DIII R11 #1 Bellefontaine vs #5 Tri Valley

Bellefontaine vs. Dresden Tri-Valley @ Westerville Central High School

Let's open up some chalk talk on the 2nd Round of playoff action in DIII!

Chiefs steam roll their way to a week 1 playoff victory while Tri-Valley wins a clutch game vs Marion-Franklin...

Not familiar at all with Tri-Valley as a team however I still see this chief team making some more noise this week. If I had to guess I would say the only teams in the path of Bellefontaine for a state title being that of Bishop Hartley and Trotwood. Not sure anyone will beat Trotwood but where do we all see Bellefontaine ending up on this Friday?

How do we all feel about this match-up?

1. Great win over Granville. Maybe the most dominating big win in school history. Lyburtus scoring 8 TDs is almost superhuman.

2. Chiefs will have their hands full Friday. Tri Valley has played a great schedule. Multiple playoff winning teams. Their score vs. Akron St Vincent is hard to ignore. I think it will be a great game.

Tri-Valley will likely be by far the best team Bellefontaine has played this year. As others have noted, their only loss was a close call against St. V's, and they beat a couple D4 teams that are still playing.

This will likely be pretty close IMO. Drew Pasteur has Tri-Valley as a one point favorite. The Chiefs will have to be on top of their game to advance.

This is a tough call. Lyburtus is a special talent for sure. Every team they play will be out to stop him. Some team likely will be able to at least slow him down. The question then becomes, do they have some other players who can step up? And on defense, are they able to stop a really good offense. Granville was able to move the ball on them on the ground and through the air.

Tri-Valley (Muskingum Valley League) was average at best in football most years until they hired Justin Buttermore in 2004. He turned the program around in 3 years. He specializes in strength training/conditioning. One of the ways Buttermore has moved the program along is by scheduling challenging non-league games. Here are the non-MVL and playoff games since 2006:

2006 MVL 6-2
Week 10:Columbus St. Charles - TV won 14-9
Week 11 R11 D3 Dover - TV lost 49-14

2007 MVL 8-0
Week 10: Lake - TV lost 42-0
Week 11 R7 D2 Logan - TV won 31-26
Week 12 R7 D2 Louisville - TV lost 22-13
(Louisville beat Lake week 11 34-21 and finished State Runner Up)

2008 MVL 6-2
Week 10 Lake - TV lost 48-26
Did not make playoffs.

2009 MVL 8-0
Week 4 Dover - TV lost 28-0
Week 11 R7 D2 Olentangy Orange - TV lost 28-21

2010 MVL 7-1
Week 1 Upper Arlington - TV lost 24-17
Week 4 Dover - TV won 26-21
Week 11 R7 D2 New Albany - TV won 30-27 OT
Week 12 R7 D2 Lake - TV lost 42-28

2011 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Upper Arlington - TV won 29-27
Week 4 Dover - TV lost 14-10
Week 11 R7 D2 Tecumseh - TV won 48-30
Week 12 R7 D2 New Albany - TV won 24-7
Week 13 R7 D2 Marion Franklin - TV lost 48-42 in OT

2012 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 29-14
Week 4 Dover - TV won 28-21
Week 11 R7 D2 Tecumseh - TV won 49-27
Week 12 R7 D2 New Albany - TV lost 42-35

2013 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV lost 17-14
Week 4 Zanesville - TV lost 52-7 (Zanesville lost in state final 4)
Week 11 R9 D3 New Philadelphia - TV won 47-21
Week 12 R9 D3 Athens- TV lost 55-52 in OT

2014 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 42-6
Week 4 Zanesville - TV won 35-0
Week 11 R9 D3 New Philadelphia - TV won 21-14
Week 12 R9 D3 Athens- TV lost 41-20 (Athens was state runner up)

2015 MVL 8-0
Week 1 Licking Valley - TV won 37-3
Week 4 Zanesville - TV lost 10-7 (Zanesville lost in the D2 R7 final 4)
Week 11 R7 D2 Boardman. TV won 27-2
Week 12 R7 D2 Perry TV lost 52-7. (Perry was state runner up)

2016 MVL 7-1 Overall 9-1.
Week 1 Marion Franklin. TV won 27-2.
Week 4 Zanesville. TV won 33-3.
Week 8 Sheridan. Beat TV to break a 47 league game winning streak. Sheridan historically was the Big Dog in the MVL and TV had beat them convincingly several years in a row.
Did not make the playoffs

2017 MVL 8-0 Overall 9-1.
Week 1 Akron St.V St.M. STVM 21-13
Week 3 Zanesville. TV won 42-7.
Week 11 Marion Franklin. D3 R11. TV won 27-18 (after trialing 18-7 early in the 3rd quarter)

So in non-league games where TV played schools with a history of solid football teams they are 11-9 since 2006. TV's playoff record since 2006 (same as all time), they are 8-8.

I've talked to a couple people who have seen both teams play and they say Bellefontaine and Tri-Valley are more similar to each other than any team either has played. Both have mobile QBs. Bellefontaine has a stud RB, but TV still has a solid running game. Play calling for both teams is very similar. Should be a great game.

Winner gets to be a big underdog to Hartley.

Well I certainly don't see Hartley as this unbeatable giant... However this is a nice breakdown of playoff records.
My prediction of score based off what I have learned...

Bellefontaine 35
Tri-Valley 21

TV has their own league forum and thread on this one:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/musk...nt-t13253.html

Going to be a cold one, but should be dry! I'm looking forward to finally watching a Toby Smith coached Bellefontaine team (my schedule has never allowed it). Go Chiefs!

Of course you dont. How many times have you seen Hartley? You know Hartley hung 62 on New Philly, right? Im sure you will be fine against them.

I've seen Hartley play 3 times one of them being last year vs OG in regional finals, other two in previous years. And okay Bellefontaine put up like 55 on Granville and I'm sure half the aces points came against 2nd team D... same scenario really that win against NP isn't like omg omg... I'm not a Bellefontaine fan just supporting conference. And I'm not playing either so you're right I will be fine

As a Bellefontaine fan we aren't looking ahead, Time to gear up and focus solely on Tri Valley. Do what we have done all year, take it one game at a time.

New Philly was only good by record. Anytime they played someone remotely good, they got thumped. They struggled against mediocre teams (St. Charles by 1 and CCC by 14).

Let's not forget that Hartley beat NC Hoover by only 5.

Is Hartley the best team in the region? Quite Possibly. Are they some infallible, unstoppable force? No.

This is why we play the games.

Good luck to TriValley this week. That as great win last week against always tough Marion Franklin. We enjoyed our trip to Dresden the first game of the season. Nice team, nice people.

Granville scored 21 vs the Chiefs 1st team. With 3 mins to go in the first half, and the score 21-14, Granville self destructed which netted the Chiefs 4 TDs. Bellfontaine was certainly the better team, but the score might be a bit misleading.

If I were a betting man I would venture to say that Hartley score was also a bit misleading lol

I know nothing about Bellefontaine, but I came away very impressed by Tri-Valley after the STVM game. I know at this point in the season, a Week 1 game isn't very telling, but I suspect TV will give them everything they can handle on Friday night.

I have a son on the team and promise you, Bellefontaine is not overlooking Tri Valley. Their schedule and talent is impressive. It will take great effort to knock them off. Go Chiefs!

I have watched both teams this season. Trotwood is in a different stratosphere. They are dominant on both sides of the ball. It would take a perfect game to beat them. Lyburtus will be someone they have to worry about but you have to also stop them, and that's tough.

FWIW.. Trotwood would probably win d2 this year and maybe d1 or at least be a heavy contender. They are that good.

I like this matchup, 2 schools playing with home grown talent. Dover had a nice series with TV, they always had excellent line play on both sides of the ball and I would suspect they are still operating in the same manner. Best of luck to TV,and to the winner against Hartley.

Last week was the healthiest Tri-Valley has been since the start of the season. Had 1 season ending injury to a solid player. It's week 12 and almost every team has some injuries.

Everyone thinks their team is better than what they are. We are all homers. Realistically this game is a coin flip. Turnovers, penalties, missed opportunities decide the outcome.

Well shoot, letís just anoint them champs of Ohio give them all seven trophies. Cancel the rest of the playoff games so these other boys can focus on the upcoming basketball and wrestling seasons that they actually might have a chance at success.

Doing a bit too much there my friend. Ask any Bellefontaine person on Yappi and they will tell you I've been campaigning for you guys all year long. I think you have an excellent team. I am by no means saying anything you just said. That's ridiculous. All I am saying is Trotwood is sensational. I wish you all the luck.
