While two weeks sooner than they would have liked, coach has to be excited to add a couple football guys back to the court this week. Dowell, Dever, and Henry should help up the intensity and provide some muscle to the young team.

From Cleveland Plain Dealer:
- The difference is the presence of three freshmen and a sophomore, a rarity at St. Edward. “This year is an exception,” Eric Flannery said. “We have guys who are talented enough to play.” That group includes a strong shooter in Huffman to go with Blanton, whose older brother Delvon Roe starred at St. Edward and went on to Michigan State. Meanwhile, Terry can add to that nucleus of veteran guards. Flannery will lean on his seniors and moves Schmock over to the point guard spot vacated by his graduated son.

It'll be interesting to see how the young guys look early on in the season, but I think a lot of people in NE Ohio are going to be surprised at the talent level of this team from top to bottom.

Best of luck to the Eagles!

In my preseason rankings, I have St Edward at # 2 in Northeastern ohio, right behind Massillon Jackson. I think they're the going to be the best team in Cleveland, but it may take some time. Tommy Schmock transitioning from being a scorer into a much needed facilitator on a team that will have 3 freshmen and a sophomore in their top 8.

Kinda reminds me of 1995-1996 team, St. Edward's first ever Final Four team. Very young, and very good.

Flannery was an assistant on that team, but essentially coaching the team in the playoffs.

Good win for the young eagles. This will be a good test to get Real game experience under their belts. This way Coach Flan can see what groupings will work. They have many different looks they can throw at teams. It appears this bench is deeper. But youth will show in games and how they can handle the pressure of Big Time games. Huffman led all scorers last night with 15. Next week will be a good test against Cornerstone Christian at the Eagles Nest

Looks like the Eagles have some size this year. Flannery is tough to beat when he has size and shooters.

Love the way Flan has all the guys hustle...from 1 through 16..or 17. Great style of basketball. It will be interesting to see how the team progresses this year, especially when they get into the thick of the schedule.

Freshman Devontae Blanton (Delvon Roe’s brother) suffered an injury (ankle?) prior to the start of the season. Has anyone heard when he might be healthy enough to log varsity minutes?

Heard that it is a knee injury and they are taking extreme precaution and waiting on test results. As one might remember, Delvon Roe suffered a unfortunate knee injury that cost him his senior year. With Devontae being only a freshman there is no need to rush him back.

The Eagles have been very impressive thus far, especially the young talent. It will be interesting to see how they perform against national competition in California later this month.

Eagles open up with a victory at the Under Armour Holiday Classic in San Diego (http://theholidayclassic.org/), beating St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, MD) 77-56. Jack Sullivan paced the team with 22 points. Tonight they take on the host team, Torrey Pines (San Diego, CA), which knocked off perennial California power Fairfax in the opening round.

Eagles win again against the host team by almost 30 points. They play in the semifinal tomorrow night.

Eagles are looking good so far to begin the season.

Eagles led at the half, but went cold in the third as Jaylen Hands went off for 42 points. He's averaging over 30 for the tournament. Special player.

The announcer on the live video feed has covered the Holiday Classic for eleven years. In that time, he’s only seen one player better than Jaylen Hands…that would be one Kyrie Irving!

Is the announcer getting an Eagle player confused for Blanton in the third-place game?

Yep. Throughout the entire game, the announcer consistently referred to St. Edward's #24 as Devontae Blanton. Actually, Grant Huffman was the player wearing that jersey. The freshman knocked down 15 points. The Eagles won 83-79, earning them a third place finish in The Holiday Classic tournament in San Diego. Tommy Schmock led all scorers with 27 points, while Jack Sullivan chipped in 18.

Foothills ended up winning the tourney so St Eds only loss was to the tourney champs. A great trip for a relatively young team. Congrats to Coach Flannery, staff, & players!

I agree, it has a good mix of experience and young talent, they could go very far. As usual a tough schedule awaits them. Flan likes to have a big trip like that early in the season because he believes it brings the team closer. The rough and tumble Northeast Ohio schedule will be fun to watch!

And, Tommy Schmock made the all-tournament team.

Should be a good matchup Friday night at W. 30th & Lorain. Cat's look to have the advantage in the front court, with the Eagles a little stronger in the backcourt. I'd pick the Eagles by 3 on a neutral floor, but take the Cats by 5 at home.

Ignatius' bigs are better than the St. Ed's bigs, I suppose, though St. Ed's has the size to match up. Davet is a consistent player with a variety of offensive abilities both near the basket and on the 3 point perimeter. He presents a real man to man challenge for any defense. Yarian is somewhat inconsistent and the team's potential is reached when he plays well. When he's having an off night, they become very average. The future upside for St. Ed's is obvious...more a question of when rather than if.

Surprisingly, that game was not a challenge all.
