Graham 2017/18

Way, way too early possible lineup for Graham this winter. I have no idea if reserves from last year will crack the lineup, but lineup below is my best guess. Lot of last year's lineup would have to move up a weight class. I also have no idea if there are any transfers coming in next year:

106: Trace Braun, Freshman - JH State Champ (brother of Gage)
113: Tanner Jordan state 3rd place
120: Jordan Crace - State Champ
126: Nick Moore, Freshman - JH State Champ (brother of Mitch)
132: Alek Martin, Freshman - JH State Champ
138: Jeff Thomas state 3rd place
145: Mitch Moore - State Champ
152: J.D. Stickley - State Champ
160: Joey Sanchez state 4th place
170: Rocky Jordan - State Champ
182: Ryan Thomas - State Champ
195: Gage Braun state 2nd place
220: Johnny Schafer state 7th place
285: VanHoose

Very strong lineup, and if the hwt trains hard and becomes better, could be national champs again.

They'll have a tough lineup, but I feel like a few of these guys are too high. Down a weight in most of those cases.

Mitch at 145 seems too big, I think 138, same with JD and Rocky (both down a weight). They could always move to benefit the team, but I don't see that many of them doing that.

I would say there 170 Hyden is the odd man out for sure...

I think Sanchez, Jordan, and Thomas will be the 160-182.

With Jordan and Thomas it doesn't matter where they end up .. they will win it.

Wonder if coach Jordan would have Rocky and Ryan bump up a weight for conference/post season, believe he did that with Alex Marinelli a couple years ago.

Depends on how confident he is I suppose? It didn't matter where Marinelli went, he was going to win it, so low to no risk doing that.

What does Blair have coming back though?

How about Buchanan, California? A team I was super impressed with that seemed like they had next to no seniors, yet they dismantled St. Edward in a head to head dual. I am not an expert, but Buchanan is my pick.

They had two 106's and no 126 (If I remember correctly), so they bumped up a kid from 113 to 126 to fill the holes and despite facing some of St. Ed's best kids they nearly swept all three weight classes. They also bumped their 132, 152, and 220.

Their 113, Matt Olguin, all he did was bump up a weigh class and beat Andonian. Yeah he is good. He is nationally ranked as a Junior.

Their 120, Ethan Leake, bumped a weight class and beat Kazimir. Also nationally ranked.

Their 182, Anthony Montavaldo, is also ranked in the lower teens nationally. He dominated Stepic, after last year going into OT with him and needing a comeback just to get to OT, Stepic was leading by 4 with under a minute remaining two years ago. Their 182, got a LOT better in one year.

Their 195, Trevor Ervin beat Cody Howard 1-0 and was an action packed 1-0 believe it or not. He is a sophomore I was told. Howard was not at full strength, as it was his first competition since the Ironman injury took place and he only wrestled if the dual was not secured and he was limping and visibly in pain at various times through out his matches. A healthy Howard wins this match I believe. The kid took 3rd at California's State Championship though, ranked 7th going in, so had some mild upsets along the way, but he is a stud in his own right now.

Their 220 is going to be lights out next year, from unranked this year to 20th nationally by the end of this season. He will be top 5 in the country next year I bet. He is impressive. He dodged Campbell (wisely), but I think it would have been a good match. He pinned Santillo quickly.

Their 132, Brent Villareal, (who bumped away from Hart [wisely]), is also a stud and was a State runner up in California this year as a Junior is returning as well. Another stud who could easily find himself nationally ranked next year. He also ended up staying at 138 for their State Tournament, but wrestled some matches at 132 in this event.

Their 152, Joel Romero, (who bumped up to 160 and beat Carpenter) is another stud, he is also a Junior and recently won the California State Championship, which is a single class State Championship. The largest State tournament in the country by entries. I would bet he will be nationally ranked next year too. He actually ended up staying at 160 for their State Championship run.

Their "Backup" 152, Chris Gaxiola, who was down at 145 for several duals when Romero was at 152 and not bumped to 160 is also coming back. He is not a national level guy. However, he did place 6th this year at their State Championship at 152, so he is a very high quality wrestler as well.

Their 145, Tristan Zamilpa, who wrestled 152 in this match is yet another Junior, who took 3rd at the California State Championship. I gather that was a bit of a surprise as he was only ranked 8th going into the tournament.

That is 7 guys returning that could easily be Nationally ranked to start the year, plus another two State Placers, that are studs, just not top 20 in the Nation types (yet). That is ridiculous and apparently they are loaded with an 8th grade class with hammers coming in from what their followers said. Plus both of their 106's, Leake and Poore were tough wrestlers, Leake was VERY undersized to be going up to 113.

I am just going of memory here along with this box score and some state rankings from TheCaliforniaWrestler.com, please correct any errors I may have stated. I am not an expert on Buchanan by any stretch. However, it was hard not to be blown away by what they did to a SOLID St. Edward this year. Also, a little side note, St. Edward was without three starters, who were out with injuries, and would have made a difference in Dover, Grapo, and Hepner. Also, Cody Howard was not nearly at 100%.

Here is their dual result with Ed's from the Clash.

220 Jared Campbell (St. Edward) over Isaiah Ortiz (Buchanan) Fall 0:15 0 6.00
285 Cade Belshay (Buchanan) over Luca Santillo (St. Edward) Fall 0:40 6.00 0
106 Angelo Rini (St. Edward) over Josh Poore (Buchanan) Maj 12-4 0 4.00
113 Bryce Hepner (St. Edward) over Hunter Leake (Buchanan) TF 23-8 0 5.00
120 Matthew Olguin (Buchanan) over Bryce Andonian (St. Edward) Dec 9-4 3.00 0
126 Ethan Leake (Buchanan) over Matthew Kazimir (St. Edward) Dec 2-0 3.00 0
132 Allan Hart (St. Edward) over Tyler Deen (Buchanan) Dec 6-2 0 3.00
138 Brett Villarreal (Buchanan) over Michael Garcar (St. Edward) Fall 2:09 6.00 0
145 Chris Gaxiola (Buchanan) over Nico Russo (St. Edward) SV-1 12-10 3.00 0
152 Tristan Zamilpa (Buchanan) over Brent Feorene (St. Edward) Fall 2:41 6.00 0
160 Joel Romero (Buchanan) over Michael Carpenter (St. Edward) Dec 6-2 3.00 0
170 Jake Levatino (Buchanan) over Vitorrio Santillo (St. Edward) Fall 2:51 6.00 0
182 Anthony Montalvo (Buchanan) over Tyler Stepic (St. Edward) Maj 9-1 4.00 0
195 Trevor Ervin (Buchanan) over Dakota Howard (St. Edward) Dec 1-0 3.00 0

I apologize, for the confusing nature of their weight classes. They had a tremendous amount of movement from the weight classes they weighed in at or competed at in their State Championship. I tried to make it clear. I probably failed. Long Story short Buchanan is loaded and only losing their 170 and 285 pounders.

You're encountering a problem but a problem many teams wish they had.. DEPTH. Not enough spots for the hammers to go to. Hate to say it but Moore mah not have a spot.

Lose 132 Sherman, 195 Mosco, and 220 Singletary but return everybody else. Sounds like they will add Ed Ruth's little bro via transfer at minimum. Given that and their usual allotment of freshman, they are going to be loaded next year.
