Any time you hold Chip Kelly to 17 points on his home turf you’ve gotta be pretty freakin pleased. Nice work Coach Fickell.

(By the way, Fick’s defense held Chip’s offense to 17 points another time, back in the 2010 Rose Bowl)

UCLA may not be a great team this year but they have high level talent and a high level coach. Great win for UC.

I don't want to put the cart ahead of the horse but looking at the UC schedule I see winnable games the next 6 weeks...Miami, Alabama A&M, Ohio, UConn, Tulane, Temple. They are @SMU Oct 27th which will be a test. I like what I saw from the defense and the offense has potential if they can get some semblance of a passing game.

Good win, American looks a little down from last year, UC should at least be bowl eligible this year. Good coaching/ game management by ....,;.,;; Fickell

The defense did a complete 180 from last year. Off the top of my head, I can't remember anything close to that during Tuberville's tenure here.

According to the announcers, Cincinatti was actually younger than UCLA so I don't think that's an excuse for them. They chose to play who they played. Going for 4th down on their own 35 didn't have anything to do with the age of the players.

And what's with the crowd there? Stands nearly empty when the game started.

I've been waiting for Coach Fickell to put some kind of a "stamp" on this team. It looks like he did it yesterday......as in a toughness, both physically and in spirit.
When it counted, everybody knew what we were going to do.......Warren up the gut......and they still didn't stop it. Not to mention, he showed them that he had faith in their ability by eschewing the FG opportunities late in the game.
After a year working out of TT's shadow, this program now reflects its coach.

That said, our receivers just can't seem to get any separation.

I was lucky enough to go to the game and the crowd was a bit late in arriving due to heavy traffic. However, by mid first quarter, the place was about 60% full with all the empty seats in the “sunny side” of the stadium, while most of the seats on the shady side were full. The Rose Bowl Stadium holds 91,000 and the game drew 54,000. It's not often UC plays in front of 54,000 fans.

Agreed, their schedule is very friendly up front and itís not inconceivable that UC gets out to a 6-0 or 7-0 start.

I loved that call to go for it on 4th and 3 for the touchdown. Big balls and it paid off.

Well, let's not get carried away.
Initially, the ball was on the 2 1/2 yard line. Luke sent in the FG team. Only when UCLA got whistled for 12 men (and the ball moved to just outside the 1) was the FG team called off and the 'Cats went for the TD.
I thought the "Bib Balls" call was on the previous series (4th and 2 from about the 12) when Fickell went for the 1st down.

I liked the philosophy both times!

1) Indeed, this was a watershed moment for Coach Fickell in putting his stamp on the program! This win will pay big dividends in recruiting, 2018 attendance, etc...

2) Being at the game, you'd swear their DB's were super glued to our WR's.

Yep, there are definite concerns with the offense. One of them, as you point out, is that our receivers just couldn't get open.
I hate to play the party pooper, but this UCLA team -- especially with 6 players suspended -- didn't look very impressive, especially with all the freshmen on the field. Their freshman QB wasn't too good.
But, after what we've seen the past couple of years, I think Luke has things looking better.

P.S. Were you on the shade side or the hot sunny side? On TV, it looked like the stadium was pretty empty as they primarily showed the sunny side. I was surprised to hear there were 54,000+.

Agreed that UCLA will struggle to win more than a few games this season. Also, 2019 is probably when we’ll have a real feel for the Luke Fickell Cats.

To answer your question, I (along with my daughter and son-in-law) was in the shade by design. The UC fan section was in the sun but I simply purchased seats off the UCLA website and picked my desired location. Their fans were very gracious in putting up with me!

UC is a 1pt underdog tonight. Did Miami get a lot better this summer or is that just a bad line? Regardless it should be an extremely ugly game tonight at PBS in the rain. Game is on Fox 19 FYI

Yeah I noticed that as well and took UC +1. I figured that I’m either a huge sucker and fell for the trap or Vegas just doesn’t know these two teams as intimately as they know the bigger schools and pro sports.

Nevertheless, great follow up to the win at UCLA by shutting out your rival

13 in a row and the victory bell stays in Cincinnati!

the weather definitely favored the bearcats. miami and ucla are easily the best 0-2 teams in the country, but that sure doesnt help the strength of schedule.

the American conference looked far better this week, except smu and temple. two very solid teams the last few seasons who both look horrendous this year.

Jumped all over that line as it made absolutely no sense. Spent the better part of two days trying to figure out what the smart guys were basing it off of.

I hope the passing game develops as Ridder gets more comfortable in his role but the defense has been astounding through 2 games. The oddsmakers must've been in love with Marshall to think that losing to them by a TD was more impressive than beating UCLA in the Rose Bowl.
