I have a boy who could pretty easily cut to 106. He is an 8th grade cadet and he just wrestled in his first FS/GR matches ever this past weekend. He is a decent wrestler, but took a pretty good beating this past weekend - lost to two HS state placers in two of the matches. Looks like there are several teams looking for 106 pounders. I just wondered if it would even be worth the time to do this for a boy who wants to get better, is mentally tough, but may not be all that competitive.

Well...That is honestly a question that you have to answer for yourself and your son. It is true that for some reason there are alot of teams looking for the 2 lowest weight classes for some reason. My guess is that the top clubs at this event will have experienced freestylers in these weight classes. It is also my guess that all the kids at 100 and 106 will be cadets and not juniors...age wise that should not be an issue to you at all.

There is a definite learning curve to freestyle...the more you wrestle it the more you learn. You don't get better wrestling kids you can pound on...If your son really is mentally tough..wants to make the jump in levels...and can take some losses and know that he is learning...then I would say yes go for it. If you worry that a weekend of losses could ruin...then maybe not.

I can tell you on our team, I would rather have a kid out there banging and competing than forfeiting a weight class. So if you want a spot on team where there is no pressure right now..shoot me an email and we can talk.
