What's the furthest a first year wrestler has went in Ohio postseason?

Just curious. I know a 2nd year guy won a state championship sometime in 90's then went on to win the next one as well if I remember correctly. Small weight, can't recall the name.

Anyone in modern times ever won a state championship? Any first year kids this year that are doing really well and are state ranked?

Wow, state finals the first year he ever wrestled? What weight was he?

The guy I was thinking of was in the mid to late 90's. First name was Joe I believe. Had to be 103 or 112 at the most.

Didn't Matt Adams (New Lex 285) make state (DII) as a first year wrestler and win it his second year (last year)?

I have a hard time seeing it happening that frequently. Especially at DI.

The Adam's situation seems to be where it would happen most. Lower division, upper weight.

Yeah I can see that. If he is big and strong and hard to take down, could def see it happening.

I believe he was around 182. Can't remember exactly but I know he was bigger than 152 and smaller than 195

I am pretty sure Gary started his freshman year. When hr won as a third year junior he weighed 182 wrestling 189 in a strong senior dominated weight class. Also won senior nationals when that was big event. Tomazz Wilson is probably the little guy that you are thinking of. Started his sophomore year and won at 103 in 94 and 95 in very entertaining matches.

Tristan didn't qualify as a sophomore, 5th as a junior champ as a senior. Still ridiculous for a three year guy to place twice and win one. I'm not sure on the sophomore year, he may not have even wrestled the either

Might be. I will have to look at the old OHSAA brackets or the Brakemen reports from back then.

Found Wilson in Past Brakeman's #12 at 103 in '94.' #2 at 103 in '95.'

I am going off memory, so don't quote me (I was 3 years behind Gary at Springfield until I transferred).

I believe Gary started wrestling in 9th and took 2nd in state as a 10th grader. Still mind boggling but not his first year.

Freak of an athlete, all state RB as well.

His senior year Akron Springfield only sent 3 wrestlers to state (Gary, Denholm, Hoover) and took 3rd place behind Walsh and St. Eds. Gary and Denholm won it all, I believe Hoover was 1 match away from placing.

In the early 80's, a guy named Joe Ghezzi from Watterson started wrestling as a freshman, and (I think?) placed 3 times and won it as a senior. Placed high in some Nat'l tourneys and wrestled for Iowa State.

Carson Gainey from youngstown Ursuline lost to State Champ jason zaminska in overtime in 1990. He then took 3rd. Gainey started wrestling in the 9th grade and in his sr year he took 3rd. I think Zaminska was a 2x state champ. It was a great match.

I'm thinking of a guy named Algie Bond from Perrysburg who I believe made the state tournament the only 2 years he wrestled.
