Youngstown Chaney football - The resurrection

http://wkbn.com/2017/04/19/eliminate...medium=twitter

Youngstown city schools are re-configuring once again. This has opened the city back up to bringing Chaney back its sports programs. The hands down most successful city series team in Ytown, Chaney fell on some rough times near the end. Looks like the cowboys will be back. What do you think?

Given that "East" never became a city-wide team in the eyes of most people, it would probably be good for a rivalry to form between two halves of the city. Give more playing opportunity. And wouldn't this bump East down a division if they're not counting Chaney kids?

Plus, more games at Rayen Stadium, gives it better purpose.

I'm all for it...maybe they could keep some of the kids from going to East, Hubbard and Fitch (let alone Ursuline and Mooney) they could be competitive...if anyone can get it done, Shepas is the one....

Not trying to be a downer.... but I just don't see it. The last few years EAST had about 45 or so kids out. I can't see both teams fielding full teams. Given the changed demographics in Ytown I see former cowboys looking at Chaney as "West side high school"

The only way it MIGHT work-related if these schools are at least D4, probably lower

Definitely forget about any other sport other than basketball surviving with 2 teams. There's barely enough to make one horrific baseball & softball

Track has a handful of sprinters getting 95% of their points in meets

Was he AD there? He retired as their football coach recently

I knew he resigned from coaching football, but thought he was going to stay on in an administrative role.

What is role currently with the Youngstown City School?

I imagine both would be something like a D3? Not sure.

It would be great if it meant more use of Rayen Stadium.

Return of Chaney football and continuing East football I believe would be good for Youngstown if properly lead and given administrative support. More kids will come out if this is done properly although I am sure the team will struggle at the beginning.

Will be nice to see for tradition sake. Sadly we're only creating another feeder/schedule win for the AAC teams. Chaney football will fill homecoming week for a number of teams. What are the odds of a talented player starting at Chaney as a freshman/sophomore and ending their career there as a senior? Austintown, ursuline, mooney, hubbard, ect have to love the idea of bringing Chaney football back.

I remember when Chaney backed down to no one and best almost everyone. Those early 2000's teams were awesome to watch.

Unfortunately, that is the case.

But one thing it does is give about 20-40 kids the opportunity to play varsity football that otherwise wouldn't. It creates an actual rival for East, which it seems like they've really lacked.

What's funny, is Erie PA is going in the completely opposite direction as Youngstown is bringing back a team. In Erie, they had three schools (East, Central Tech, and Strong Vincent), and next year now will just have Central Tech (there was talk of a name-change, but they literally have no money to buy new uniforms or equipment or redo any of the school building).

So, in that regard, it's a 'good thing' that Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is actually adding another team instead of seeing it consolidated away.

True, Chaney (or East) will probably never do great, and 'well' is probably the best they'll manage, but it is important for a lot of things. Even if they are 'the easy win on homecoming', it's still another team, another game, and another chance to play.

It's clear both Chaney and East are losing students, since their enrollment numbers per OHSAA (combined 9-11) aren't anywhere near the average number of students in the school by grade 6-12 or 7-12 (Chaney and East, respectively). So, with Chaney currently situated with 522 students in 7 grades, if they both even out all the students in 9-11, they might not even be D3, honestly. And if Chaney does stay smaller, it makes sense that they could be D4 while East stays at least D3 at worst.

The big thing for student participation, is that the need to get from the west side to East High for athletics and practices is eliminated. West side students can play and practice for a team and at a facility close to them. Which should greatly up the possibility of participation. And not just football. Football still has the problem of playing a centralized stadium in Rayen, but for a city school, Rayen is a great stadium. Saw a game last year and was quite impressed by it. Grass was good, the scoreboard is definitely old, but the stands, concessions, restrooms, archway, and parking was adequate. And the top down entry to the seating area is a great bonus instead of walking UP the aisle to the best seats.

It was pretty ugly the last couple years Chaney had a team... Here's to hoping they get the right coach and staff in place to keep some kids and make the games competitive.

The AAC may be destabilized a bit if East shrinks a decent amount. Subtle yet important point in this whole thing.

You will see Mooney and Ursuline consolidate before you see them admitted into the AAC, lol

See this is the problem...you can't even have a discussion without bringing Ursuline and Mooney into the conversation. You don't have one high school football team right now, you have 3 ( uhs, cmhs and east). So learn from them. Draw Chaney's district lines to keep boys div 5 and cherry pick the best football players in the city like the others do. Wont make east happy but they have been unable to make anything happen themselves. Then you get what the parochials have had...an enrollment controlled power...and is if you get the right football people in there.

Sounds like two of the booted ITCL teams.
