I remember not too long ago they were a small district. We played them in the D3 basketball regional championship in Vandalia. Olentangy has grown quickly.

Indeed. The district has added 3 HSs in the last 15 years.

Looks like no one is getting moved up to fill their spot. Now there are only 71 teams in DI.

Makes up for having 73 last year (thanks to West Clermont getting added and no one dropping)

Think all four will be D1 in a few years. Look for Hilliard to be the next to add another HS.

Another yawn fest, non-news item. Doesn't matter since Tangy was never making the playoffs this year anyway.

That Dublin/Powell area has too many people. Makes the rest of Ohio look poor

The rest of Ohio IS poor.
What is making this region unique isn't the wealth. It's the YOUNG wealth. These people have kids in school. A rapid rise of young population but once they are out of school.... what happens to all that school space as the neighborhoods fill with empty nesters? You either keep building houses, making the place even more crowded and conjested and moving in more kids or you knock down schools at tremendous coast or you lower the income of the entire area so more families can move in. All this served by one road. lol. What a zoo. Anyone owning a higher valued house in that area better sell as soon as those kids are out the door because that system is going to crash. Too much spike.

Too bad for Olentangy... they may have had a better chance of making the post season in region 2 than they do in region 8.

Hypothetical. If Berlin's opening caused the other three to all drop to D-II would the OHSAA move schools up to retain balance? Would they realign regions? Or leave region 8 lopsided?
Also do we know basketball numbers?

I don't think the OHSAA would've revised the divisional cutoffs. They didn't do it back in the fall of 2010 after Toledo Libbey and Cleveland East closed the previous summer. When a school opens or closes, the other schools in the district provide new enrollment numbers for grades 10-12 in the fall, and the OHSAA uses the existing cutoffs to assign them to their divisions. In 2010, the number of schools in DI fell dramatically because even though 1 school closed in both Toledo and Cleveland (which would've normally cause a few of the other schools in those districts to gain students), most of the schools reported lower enrollment figures for grades 10-12 due to dropouts and kids leaving the district. 3 Toledo schools fell out of DI R2, and 3 Cleveland schools fell out of DI R1. They were not replaced by drawing up new divisional assignments. DI R1 went from having 30 schools in 2009 to 27 schools in 2010. DI R2 went from 29 schools in 2009 to 26 schools in 2010. 2010 was the 2nd year of the 2-year divisional cycle, so everything got reset in 2011.
As for the regions, the OHSAA may have sent a couple of the Olentangys to another region (probably R7) to avoid having R8 be so lopsided, but we will never know. The OHSAA generally tries to group schools from the same county in the same region, but the OHSAA has shown in recent years that they will divide them into different regions if necessary.

In 2014, La Salle played Olentangy in the DII State semi-final at Dayton's Welcome stadium. http://gcls.gclsports.com/fbGameStat...?gameid=204790. Olentangy moved up to DI after winning R5 and playing the R6 winner in the state semi-final that year.

1. There were only 2 regions in DI that year, so R5 back then is what R7 is today.
2. Fall 2015 was the beginning of the new enrollment cycle. Olentangy's enrollment placed them in DI which was still operated as 2 regions that year. The OHSAA went back to having 4 DI regions for the 2016 season.

My point was that Olentangy was only in DI for football for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 seasons. Now they are returning to the division they were in prior to the 2015 season.

That's what I kind of figured. Coach Nori is a good coach and will do an outstanding job once he gets an entire senior class to go with the rest of the grades. Good luck the rest of the way!
