Morocco vs. Iran has been terrible, Iran especially.

Expanding the field to 48 is going to be terrible. There will be no excitement in qualification rounds and the early rounds of the actual tournament will be full of bad soccer. I'm sure people will be lining up to buy tickets to Azerbaijan vs. New Zealand.

Level of play was not very good Mor/iran. Did you see the header own goal by Morroco? God awful.

The 32 from this year plus 16 more in four years. Tell me which 16 you would "seed".
Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay
Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran
France, Australia, Peru, Denmark
Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria
Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England
Poland, Senegal, Columbia, Japan

Spain looks really good but Ronaldo is the man.

Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England
Poland, Senegal, Columbia, Japan
The 2018 "seeds" from this list were Russia (gets a top seed as host), Portugal, France, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Belgium and Poland. Poland is a big surprise, but they had a very high FIFA ranking, so they deserve to be in the first pot. The "second pot" was Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Columbia, Mexico, Uruguay and Croatia. So those would be the top sixteen "seeds" for this year's World Cup.

The "third pot" was Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal and Iran. The "bottom pot" would be the lowest ranked teams: Serbia, Nigeria, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

One team from each pot gets randomly drawn to each group, in order to balance the group play. The power teams generally avoid each other in group play, but sometimes a Spain-Portugal or Belgium-England type game is unavoidable, when a team from the second pot is very good.

In 2022, the FIFA rankings will change, but I'm sure we'll still see the traditional powers, like Germany, Brazil and Spain in the "first pot".

EDIT: In 2022, there will still be just 32 teams in the World Cup. The new format to include 48 teams won't be until 2026. In 2026, we could see a 3-team group something like: Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Belize or France, Morocco and Vietnam. Terrible idea.

Yep. Horrible idea. The 3-team groups will be awful. The excitement of a 3-team group of Brazil, Azerbaijan and New Zealand.

I'm not talking about this year, I'm talking about when 48 teams compete. I watched this year's drawing as a matter of fact. With 48 teams, and these 32 teams advancing, and Italy and the Netherlands probably making it, the "seeding" for a 48 team field would have the "bottom pot" be the "minnows" of the draw. How do you see the game skeds? A plays B, B plays C and then A plays C. A beats B 2-1 and B beats C 6-0 Now A and B each have 3 points, but B has a goals advantage. Now, in the final game of the "group" A must beat C at least 6-0 in order to advance/ With 16 more teams being added to the mix, I can see games with scores of double digits to zero in order for a team to advance to the knock out round. I can't think this will be good for soccer. or a way to attract new fans.

Yep, it seems like it will be a mess. Scores could get ugly, with the big boys playing minnows that shouldn't even be there. We'll find out in eight years.

12 years in West Berlin made me a follower of Germany. Being there for 1974 was unbelievable. Went to Frankfurt for the opening match, 0-0 draw Yugoslavia and Brazil. Later that evening, while waiting for the train back to Berlin, had a very interesting conversation about the days events in a mixture of Russian, German and English with three Yugo supporters. "Adult beverages" aided in the conversation.

Mexico is playing about as well as they possibly can against Germany, who has looked out of sync so far. Mexico is going to run themselves into the ground as this pace, though. I don't see 1-0 holding.

Funny that Germany was the 9th European team to debut thus far and the first to lose. Lots of 1-0 results so far (5 out of first 10 matches) but many exciting games nonetheless.

Favorite matches so far have been Spain-Portugal, Argentina-Iceland, and Denmark-Peru.
