Akron JOb

Heard that Mike Sawyers from Barberton and supposedly U of A player from back in the day put his hat in the ring for this job. Any news?

There hasn't been any big buzz about Akron's opening. I would be surprised if they didn't give the job to long-time assistant Ricky McFadden.
The program is in good shape, so the administration could do a lot worse than keep things in-house.

Hearing that John Groce is a serious candidate and is very interested in coming to Akron.

If he doesn't get the Akron job, he will go to Indiana as an assistant coach and also as their recruiting coordinator.

I don't know if Soyars is a candidate for the HC job, but he might be on staff if Terry Weigand, another Barberton player, gets the job. He was on Dambrot's staff.

No doubt he'll take the Zips back to national prominence.

Heard the same.

I also heard Dambrot is taking his entire staff with him.

Sounds like the finalists could be:

Jamion Christian, Mount St. Mary's head coach
Jim Christian, Boston College head coach
John Groce, former Illinois and Ohio head coach
John Loyer, former interim Detroit Pistons head coach
Anthony Stewart, UT-Martin head coach
Russell Turner, UC-Irvine head coach

Jamion Christian stands out to me. Would be an interesting hire. If the other Christian is hired, I won't know what to say

I've heard people mention Jim Christian's name, but could that really be a serious option.

No idea. I talked to someone I knew from growing up that works at the university, and he said that Akron will have their head coach within the next 48 hours. I then tried to dig more and asked if the name is on the list above? And he said it was, but that's all he could say.

My guess via %

50% John Groce
20% Jamion Christian
15% Anthony Stewart
15% John Loyer

There is a chance he could be pulling me along and it's going to be a curveball that won't even be on the list.

Final Four weekend is biggest of year for hiring so the timeline fits. If Akron hires Groce, the rivalry will be absurd.

John Groce will be the coach at Akron. Finally dug around enough to put the pieces together. Then I saw the tweet today saying a deal is close to being done.

Akron-Ohio will definitely be interesting, but thought Akron would have been better off with a Jamion Christian instead.

Looks like they will announce this morning.

Like the rest of this century, the MAC will remain the "big 3" from the MAC East...

Groce hire announced yesterday with Akron hosting press conference a little earlier today. Recruiting this spring will be big for him. Akron was already graduating a pretty big group/talented group prior to Dambrot leaving and a couple other guys announcing their transfers. Groce is a great recruiter, so I could see him bringing in some pretty big names this spring but I would expect next year to be rocky. After that, I fully expect Akron to be back up with Ohio and Kent in the MAC. Miami might finally be coming back around as well.

Akron/Kent and Ohio/Miami will always be the two "traditional" rivalries in the MAC East, but Akron/Ohio will easily pass those in intensity for foreseeable future.

Ohio-Crackron won't be passing up Kent-Crackron.. Glad Jim Christian didn't go 2 akron.. Miami needs to get the ball on the role and hire a coach who can get that back to competitiveness in the MAC... Wish Charlie Coles would of coached forever.. Where is sczerbiak, ira newble, or Ron harper to right the program???

I think ohio/akron has been better than ohio/miami and akron/kent for the past 10 years for basketball. Don't think it's really a debate now.

It's frustrating that Kent is not willing to make the financial commitment to their men's basketball budget that Ohio and Akron have. Could really do wonders for the MAC if Miami and Kent stepped up their financial involvement. I'd love the same for the MAC West, but don't think potential there is quite as high outside Toledo and Ball State.

I'm not sure anybody in the MAC West outside of Toledo has "real" potential to do much of anything in basketball.

I agree Toledo has the most potential in the West for hoops, and I agree EMU, CMU, WMU and NIU are all very BLAH but I do think Ball State has some things going for it.

20k undergrad enrollment, an arena (while outdated) that has a size/setup that doesn't feel very mid-major. Located in Muncie, which isn't a big town, but is absolutely crazy for hoops. Also only 1-1.5 hours outside Indy. Ball State reminds me of a lot of some of those MVC programs. Small Midwestern town that lives/breathes hoops and has a pretty decent arena.

I could see either Toledo or Ball State steamrolling the rest of the MAC West if either put more emphasis on building their hoops program.

UT men's basketball has been rocky since their scandal awhile back. I wouldn't say they aren't putting enough effort in, rather it's more of a case of having to rebuild from rock bottom. They're stable and may need another coaching change to get back to the upper-tier of the MAC.

When I mention the financial commitment, these are the numbers I'm referencing. I can understand a lot of these schools not spending at Ohio and Akron's level. Kent and Toledo are the two schools who have stable programs with enough potential that spending that extra money would go a long way.

15/16 Men's Hoops Budgets
122) Ohio University-Main Campus 3,101,150
123) University of Akron Main Campus 3,088,920
162) Bowling Green State University-Main Campus 2,389,470
163) University of Toledo 2,340,047
166) Miami University-Oxford 2,329,719
179) Western Michigan University 2,183,818
184) Kent State University at Kent 2,152,644
191) University at Buffalo 2,054,470
194) Eastern Michigan University 2,031,759
200) Ball State University 1,905,730
204) Northern Illinois University 1,880,733
240) Central Michigan University 1,646,267
