Boise State to drop wrestling immediately

http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling...stling-program

To drop in favor of adding baseball.

I'm sure Vough's phone is ringing off the hook now.

Well that sucks. The baseball will carry in the thin air up in Idaho. Gonna be a hitters park for sure.

Hope Kevin lands on his feet somewhere good. I'm sure he will.

Boise St was a top 10 team in 2011 and now their program is gone. Wow.

If you have Twitter, get on and look at some of the wrestling world is saying. Basically what you said, but admin is taking a "what have you done for me lately?" approach citing poor dual records and recent poor finishes in the conference tourny.

I'll guess one of the service academies or an IVY League school.

I would imagine it costs more to run a baseball team than a wrestling team.

One thing I learned a long time ago after Clemson dropped their program right after Sammy Hensen won a title is that no team is safe.

Wasn't Oregon a top 10 team the year they got cut?

They were always pretty good and produced many AA's. Not sure if they were top 10 at that time or not. They dropped it to start a baseball team as well, oddly enough. If I remember correctly, they got a big donation from the CEO of Nike to build a baseball facility. Not sure why the whole thing required wrestling to be cut, but these things never makes much sense. I could rattle off the names of many solid programs that have been cut since the late 80's, with lazy administrators blaming "Title 9", or "funding". It's all BS.

The message they put out screams Cleveland State to me. We cant afford both sports. Call the AD and ask him what his price is and i am sure he already has one. Send me a 2million dollar check and we can save wrestling.

Im struggling a lot with this mentally. The wrestling community is always willing to rush in and save wrestling. We did it with the olympics, cleveland state, arizona state and i can keep going. I HATE seeing programs cut but as a community are we enablers? When we raise a bunch of money and give to a program because they threaten to drop a program are we just telling the next school hey this is ok the people will raise the money?

I dont have the answer and i dont pretend to. I think raising money to save the program is better than letting it drop but at what point does it stop? Would be very interested in getting everyone opinions.

Sorry for typos. Working from my phone.

Title IX is a big part of this. The Transgender thing will throw a wrench into it. That's a ticking time bomb I think all are hoping will solve itself, which it won't.

Maybe the solution is for schools to create "Women's Wrestling teams" that compete co-ed, but that both genders are eligible to "try out" for.

What kills me about all of this is there are not that many division 1 wrestling teams already to begin with compared to just about any other sport.. And even with a lack of teams they STILL continue to cut programs.. We have plenty of division 1 baseball teams for goodness sake. It's hard for kids trying to meet goals of wrestling division 1 if we getting rid of teams.

And the number for D1 programs is now 75. Anyone know how many D1 programs there were at it's height?

I'll take a guess ... I wrestled "Division 1" in the 80's, but it was a very different landscape then, with several levels of D1, sort of like basketball is today. (Suffice to say I would never have been D1 in today's world.) I'd say there were 3X the number of teams now ... I'll say 225.

FWIW ... My school's (William & Mary) team was cut in the early 90's, just as it was getting ranked in the top 20 and producing AAs, which it had NEVER done before. Guess how many other teams at W&M were nationally ranked? None. And wrestling is the one that got the ax.

University of Toledo should go the opposite direction of Boise State. They have baseball and it has never won a conference championship let alone make it to the NCAA tourney. They need to drop baseball and add wrestling. In wrestling they have had 2 national champs, and dozens of All-Americans including around 6-7 runner up finishes in the NCAA. They also had a 4th place team finish in the NCAA championships back in the '50's.

I think the most was around 160 in the late 70's.

173 Division I wrestling programs have been dropped since 1972....
173+75=248 D1 Wrestling teams in 1972 (Title IX signed) . There are currently 351 D1 colleges in US.

Late '70's there were 152 D1 wrestling programs.

There was a google doc that was floating around that had all the programs on it and year they dropped...I used to have it but can't find it....

http://johnnythompsonnum1.blogspot.com this blog here is a piece off gold, some of you honks will be recognizable the name...

He has a list on the blog called College Wresting: Gone, Lost and Forgotten he done in 2014...it's a piece that will make your head explode....

That list shows Ashland and Findlay together as one team (Ashland Findlay) Did I miss something with those schools combining or is it just an error in the list?

The whole idea of dropping "any sport' is not a good idea. We should be working on solutions to create opportunities for EVERYBODY. Eliminating opportunities is the very reason Title IX sucks and is counter productive! There is no reason that Toledo or any other University should have to choose between sponsoring baseball, wrestling, track, gymnastics, etc ....It is my hope that some day common sense will prevail but I am not holding my breathe. Too many oranges in Washington to right a wrong......

Interesting note. Boise State started giving all their athletes $300-$400 a month for expenses. This worries me at other schools becAuse schools arent going to lose any more money. The revenue isnt going up so this money has to come from somewhere.

On D2 list they are separate... Findlay in the 80's was NAIA...

This might get yappi police out after me... for hot linking another site but this post is some good stuff....

Kevin Vough is one of the top heavies in the nation being ranked as high as #8 nationally. All of a sudden an early fall '16 commit is free and clear to sign with any team he wants. The recruiting flood gates has just re-opened for Mr. Vough.

Not so fast my friend the President at Boise State has decided to look deeper into this. He put it on hold for now.
