weight, but IMO the top two are better than the rest.

On Yianni/Cornell- if Yianni doesn't go up to 149, Vito Arujau (Cadet World silver/U23 World team member this year) will probably be at 133, and he will be in that mess.

Now on to 149...
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 149
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Zain Retherford - Penn State - Senior
2 - Ronnie Perry - Lock Haven - Senior
3 - Matthew Kolodzik - Princeton - Sophomore
4 - Troy Heilmann - North Carolina - Senior
5 - Brandon Sorensen - Iowa - Senior
6 - Grant Leeth - Missouri - Junior
7 - Jason Tsirtsis - Arizona State - Senior
8 - Boo Lewallen - Oklahoma State - Sophomore

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
3 - Matthew Kolodzik - Princeton - Sophomore
6 - Grant Leeth - Missouri - Junior
8 - Boo Lewallen - Oklahoma State - Sophomore

Plug in Micah Jordan (see below) and it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
3 - Matthew Kolodzik - Princeton - Sophomore
6 - Grant Leeth - Missouri - Junior
6 (157) - Micah Jordan - Ohio State - Junior
8 - Boo Lewallen - Oklahoma State - Sophomore

Previous AAs
Justin Oliver 7th 2016 (NCST, by way of CMU), and Max Thomsen 5th 2017 (UNI), Anthony Ashnault 8th, 4th, 6th 2015-2017 (Rutgers) and Thorn 8th 2017 (MINN)

Four R12s come back in Ke-Shawn Hayes (tOSU), Justin Oliver (NCST, by way of CMU), Jarrett Degen (IAST), and Max Thomsen (UNI), as well as 3x AA Anthony Ashnault, Rutgers (injury last year). A tOSU rumor has Micah Jordan dropping to 149 and competing for a NCAA title. He has taken one for the team in the past, bouncing from 141 to 149 to 157, fitting in the slot that helps the team the most. He could be the man to beat at this weight. The other competitors are somewhat interchangeable IMO without a lot of star power now that Zain has left. I'd expect a lot of movement in the polls and the #1 slot throughout the year. Micah could be the one to hold down the #1 slot if he drops. This move weakens the team, but I think tOSU is battling for 2nd this year like everyone else not named PSU. I didn't really think Hayes looked small at 149 last year and perhaps he can bulk up a little and make some noise at 157. And as mentioned in the 141 post, Yianni may bump up, but I think he stays down. He's the favorite wherever he goes.

And we're heading to 157 without taking a breath.
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 157:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Jason Nolf - Penn State - Junior
2 - Hayden Hidlay - North Carolina State - Freshman
3 - Tyler Berger - Nebraska - Junior
4 - Michael Kemerer - Iowa - Sophomore
5 - Alec Pantaleo - Michigan - Junior
6 - Micah Jordan - Ohio State - Junior
7 - Josh Shields - Arizona State - Sophomore
8 - Luke Zilverberg - South Dakota State - Senior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Jason Nolf - Penn State - Junior
2 - Hayden Hidlay - North Carolina State - Freshman
3 - Tyler Berger - Nebraska - Junior
4 - Michael Kemerer - Iowa - Sophomore
5 - Alec Pantaleo - Michigan - Junior
6 - Micah Jordan - Ohio State - Junior
7 - Josh Shields - Arizona State - Sophomore

And drop Jordan to 149 and bump Kemmerer to 174 (see below) and we have this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Jason Nolf - Penn State - Junior
2 - Hayden Hidlay - North Carolina State - Freshman
3 - Tyler Berger - Nebraska - Junior
5 - Alec Pantaleo - Michigan - Junior
7 - Josh Shields - Arizona State - Sophomore

Previous AAs
Paul Fox 7th 2017 (STAN) and Geo Martinez 8th 2016 (OKST)

Three R12s come back in Kennedy Monday (UNC), Paul Fox (STAN), and John Van Brill (RUT), and add Hayes as a R12 if Jordan goes 149. But the big news is that Kemmerer appears to be bumping two weights to 174. This weight belongs to Nolf.

Last year tickets were gone in about a week or so after they went on sale in March (other than $1,500 NCAA experience tickets). They're in Pittsburgh this year so they probably went just as quickly. Just checked the NCAA site and you can get the "experience for $1,500 or get them on the secondary market (exchange).

Time for 165...
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 165
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Vincenzo Joseph - Penn State - Sophomore
2 - Isaiah Martinez - Illinois - Senior
3 - Evan Wick - Wisconsin - Freshman
4 - Chance Marsteller - Lock Haven - Junior
5 - David McFadden - Virginia Tech - Sophomore
6 - Alex Marinelli - Iowa - Freshman
7 - Jon Jay Chavez - Cornell - Junior
8 - Chandler Rogers - Oklahoma State - Junior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Vincenzo Joseph - Penn State - Sophomore
3 - Evan Wick - Wisconsin - Freshman
4 - Chance Marsteller - Lock Haven - Junior
5 - David McFadden - Virginia Tech - Sophomore
6 - Alex Marinelli - Iowa - Freshman
7 - Jon Jay Chavez - Cornell - Junior
8 - Chandler Rogers - Oklahoma State - Junior

I think Chandler Rodgers bumps up making room for returning AA Joe Smith, giving us this look:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Vincenzo Joseph - Penn State - Sophomore
3 - Evan Wick - Wisconsin - Freshman
4 - Chance Marsteller - Lock Haven - Junior
5 - David McFadden - Virginia Tech - Sophomore
6 - Alex Marinelli - Iowa - Freshman
7 - Jon Jay Chavez - Cornell - Junior

Previous AAs
Logan Massa 3rd 2017 (MICH)
Joe Smith 7th, 4th 2016-2017 (OKST)

Isaiah White (NEB) is the sole returning R12. Joseph emerges as a strong favorite, although Massa and Marinelli could challenge him. I don't know who goes here for tOSU. The best solution would be Romero if the cut isn't too much. True FR Rocky Jordan or Jaden Mattox could also fill the spot, although last I heard Mattox was MIA. I think he's trying to work out some enrollment issues (but not sure).

Moving right along...
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 174
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Zahid Valencia - Arizona State - Sophomore
2 - Mark Hall - Penn State - Sophomore
3 - Myles Amine - Michigan - Sophomore
4 - Daniel Lewis - Missouri - Junior
5 - Bo Jordan - Ohio State - Senior
6 - Jordan Kutler - Lehigh - Sophomore
7 - David Kocer - South Dakota State - Senior
8 - Jacobe Smith - Oklahoma State - Junior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Zahid Valencia - Arizona State - Sophomore
2 - Mark Hall - Penn State - Sophomore
3 - Myles Amine - Michigan - Sophomore
4 - Daniel Lewis - Missouri - Junior
6 - Jordan Kutler - Lehigh - Sophomore
8 - Jacobe Smith - Oklahoma State - Junior

I think Smith bumps up to make room for Rodgers (who bumped to make room for Smith), and add in Kemmerer and we have this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Zahid Valencia - Arizona State - Sophomore
2 - Mark Hall - Penn State - Sophomore
3 - Myles Amine - Michigan - Sophomore
4 - Daniel Lewis - Missouri - Junior
4 - (157) Michael Kemerer - Iowa - Sophomore
6 - Jordan Kutler - Lehigh - Sophomore
8 - (165) Chandler Rogers - Oklahoma State - Junior

Previous AAs
Brandon Womack (CORN, AA at 165 in 2017)

R12s from last year are Dylan Lydy (PUR), Taylor Lujan (UNI), and Ben Harvey (Army). Some think Valencia bumps up, but he wrestled 79kg (174 lbs) this summer, so 174 seems like a comfortable weight for him. tOSU's Campbell probably goes here, but he may struggle finding the podium here as he did at 165. And the top 3 are all excellent, with two NCAA champs and Amine not far behind.

Don't know how much stock should be put into this, but Campbell is listed at 165 on Ohio State's roster.

A lot of my weight classes are best guesses on my part. It seemed all we heard last year was that Campbell struggled with weight control. I'm not sure if that was accurate or not. I do know that he had a bad knee last year as well. Now if Romero is better than him, then perhaps the wrestle-off determines who goes where. Campbell would probably start the year ranked as a R12 at either weight. I think Romero is right there with Campbell if not better. Romero would start out not ranked, due to being new this year.

I'm just guessing as well, but I think Campbell did indeed struggle to make 165 this past season. He wrestled 174 back in 2016, and was 170 his senior year of high school. Judging by his physique I think it's safe to say he's gotten bigger since high school.

Heck, Bo Jordan wrestled 160 (less than Campbell did) and we watched him struggle to make 165 as a Rs Soph.

And on to 184
Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 184
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Bo Nickal - Penn State - Junior
2 - Myles Martin - Ohio State - Junior
3 - Emery Parker - Illinois - Junior
4 - Taylor Venz - Nebraska - Freshman
5 - Domenic Abounader - Michigan - Senior
6 - Zack Zavatsky - Virginia Tech - Junior
7 - Chip Ness - North Carolina - Junior
8 - Max Dean - Cornell - Freshman
8 - (174) Jacobe Smith - Oklahoma State - Junior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Bo Nickal - Penn State - Junior
2 - Myles Martin - Ohio State - Junior
3 - Emery Parker - Illinois - Junior
4 - Taylor Venz - Nebraska - Freshman
6 - Zack Zavatsky - Virginia Tech - Junior
7 - Chip Ness - North Carolina - Junior
8 - Max Dean - Cornell - Freshman

And playing the "smart money" it looks like this (see below):
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
2 - Myles Martin - Ohio State - Junior
3 - Emery Parker - Illinois - Junior
4 - Taylor Venz - Nebraska - Freshman
6 - Zack Zavatsky - Virginia Tech - Junior
7 - Chip Ness - North Carolina - Junior
7 - (197) Shakur Rasheed - Penn State - Junior
8 - Max Dean - Cornell - Freshman
8 - (174) Jacobe Smith - Oklahoma State - Junior

Previous AA's
Drew Foster (Northern Iowa), 184, in 2017 (7th)

The big news obviously, is the absence of 2x NCAA champ Bo Nickal who is rumored to be bumping to 197. This will be a swap with fellow AA and teammate Rasheed, who took 7th at 197 last year. Ryan Preisch (LEH) is the only R12 at this weight. Missing out on the Bo vs MyMar rivalry will be a shame. Even tho Bo has the clear edge, MyMar has beaten him on a few classic matches. MyMar's 2016 NCAA title comes to mind. Without Nickal, MyMar is a strong favorite to get his 2nd NCAA title. Ryan Preisch (LEH) is the only R12 at 184, but Cash Wilcke (IOWA) appears to be moving down from a R12 at 197.

Here's the list of 2018 AAs at 197
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Mike Macchiavello - North Carolina State - Senior
2 - Jared Haught - Virginia Tech - Senior
3 - Kyle Conel - Kent State - Junior
4 - Kollin Moore - Ohio State - Sophomore
5 - Jacob Holschlag - Northern Iowa - Sophomore
6 - Ben Darmstadt - Cornell - Freshman
7 - Shakur Rasheed - Penn State - Junior
8 - Willie Miklus - Missouri - Senior

If we take out the seniors, it looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
3 - Kyle Conel - Kent State - Junior
4 - Kollin Moore - Ohio State - Sophomore
5 - Jacob Holschlag - Northern Iowa - Sophomore
6 - Ben Darmstadt - Cornell - Freshman
7 - Shakur Rasheed - Penn State - Junior
8 - Willie Miklus - Missouri - Senior (still eligible)

And the "smart money" looks like this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - (184) Bo Nickal - Penn State - Junior
3 - Kyle Conel - Kent State - Junior
4 - Kollin Moore - Ohio State - Sophomore
5 - Jacob Holschlag - Northern Iowa - Sophomore
6 - Ben Darmstadt - Cornell - Freshman
8 - Willie Miklus - Missouri - Senior (still eligible)

Previous AA's
Preston Weigel (Okie St), 197, in 2017 (6th).

As with 184, the big news is 2x NCAA champ Nickal's move up from 184. Chris Weiler (LEH) is the only R12 returning, as Wilcke (IOWA) will be moving down to 184. Perhaps the strongest newcomer is RSFR Jacob Warner (IOWA). This is Nickal's weight if he goes here. After that the biggest question is can Moore look like the 2nd best here or will Conel still have his number in 2019.

Previous AA's-
Drew Foster (Northern Iowa), 184, in 2017 (7th); Preston Weigel (Okie St), 197, in 2017 (6th).

Also Willie Miklus used his grad transfer and will be wrestling this year for Iowa State.

Lastly, with Nickal moving up to 184, Myles Martin has a clear path to another NCAA title. Only guys in the weight he has lost to were Parker and Zavatsky, and both of those were in 2016-2017.

I will do a look at the top teams after 285, but first here's a look at last year's 285s:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
1 - Kyle Snyder - Ohio State - Senior
2 - Adam Coon - Michigan - Senior
3 - Amarveer Dhesi - Oregon State - Senior
4 - Jacob Kasper - Duke - Senior
5 - Sam Stoll - Iowa - Junior
6 - Mike Hughes - Hofstra - Senior
7 - Nick Nevills - Penn State - Junior
8 - Youssif Hemida - Maryland - Junior

Taking out the seniors and we're left with this:
RANK - WRESTLER - SCHOOL - CLASS
5 - Sam Stoll - Iowa - Junior
7 - Nick Nevills - Penn State - Junior
8 - Youssif Hemida - Maryland - Junior

Previous AAs
Tanner Hall AZST, 3rd Place in 2017

Then there's three R12s in Jordan Wood (LEH), Derek White (OKST), and Jere Heino (CAMP). With the cupboard almost bare, we still have plenty of drama at the largest weight. Nick Nevills is rumored to be injured and Moore killer Anthony Cassar is bulking up to at least start the year for Nevills. But wait, there's more. Sam Stoll took a bullet to the knee in the offseason, and has been charged with making a false report to the police. This apparently is the only shot Stoll has taken in over a decade. There's not much other than speculation on the pending Iowa investigation or his health. Part of the investigation is looking at where the incident took place. While this was likely a friendly fire accidental incident, if it took place on campus, then the college might take some disciplinary action. The most interesting thing, however, about 285 will be the coming out party of Gabe Steveson. I had my doubts about how he would compete with grown men, until I saw him in the Open and WTT obliterate AA Tanner Hall and give NCAA champ Tony Nelson all he wanted (lost 4-4 criteria). If he stays healthy he has 4xer written all over him. The best of the rest of newcomers might be tOSU's Singletary coming off of a RS. I see him as a bubble AA/R12 (7-12) as of now.
