Looks like competitive balance has done its job.
If I calculated correctly, more public schools were moved up than private?
Poor Clark Montessori - couldn't compete at DIII, now DII

Way to go OHSAA

Did the public schools that moved up move because of EMIS numbers or because of CB?

You may want to recount. I see 8 out of 11 as private.

In order to achieve "competitive balance" in boys soccer, Summit Country Day stays in D3?

Obviously I must not understand what "competitive balance" means.

As an Alter fan, I'm happy the Knights stay in D2, but a bit surprised as Alter won the state last year in D2. Same with their girls. Why not D1 for both?

Because this isn't a promotion type league. What you did last year doesn't matter. It's based on enrollment plus multipliers for transfers, kids living outside the district, not attending feeder schools, etc.

SCD went from a mid-sized DIII with their enrollment number to right below the cut-line with the "CBP" bump. They'll win state for a third (and fourth) year decisively, as these divisions are for two years.

In the northern part of the state ...

Lake Catholic and University School move up to D1, so did Canfield
Aurora and Warren Howland move down to D2
South Range moves up to D2
Oak Harbor drops to D3

Keep in mind this was done for football/basketball, I believe a few of the schools (mostly small public northwest Ohio schools) that started this don't/didn't even have soccer when they started "really" pressing the OHSAA (2010 I think).

Too late to implement this year, but there should be an appeal or application process to allow schools to petition to move up a division or down a division. For example, I can't imagine that Summit really wants to be in D3 and would welcome a new challenge in D2 or even D1. I also think most schools would agree that Summit could compete very well at those levels. Similarly, a school like Mt. Healthy that just got moved to D1 should be able to petition to move down to D2 or even D3 where they might be more competitive. Have a panel of coaches (OHSSA?) from each district review the applications. I seriously doubt this would result in a lot of movement but it could clear up some obvious misplacements

Thanks. Like I said, I don't understand it all, but Summit Country Day remaining in D3 seems odd.

Again Competitive Balance is a very analytical math formula, based entirely on enrollments and multipliers, based on where a student lives and their junior high school location. It has zero to do with how good or bad a school is in a particular sport. If you read the links above you will see that Summit Country Day had a male enrollment of 154. Their multiplier, due to many students living outside of defined borders, is 44. Added together their enrollment is now 198. The cutoff between D3 and D2 is 199 for D-3 and 200 for D-2. So by two students....SCD stays in D-3.

In the big picture...it does little to even the playing field.

You are correct. My understanding is the coaches and players at Summit were excited because they thought for sure they would be in D2 next year. It was a bit of a let down form them to not get moved up.

They should have rostered 3-4 more transfer students just to be safe that they were bumped up. Maybe they can call OHSAA and say they made a mistake and left some kids off by accident.

This has nothing to do with success on the field.

The name 'competitive balance' is kind of a misnomer

If that's the case, clearly they don't teach reading comprehension at that school.

I prefer "shoving it up the of the privates no matter whether they are successful on the field or not"

Don't you already shove it up the privates? Since they pay for your kids public education and their own private education! Or are you just a tad bit envious that they spend extra money to ensure their kids education?
