Graham to compete in Div. 1 State Duals this year

Graham will be competing in Division 1 State Duals this season.
They will still be in D2 for individual State Tournament.

Should make for some interesting matchups...

The OHSAA is really dumb. Why is a D2 school competing against D1's, in duals?

I think Graham handles Eds this year and I do not think it will be that competitive this year. Next year may be a different story

For the final 8 teams, this would be better if it was made a round robin team dual; teams would wrestle for 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. Why travel so far for 1 match? Schools can get there money's worth.

Because Graham has no competition in D2. I would bump up too if I were them.

In the dual team state tournament, the OHSAA is allowing teams the right to "opt up" to Division I. The do not allow this for any of the "normal" team sports, but since dual team wrestling has "emerging sport" status this non-normal rule is allowed.

We shall see if Graham chooses to opt up to DI for dual team. I think they should. I would project them to win, though their path will obviously be much more competitive. As presently constituted, the DII dual team state series is a total waste of time in terms of assessing a champion -- Graham is winning every dual, any match they don't win 11/12 or more weight classes is a small miracle.

There are two reasons for the present structure of the dual team state series:
(1) every other team (advancement) sport operates as single-elimination in the playoffs
(2) to hold the event in one day using the desired facility (St. John Arena) constrains the structure of the event

If Graham chooses to compete in DI, I am interested in where OHSAA assigns them. I hope it is to a region consisting of Central District teams, as that's where the "black hole" is right now in DI for the dual team tournament (it should be noted that Olentangy Liberty choosing not to compete in the dual team state series precludes the central district of a team that has been state level competitive the last couple of years). The southwest has LaSalle and Elder that are viably competitive at the state level for this coming year (Mason fit that description last year as well); the "north" has St. Edward, Brecksville, Elyria, Wadsworth, and Massillon Perry with four of those teams getting to go down state.

Unfortunately, SPG can't move up until 2018-2019 season. Its too bad because they have a a sensational Senior class this year that will be very hard to replace for the 2018-2019 DI State Duals. Lasalle only has one Senior on their already stacked lineup. I could see Lasalle beating SPG handily next year and if they are in the same SW district, SPG may not even make it to Columbus for the finals.

The negative I see with this, is the Central is still trying to improve its state footprint as far as wrestling goes. And now you basically shift them to only getting one team out each year. I think this would only discourage teams from participating and maybe have a negative affect on the growth of the sport in Central Ohio.

Doubt it. Free matches for everyone that gets involved. OLib is the only oddity.

Plus, the upcoming changes to timing and format will enable those teams to participate.

So to clarify is this for this season (2017-18) or next?

I thought they could not move till next season (2018-19) when the region is a one day event?

How about some projections for St.Ed's and Graham lineups. And key match-ups.

My understanding this year. The application for the team duals had a spot where coaches could fill in if they wanted to go up a division

St. Paris Graham and St. Ed's should have to compete in a separate Catholic school division and let the public schools compete against themselves.

If the rumors are true that this will be Jordan's last year why not do it? He knows he has the team to beat Ed's and next year he won't. Smart move on his part. I'm sure Brecksville, OLB (if they compete) and Elyria are thrilled to read about SPG going D1.

I've never been a fan of the state duals and that will continue regardless SPG competes in D1 or not.

Why is the great St. Paris in the name if it isn't a catholic school?

Graham Local is a rural school district located in western Champaign County. The school's postal address is ST. Paris OH. OHSAA refers to all schools by the name of the post office site followed by the school district name. For example Casstown Miami East borders St. Paris Graham. Their postal town is Casstown and the school district is Miami East. I hope that clears up how St Paris Graham got their name and why it is not a private Catholic school.
