78-68 win over Navy.

I'm not exactly excited about this team. Just hasn't been the same program recently. A bunch of 3-4 star guys and no Oden's, Turner's or Sullinger's anymore.

That's because Deangelo left early. and rightfully so. When half the All American potentials go to Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina every year, it's not always easy to get them on the roster.

I was really disappointed in the Buckeye's effort in the final game last year against Florida in the NIT - until someone pointed out the team was probably "spent" from the long season and lack of depth.

It would be nice to have one or two five-star players, but I see no reason why well-coached three and four-star players can't compete well and even contend. OSU added three "bigs" this year (Funderburk, Potter and Wesson).

Hopefully, they can contribute early even if it is for just a few minutes a game. It's a long season. I need to get ready to shift from football mode to basketball mode as I enjoyed quite a few B1G and ACC games last year.

Go Buckeyes!

FWIW Wesson is a wing player. His younger brother is a big guy and will be joining the team next year.

Barely beat North Carolina...CENTRAL. 69-63

Big 10 play won't be pretty this season.

OSU's three best players played poorly and they still won. Off games happen.

Encouraging to see Potter getting lots of minutes to start the season. Played very well last night.

I thought the effort against Navy was quite good overall. The defense was bad in the first half, but they really picked up the intensity in the second half.

Considering very few Power 5 conference teams teams play true road games right out of the gate, that was a pretty good win. Navy actually has a couple of real DI athletes who are complimented by kids with size & strength who will outwork most of their opponents.

The effort against NC Central was lackadaisical, but at least Potter looked like he's starting to get the hang of the speed of the college game. I imagine it's going to be another roller coaster season where they'll look great in some stretches, and they'll look awful for some stretches. Let's just hope the good stretches are longer than the bad stretches.

72-67 winners over Providence

I guess as long as they keep winning it doesn't matter by how much.

It was a good win against a solid program. They're rebuilding, but they've had some guys transfer in from Indiana and George Mason as well.

Unfortunately, the Buckeyes were up by 10 at halftime, and seemed to relax coming out of halftime. They have a long way to go in terms of playing with toughness and intensity for 40 minutes.

In fairness, it hurt to not have Bates-Diop for most of the second half. I hope he's doing OK, or the redshirt will likely have to come off Funderburke.

Agree. Don't know if it makes sense, but a five point win in basketball (to me) is different than a five point win in football. A close game versus a real close game.

I guess a better example might be a fifteen point win in bball vs. the same win margin in football. Not at all close vs. respectably close. No?

Go Bucks!

OSU is pretty bad. Ohio would probably be 10+ favorite over OSU

On the basis of what? That "big win" over Georgia Tech?

Yeah, it's a catch-22 at this point. Impossible to recruit when players see that. Impossible to get fans in the arena unless you become really good again, which takes big time recruits.

Kind of feel bad for Thad. He deserves more support from fans than that. For some reason going to a Buckeye basketball game just holds no intrigue for me, though.

By mid December we should know more about this team, as they have Virgina, UConn, and UCLA coming up

UConn is bad this year. Losses to Wagner and Northeastern, along with Oregon and OK Stae.

I just want to remind everyone that by this same point last season, the Buckeyes had already lost to UT-Arlington and Louisiana Tech at home. That's how bad things were.

So, yes, they haven't played anyone of note yet, except for Providence. Providence got a decent win over Memphis, and they only lost by 11 to Virginia in Florida this week.

Now, playing UVa in Charlottesville is going to be an entirely different situation, and I don't expect the Buckeyes to win there. However, I think they can keep the game close, and hopefully have at least a chance to pull the upset down the stretch.

It's an improvement for sure. If they can stay within 10 of UVA I'd consider it a success. Prove that they can hang with top teams late in games.

Tough 2 point loss to #6 UVA. Bucks led most of the game but couldn't close out on the road. I think the last couple minutes could have been managed better but all in all they played decent. Probably would have won if it wasn't for the poor start to the 2nd half.

Thought they played well and could/should have won the game last night. Could actually be a solid team this year if they keep improving.

^ To the point above, I agree. Lyle is decent at creating his own shot and finishing near the rim, but he's no point guard. Forced way too many passes last night that caused the huge turnover disparity
