GMVWA changing venues

Coaches and Athletic Directors,

After much thought and consideration the GMVWA executive board has decided to move the Annual Holiday Tournament back to Butler High School beginning in 2017.

The Holiday Tournament, the associations largest fundraising event, generates the revenue needed to fund important events such as our Annual All-Area Banquet, Coaches Banquet and the general Scholarship fund. The decision to relocate the tournament was based solely on the cost of holding the tournament at the Nutter Center. The board would like to thank Wright State University and the Nutter Center staff for their years of service to make the GMVWA Holiday Tournament one of the top high school wrestling tournaments in the state.

The 2017 Tournament will run Wednesday December 27th and Thursday December 28th at the Vandalia-Butler Student Activities Center (SAC). We will reduce the number of teams entries from 64 to 50 to accommodate the smaller venue. The Top 25 teams from 2016, who wish to return, will receive an automatic invitation to return. All other teams outside the Top 25, and any new teams, will need to apply via the link listed below.

2017 Online Application: https://goo.gl/forms/OMC5N8Bytva7tN513

Coaches and/or Athletic Directors who wish to have their team entered should submit their application for consideration on or before April 14, 2017. Teams will be selected and contracts sent the following week.

Questions should be directed to the following:

Jordan Krebs - Tournament Co-director at coach.krebs25@gmail.com

Jerry Bey - Tournament Co-director at jbey@versaillessavingsbank.com

Mark Peck - Holiday Tournament Contracts at mark.peck@vbcsd.com

We thank you for your continued support and participation in the GMVWA and the Holiday Tournament.

Regards,

Jordan Krebs

GMVWA President

I'm sure some will be disappointed to leave the Nutter Center, but I'll give kudos to you all for staying true to your mission and recognizing that costs matter. And while I'm sure that teams that get squeezed out will be bummed, kudos again for adjusting he entries to the size of the venue. Few things worse than when tournament hosts welcome more teams than their facility can suitably accommodate.

I wish all luck in the new confines.

Personally I am glad it's leaving the Nutter Center, and I know a lot of coaches who agree. The restrictions on the food being brought in, the ability to easily get down to the floor, and lack of anywhere for coaches to sit near the mats really made the venue more of a negative than a selling point. I know teams that have left over the years because of the venue, I think the waiting list will grow because it isn't at the Nutter Center now.

Suplexer - I was thinking more along the lines of the kids (re: being disappointed). Sometimes small things (like venue) are important to them. They feel like a big deal wrestling in a big place. I remember kids back in my day being excited that they got to play in Welcome Stadium, even though the turf was like green concrete, the seats are a mile back, and the place is a wind tunnel.

By no means am I suggesting that you keep it where it is so as not to disappoint the kids. Just acknowledging that some will be disappointed in the change and likely be so for non-obvious reasons...

In my opinion I think the wrestlers will like it. With the smaller venue it will feel like the place is packed. I don't know a wrestler who doesn't want to compete in front of packed stands. Spectators might not enjoy having bleacher all day, but they will be there.

I understand the decision and I'm sure this will continue to be a great tournament, but I loved the Nutter Center venue and so did both of my wrestlers.

For a kid who has never wrestled on a big stage, a large venue like this (along with the bout board, bullpen, separation from the stands, etc.) is great practice for wrestling at the State tournament someday. And for the majority of competitors in our sport who will never get the opportunity to wrestle at State, I think there's something special and thrilling about wrestling in a large venue like the Nutter Center, even if the stands were half-empty. For many of these kids, the Nutter Center is/was probably the largest stage they will ever wrestle on.

I guess I should be glad that both of my wrestlers had the chance to wrestle at the Nutter Center before it moved. Both of them consider wrestling in the GMVWA Holiday tourney as one of the highlights of their wrestling careers, and the special venue was a big part of that.

I really wish that they would take all 3 SW district tournaments and put them in the Nutter Center to be run together like you see at the State tournament. 10 mats fit great, plenty of seating and either run the finals with just 6 mats and only top 4 (SQ's) wrestling that session or just 3 mats for all 3 district titles.

Yup, a guy can dream.....

It was this way all 4 years I was in HS, 1991-1994. It was great to get used to the venue the week before State. Plus it allowed you to see all three divisions at once. A fantastic experience!

More than 1year. 1991 and 1992 and maybe 1990. Used to watch Division 2 and 3 studs from C.A.P.E. and Lebanon get on Division I studs. I would pay money to see Shantel Sanders vs Willie Wineberg or Karl Grove vs. a Shawn Enright or his teammate, Noble.

Would be tough ask to run three districts on ten mats in the "modern era" of full double elimination. Currently district tournaments are run on four (or five) mats each.

Some sort of "follow the leader" - whether it was finalists carry or semifinalists carry was around until the state tournament moved to "The Schott".

I know it was still in existence in 1996 - at state at least. Last year state was held at Nutter.
