Not sure how many starters Boardman has back, but they looked crisp on offense, as did their defense. Perry looked a little lethargic IMO, almost like tired legs. The things I saw on offense can be corrected, defensively, Perry did good on the run, but their pass defense needs work. Many times the DB’s were there, but didn’t turn around, or were a step behind.
Still a good scrimmage. Wish the Spartans well this year.

Per some of the coach quotes in the local media previews BIG ED, 5 returning on offense and 5 on defense. But I think in actuality it is more, we were decimated with injuries the last half of last season and by the Massillon playoff game a lot of new faces were out there. So it's probably 6-7. Also not sure how many are going both ways for us, the first half of last year it was maybe just 3/4 guys who were mostly splitting with other guys. Best of luck to Perry, a team we respect a lot over here and wish was still on our schedule.

I read one of the BHS posters said we only crossed mid-field once? and only barely, not good, but those things can be corrected, some players who were in the lineup tonight may not be in the lineup after they take a look at the tape tonight, thots?

Pretty sure Boardman returns 7 on offense. Good luck to the Panthers this year!

Thanks! It's 75% of the way done. Still have the entry plaza and concessions/bathrooms and extra locker room to do. Should be complete by next football season!

We'll see how the team and coaches respond to all the hype and expectations for this year... Gonna be interesting and hopefully exciting.

Boardman could've easily gone to the final four last year had they gotten by Massillon.
With all the players you say that will return this year, look for big things this season.

Time for Ignazio and staff to show what they've got. No playoffs this year would be a major disaster.

Will any of the Boardman games be on Boardman Spartan TV Network? I saw a couple last year.

They should be, yes. I'm not sure if they are streamed live though.

Check here on Fridays with Boardman home games around 6:30. You can search and see the games from 2017. Some have (Terrible) commentary, others none, and others you can hear the radio broadcasters/assistant coaches mixed in lol.

East will be better than last year. They have some talent and some athletes but don't think they can hang this week.

O’Horo injured on a QB draw. Leaves the field with help... Bad news for Boardman.

Backup QB comes in and throws a TD. Don’t see a need for O’Horo to play anymore.

I feel like we're playing very close to the vest. But man Trevena is a heck of a receiver. And Rodriguez should get more carries...

Let's hope O'Horo can come back healthy. The O-Line got dominated tonight and created zero push. Got stuffed twice down at the 1 yard line. Lots to work on....

First things first. Can someone please tell whomever is filming this that a wide angle is the best angle for a football broadcast. I love the fight in the trenches but man.....we donít need a zoom on the center every play haha. I know itís HS kids so Iíll give a break.

Overall Ranking: C+
Offense: D
Defense:B-

Offense: Who is the O coordinator??? Who is teaching that offensive line. If I get film on these guys as a opposing coach my first advice to my defense is look at the way the O line sits in their stance. Every pass play they are set on their heels. Absolutely no pressure on the down hand. Then on a run play their knuckles are white on down hand. Keep that up and your gonna get smacked around every play. I would assume East caught on to this and figured out when to pin the ears back.

As stated above and by past comments Oline play was sub par. Hopefully they adjust how Oline is lining up. Will help tremendously. Passes were given too much air at times. Rather see balls thrown on a rope than an extra few seconds of air. Gives DBs time to recover and cost a turnover at one point. QB play for the most part was okay. Would like to see quicker reads but overall ok. Canít speak much for the run game. Definitely seen better from Boardman teams. As stated a few adjustments up front and you have something there. They got size just need to put it to correct use.

Defense: As first stated hard to tell with camera zooms haha. Defensive line look pretty strong throughout the game. Not sure who #4 is but he has some raw talent in him. Show a little more agrression and little more hand movement and you got a solid RE. Interior line is a little small but for most part looked strong. Would like to see all 4 shooting hands better but overall looked good. LBs about the same. From what I could see played decent. Would like to see first reads made a few steps quicker. If a little quicker on initial reads they have 5 more TFLs at minimum. Say a little arm tackling from everyone but easily coachable.

If looking at just week 1 weíre looking at a very mediocre team. 5-5 at best. Football is a game very hard to make a determination on a team after 1 game. If they play like this all year could be long season. Hopefully after some film and coaching adjustments this teams cleans the rust off. I saw some raw talent out there, defenitly playoff caliber if they get more aggressive and take advantage of practice.

Dont forget Spartan fans, East has 2 d-lineman with FCS offers (YSU & Morgan State) plus a couple of other solid senior lineman. Your Oline lack of push was probably related to an improved East team. Boardman will be better than 5-5

I would say it was a pretty vanilla game plan for Boardman.

East is very much improved. Fitzgerald inside on the line for East is committed to YSU and he's a man in there. But still not being able to get 1 yard and get in the end zone twice down at the goal line was disappointing.

Like i've always said, it'll be the coaches who hold this team back. The play calling again tonight was a little suspect.

It's week 1. Time to get better.

I would imagine Boardman was pretty vanilla for a reason. IIRC, I remember hearing the same complaints about the East game last year and then the next 3 games they were diverse and wide-open on offense. I think we're going to need to run the ball better in order to make a playoff run, but I don't think we really called anything but runs right up the middle. I liked Wrentie Martin at backup QB, I'll be honest given Howland's loss to Lakeview I'm not sure if we should rush O'Horo back even though he returned to the game and didn't seem to give off any indication that he's really banged up.

As for East, it was nice to see them. Definite improvement. Didn't catch any silly penalties, other than 1 bad snap they looked fundamentally pretty sound, and talent wise they have improved. Hope Washington isn't hurt too bad. I remember him giving us some trouble at Harding last year and I think he would have given us a few fits at full strength. I think East can win several games this year, wouldn't surprise me if they got 4. Good luck to the Panthers.

As for our opponents, Howland lost to Lakeview, Jackson lost to Akron East 14-13, and Erie McDowell was smoked by Seneca Valley 28-6. I bet Seneca Valley is good and Akron East nearly beat Jackson last year, but I think it's important that Boardman gets off to a 4-0 start.

Mooney, Canfield, Harding, and Fitch all look to be pretty good.

I’d agree I’m comfortable with Martin as well if he has to play. The paper and the news outlets got it wrong last night saying O’Horo came back and threw a TD after he got hurt. It was Martin who threw the TD to Kreps.

Strangely, looks like numbers are a little down. Maybe 60 kids on the roster. Sideline looked a little thin to me.

60 kids is a good # for a D-2 School. I’d guess not too many in D-2 other than the Massillon’s or private schools have any more. I think Massillon Perry only had roughly 50 and they’re a similar type school plus went to title game 2x recently. 60 is the new 75-80.

Also I wouldn’t worry too much on 1st game. I do think East looked considerably better all-around. Fundamentally better too and limited dumb mistakes/penalties. They will win a few games for sure. Might even give Ursuline a good run next week. I think Boardman kept things pretty simple.

I saw Aiden Slocum, a sophomore started at WR along with Trevena and Kreps. Slocum is the grandson of former YSU Mens Basketball coach Jerry Slocum. Kid is pretty athletic.
