An observation on attendance. Not offering any reasons for the decline between last year and this. Others can speculate on the reasons.
2016
D1 13457
D2 11643
D3 11109
D4 9675
This year
D1 11750
D2 11928
D3 8712
D4 8302
Likewise for the girls
2016
D1 4783
D2 4858
D3 4184
D4 4921
This year
D1 3115
D2 2739
D3 3270
D4 4759

Others can offer reasons for the decline. I would also like any ideas why the girls attendance is so vastly lower. Are girls sports only after thoughts at most schools?

I'll add this which I'm sure will stir the pot a little, HS basketball desperately needs a shot clock. These games are hard to watch and get into compared to their college and NBA counterparts.

Let's be real here, not a single team threw up 60 points. The pace of all four games honestly was terrible. Just isn't must watch anymore

A few exceptions exist, but the simplest answer is yes. The average girls basketball crowd is a rather intimate gathering of parents, siblings, friends, and some extended family.

Keep it at 4 but have D4 be only public closed enrollment schools and open enrollment public schools that have 0 athletes playing on the team from out of the district.

I also like the idea of D1 being an open division.

D2's increase, per USA's post, between 2016 and 2017 intrigues me.

'16 featured SVSM, Aiken, Bay, and John Glenn. Not too sure about SVSM and how well they travel, but my guess is Aiken didn't bring more than 500 fans (wouldn't mind to be wrong here.) Bay probably brought plenty of fans. John Glenn probably brought the lion's share of supporters.

However, last year's schools apparently brought less than Wauseon, Trotwood, and Eastmoor (SVSM obviously playing both years.) While Wauseon brought the whole town, Trotwood and Eastmoor probably did not bring many.

Seems to me that a final with one private, two suburb/rural and one urban should outdraw one private, one rural, and two urban. After all, 'people want to watch public schools play', right? Or could it be that public school attendance, or fans of public schools, is an overrated idea? In theory John Glenn matched Wauseon attendance wise, and I'm assuming Bay (plus Aiken) would've brought more people than Trotwood and Eastmoor did.

If I'm not mistaken, Trotwood had a decent showing for the semi-final. Particularly student body.

I will say for the D-III game VASJ brought a pretty good crowd and usually have for Championship games. Semi finals have been meh with them especially always drawing the 10:45 games on either Thursdays/Fridays semi's. Bacon didn't bring many although they had a nice student body turnout but VASJ had more than Bacon. Eastmoor when VASJ played them in the semi's in 2015 their side was dead and did not even fill the seats past the retractable sections of the lower bowl and happened again in their semi Thursday. I'll admit it's a shame the games aren't well attended anymore like they used to but. I think we gotta consider that times change and people have their reasons for not attending. I think what would bring better crowds could be having games as double headers for semifinals as goes.

State Semi's
Day Session 1st game at 1:00pm and game 2 immediately follows after the 2nd with a 15 minute warmup. (Similar to regional tournament formats)

Evening session 1st game starts at 6:30pm and the 2nd follows immediately after with a 15 minute warmup.

State Finals would take a slight change to the concept but overall the same concept. Except divisions go in order ranging from D-IV, D-III, D-II, and D-I closing off the basketball season as should be.

State Finals

D-IV final: 12:30 pm
D-III final: 2:45pm
(Intermission)
D-II final: 6:00pm
D-I final: 7:45pm

With the Dll game drawing the largest crowds both years, I guess it shows fans want to see SVSM. 🤔

My bad. Checked my numbers. That 11643 should have been 14643, sorry.

And no one should be too surprised the attendance for the STVM/John Glenn was so high. That game was the most anticipated match up of the year. I would suspect that game attracted a number of fans that were unaffiliated to either school.

That is why a split is necessary to re-kindle the support of fans from the puiblic realm. The same unfairly stacked privates show up every year and ruin attendance, as they have no single- entity communities to fill seats, the atmosphere suffers, and they suppress public enthusiasm. The privates are killing Ohio High School sports. It is a slow death
speeding up. And the competitive balance plan doesn't/ won't work to stop the rot.

Now at $15, that's an extra $280 for the weekend if a guy comes down and brings his 3 boys and goes to 10 games. Heck, now you can't even park at St John for free.....which we did for 20+ years. A lot more people would go down for the day and watch 4 games for $32 bucks....but not so many at $60 plus parking.
I did that for years! St John was a lot of fun for games...pricing was reasonable and you saw some good games with good players...free parking and the ability to find a beverage close by! The Value City is just so generic...St John with the crowd noise and excitement made the games just fun...also...you saw 2 games Thursday, 4 on Friday, and 3 on Saturday

We still take a fairly large group for the weekend and "tailgate" in the parking lot between the baseball stadium and the Jesse Owens. But, yes it is much more expensive now than several years ago.

Those East teams were incredible. Oh, how I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to see that one!

Attendance History

I've been reading these and my thoughts are higher costs than 10 years ago, and parochial schools dominating.

I've been tracking attendance at the state tournament for several years and I have been going back previous years, looking at newspapers from several cities. I have found a lot of my information from there, but I am missing 26 between 1961 and 1978 I was wondering if anyone can help with this? Most of these are in the Semi-finals in the 1970's, but a few are finals. I am listing the games that I am missing (please excuse me because this is quite long):

3/25/1961 AA final (Portsmouth vs Urbana)
3/25/1961 A final (Defiance Ayersville vs Youngstown Liberty)

3/25/1971 A Semi-final (Marion Pleasant vs Zanesville Rosecrans)
& (Fort Recovery vs Convoy Crestview)
3/26/1971 AA Semi-final (Canton Lehman vs Tipp City Tippecanoe)
& (Warren Champion vs Zanesville Maysville)
3/26/1971 AAA Semi-final (Columbus Walnut Ridge vs Akron Central-Hower)
& (Dayton Dunbar vs Cleveland East Tech)
3/27/1971 AA final (Canton Lehman vs Warren Champion)

3/23/1972 AA Semi-final (Columbus Bishop Ready vs Middletown Madison)
3/24/1972 A Semi-final (Gnadenhutten Indian Valley South vs Cin St.Bernard)

3/23/1973 AAA Semi-final (Akron Central-Hower vs Columbus South)
& (Cincinnati Elder vs Elyria)
3/23/1973 AA Semi-final (Delphos St. John's vs Elyria Catholic)
& (Columbus Bishop Ready vs Bellefontaine)
3/23/1973 A Semi-final (Marion Pleasant vs Mansfield St Peter's)
& (Gnadenhutten Indian Valley South vs Sebring McKinley)

3/21/1974 A Semi-final (Pittsburg Franklin-Monroe vs Mt Blanchard Riverdale)
& (Lorain Clearview vs Gnadenhutten Indian Valley South)
3/22/1974 AA Semi-final (Akron Manchester vs Cin Archbishop McNicholas)
& (Columbus Bishop Hartley vs Genoa Area)
3/22/1974 AAA Semi-final (Cincinnati Elder vs Mount Vernon)
& (Canton McKinley vs Toledo Scott)

3/20/1975 A Semi-final (Gnadenutten Indian Valley South vs Mississinawa Valley) & (Maria Stein Marion Local vs Mansfield St. Peter's)

3/16/1978 A Semi-final (Mansfield St Peter's vs Gnadenutten Indian Valley South)

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated.
