Anyways, back to current affairs. I think I like us tonight against Anna. From what I've read on here we should match up pretty well against us. Our Run D is our strength and Anna loves to run. Now if we can run on them is the real question. Unfortunately I cannot attend tonight so probably no score updates on here from our game.

Agree. Looks like Anna and St. Henry are in a tight game. No real surprise there.

Big congrats to Parkway and New Bremen! Was St Henry's XP blocked or did they flat out miss it?

Agreed. NB came ready to play.

Congrats to the Cards on a hard fought victory. Good luck the rest of the way!

New Bremen-seemed like the most physical team we have played this year. We didn't look ready for that.

They went for two and the run was short of the goal.

When was the last time Parkway and New Bremen both won a league game on the same night. Cardinals still very much in the hunt for a play - off spot.

Versailles must really be down. That was always a strong football town. Our friends over there are not used to this.

Spending a good amount of time in Versailles, I've always felt they're the most prideful MACtown. Wonder how Tigerball is handling this drought.

Ryan Bertke kicker for New Bremen had one heck of a night, making 4 fg's.

The kid has some range. He was pretty solid at 40 yards.

NB forced a punt by FR. The snap was bad, the punt was blocked. The NB player lost his helmet in the block attempt, chased down the FR punter and was the first to touch the ball. The ball was knocked out of the back of the end zone. It was ruled a safety.

After the play, the officials huddled, then threw a flag. A 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on NB. The result was 15 yards and an automatic first down. FR would score a TD on the drive.

It was ruled that the NB player after losing his helmet was not allowed to continue in the play. The officials even took the time to pull out a rulebook and look up the rule upon NB coach request.

Crazy play but kudos to the official who made the correct call.

Seems odd that it would be considered an "Unsportsmanlike". Personally, shows never quit. Before you bring up the safety thing, l understand, but unsportsmanlike?????. Couldn't it be something like an equipment infraction or something?

Same thing happened to a ML player last season, plus college also has the same rule I believe.

It sounds like the exact ruling in that case would be failing to correct missing or required equipment which is an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty. The player may have been able to avoid the penalty if he had immediately put his helmet back on before continuing the play.

Incidentally, "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalties do not result in an automatic first down. However, the 15 yards is usually enough to make the line to gain. An opposing defender at my game last week got an unsportsmanlike penalty at the 16 yd. line on a 2nd and 10 that resulted in an incomplete pass. The penalty was half the distance, so it was 2nd and 2 at the 8.

Only 4 defensive penalties in HS result in automatic first downs:
Pass interference, and the 3 different roughing penalties (passer, kicker/holder, and snapper).

It gets confusing because NCAA rules differ, and then there's the NFL where nearly every defensive penalty results in a 1st down because they want the teams to be able to score more easily.

Just found this chart which is rather handy in deciphering penalties and the enforcement of penalties:
