Hoover/Mentor D-1 District Rankings (Off Season #3)

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

I started moving wrestlers up and down from their previous year’s weights. The new weights are partially based off of where they’ve been wrestling in the off season, though a lot of it is pure guesswork at this time.
Please let me know if anyone has inside information about new weights, schools, or wrestlers that they think should be added.

I’ve tried shifting the wrestlers around from schools that changed divisions. Please let me know if any are wrong, or if I’m forgetting any schools/wrestlers.

* = unsure about participation

-The schools of the incoming freshmen are based off of the previous Yappi thread. Please let me know if any are wrong or have changed.

106-
1. Nick Nastasi- Kenston (SQ)
2. Jack Stanley- Brecksville
3. Marlon Yarbrough- Copley (2x 1st middle school state)
4. Mikey Lewarchick- Wadsworth (2nd middle school state)
5. Jake Williams- Mass. Perry
6. Johnny Novak- St. Ignatius
7. Ricky DiTuro- Twinsburg
8. Nick Jennings- Massillon

As a back-up to state champion Tagg, Stanley placed 8th at Brecksville and 7th at the Dies last season. At the former tournament, he pinned state qualifier Gavin Ritter and defeated state placer Ray Adams 10-6. At the latter event, Stanley beat state qualifiers Michael Shaw (3-0) and Jake White (2-0).

113-
1. Julian Tagg- Brecksville (1st state)
2. Jake Canitano- Solon (5th state 2016)
3. Gavin Sampsel- Mass. Perry
4. Derek Fields- Brunswick (7th middle school state)
5. Michael Kelly-Barberton
6. Hunter Helminiak- Fitch (6th district)
7. Josue Tucker- McKinley
8. Jayden Morr- Wadsworth (8th middle school state 2015)

Tagg starts the year ranked 2nd in the nation behind Ohio State recruit Malik Heinselman (Flo Wrestling).

120-
1. Andrew Perelka- Brecksville (5th district)
2. Jimmy Carmany- Wadsworth (SQ)
3. Joey Hirsch- Solon (SQ)
4. Jaivon Jones- Shaker Hts. (5th district)
5. Jared Dressler- Medina (5th district, SQ 2016)
6. Kyren Butler- Copley (3rd middle school state)
7. Kolbie Lange- Barberton
8. Zachary Evans- Hoover (6th middle school state)

Perelka may have had the best season in terms of wins of any wrestler who didn’t make it to state last year.
He beat state placers Jack Gorman, Cody Moosman, Jabari Thomas, and Hunter Ryan while placing 4th at Brecksville. Perelka also placed 4th at the Dies where he beat 2x state champ Brendon Fenton (twice) and state placer Jordan Rosselli.
He also posted two more wins over Gorman, one in the state duals and one in the Suburban league finals.
This year, I expect Perelka to reach the podium in Columbus, and a state finals appearance is not out of the question.

126-
1. Gabriel Tagg- Brecksville (3rd, 2nd state)
2. Logan Heil- Brunswick (3rd state)
3. Gus Sutton- Fitch (6th state)
4. Kyle Gruber- Mass. Perry (SQ)
5. Caleb Graber- Green
6. Patrick McGraw- St. Ignatius
7. Landen Hacker-Wadsworth (3rd middle school state)
8. Trysten Zahoransky- Solon

Tagg was a bout shy of All-American in a loaded 120 weight-class in Fargo. He enters the season ranked 14th in the country by Flo Wrestling after committing to wrestle at UNC in college. Boro has him ranked at 126, so I’m guessing that the weight cut is too strenuous to maintain.

Sutton seems to improve by leaps and bounds every few months. He claimed a 6th place finish at Cadet Nationals in Fargo a few weeks ago.

132-
1. Matt Fields- Brunswick (1st, 2nd state)
2. Victor Voinovich- Brecksville (1st middle school state)
3. Ryan Wissel- Medina (SQ)
4. Alec Bailey- Green (SQ 2016)
5. Mitch Collica- Nordonia
6. Caleb Schramm- Ellet (5th district, 6th district 2016)
7. Dietrich Boysel- Hudson (5th district 2015)
8. Jake Bryson- Highland

Speaking of impressive Fargo finishes, Voinovich placed 3rd at Cadet Nationals even though he won’t be a freshman until school starts in the fall.

138-
1. Marco Regalbuto- Brecksville (5th state)
2. Luke Baughman- Wadsworth (4th state)
3. Ronnie Rowan- Firestone (6th district 2016)*
4. Tyler Wissel- Medina
5. Tyler Kaminski- Green
6. Zack Scalf- Barberton
7. Benny Simmons- Copley*
8. Greg McKee- Highland (5th middle school state)

Hopefully, Rowan is back and at 100% this season. As a sophomore in 2015-2016, he won a title at the Dies where he beat 2017 state placer David Massey, 3x state placer Harry Feuer, 2x state placer Gavin Stika, and 2x state champ Brendon Fenton in his final 4 matches.

145-
1. Mitchell North – Wadsworth (3rd state)
2. D.J. Huff- St. Ignatius
3. Ian Senz- Medina
4. Darese Sparkman- Mass. Perry
5. Antwon Holloway- Maple Hts.
6. Brady Linder- Highland
7. Jack Brocco- Brecksville
8. Kris Jones- Twinsburg

Hopefully, Huff will be wrestling this year. He has started off his high school career with 2 very solid seasons but has missed the post season on both occasions.
Last year, he defeated state qualifier Mitch Skleres twice including the finals of the CIT.

152-
1. Will Schmidt- Walsh Jesuit
2. Osiris Khalfani- Copley*
3. Trevion Ross- Maple Hts.
4. Dylan Sosnowsky- Kenston
5. Ethan Silvus- Medina
6. Cameron Fitsimmons- Barberton
7. Reese Middleton- Garfield Hts.
8. Joe Voltz- Twinsburg

This weight-class could be wide open with Muhammed moving to Elyria. Sparkman was wrestling up at 152 over the summer, so it’s possible that he ends up at this weight with the Vinases at 138 and 145.

160-
1. David Carr- Mass. Perry (1st, 1st, 1st state)
2. Michael Ferree – Fitch (SQ)
3. Najee Lockett- St. Ignatius (6th district)
4. Ben Vanadia – Brecksville (2nd middle school state)
5. Alex Cefaratti- Twinsburg
6. Mason McMillen- Wadsworth
7. Gavin Ziol- Parma
8. Mason Coleman- Hudson

Carr claimed a Junior National Freestyle title in Fargo where he avenged an earlier loss to Penn State recruit Joe Lee in the semifinals.
Carr wrestled 152 for the freestyle state tournament, so he may be down at that weight for the season. He enters the year ranked #1 in the country.

Ferree posted a huge win over PA state champ Edmond Ruth at Junior Nationals in Fargo.

170-
1. Emil Soehnlen- Mass. Perry (1st state)
2. Brady Chrisman- Medina (5th state)
3. Luke Reicosky- Hoover (7th state)
4. Zenik Vovk- Mass. Jackson (6th district, 6th district 2016)
5. Ethan Hatcher- Brecksville (SQ)
6. Joe Koplow- Kenston (6th district)
7. Logan Toth- St. Ignatius
8. Andrew Stehura- Fitch

One of the most improved wrestlers in this district last year, state champ Soehnlen enters the season ranked 8th in the country by Flo Wrestling.

182-
1. Joey Baughman- Wadsworth (2nd, 2nd, 5th state)
2. Victor Marcelli- Mass. Jackson (6th, 3rd state)
3. Gary Wokojance- Barberton (6th state)
4. Zack Blackiston- Mass. Perry (8th, 8th state)
5. Michael O’Horo- Boardman
6. Jack Murphy- Dover
7. Jacob Smail – Austintown-Fitch (3rd middle school state)
8. Sean-Michael James- Lake

Baughman is ranked #9 in the country by Flo Wrestling, albeit at 170.

Marcelli earned double All-American honors in Junior Freestyle and Greco at Fargo.

195-
1. Michael Drobnik- St. Ignatius (SQ)
2. Chris Suarez- Wadsworth
3. Dayton Robin- Dover
4. Nick Franks- Brecksville
5. Breylon Douglas- Fitch
6. Jarin Curtis- Mass. Perry
7. Paul Zentiska- Barberton
8. Tyler Tolarchyk- Mass. Jackson

We could potentially see 4 state placers at 182. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone decides to eat and grow into this weight class which could be more wide open.
State qualifier Drobnik is looking like the preseason favorite as he hopes to continue the trend of Ignatius wrestlers earning success at 195. His two predecessors, Kyle Vilsack and Joe Conway both placed at the state tournament.

220-
1. Clay McComas- Wadsworth (5th district, SQ 2016)
2. Ben Smith- Hoover (5th district 2016)
3. Adam Luster- Mass. Perry (SQ)
4. Aidan Gill- St. Ignatius (SQ)
5. Daniel Tilley- Firestone
6. Caleb Puchajda- Cuyahoga Falls
7. Riley Warner- Dover
8. Kenneth Koah- McKinley

Smith had a quality showing at Fargo where he finished a match shy of All-American, losing a 15-14 bout with 4th place finisher Antonio McCloud who enters the season as the state title favorite in D-1.

285-
1. Jordan Earnest- Wadsworth (4th state)
2. Zach D’Anna- Brecksville (8th state)
3. Michael Mather- Lake (5th district)
4. Tyler Petrey- Fitch (6th district)
5. Tyjuan Hill- Bedford
6. Max Millen- Mass. Perry
7. William Gallien- Copley
8. Richard Morrocco- Stow

Earnest enters the year ranked #14 in the country by Flo Wrestling. He’ll also be the state title favorite at this weight which also returns state placers Lee, Hamdan, Moore-Nash, and D’Anna.

Teams:
1. Brecksville
2. Wadsworth
3. Massillon Perry
4. St. Ignatius
5. Medina
6. Austintown Fitch
7. Brunswick
8. Barberton

I flip-flopped Perelka and Tagg based off of Boro’s rankings. He has more insight that I do into who will wrestle which weight, and it would help the team if Tagg can win a state title at a deeper 126 weight class leaving 120 open for Perelka.
If their freshmen can impact the district as significantly as expected, Brecksville is the favorite to claim the team title.

Freshmen could determine the team placement for Wadsworth as well. I expect Lewarchick to have an immediate impact at 106. If Morr, Hacker, and Messer can push for placement, Wadsworth will be neck and neck with Brecksville in the team race.

Perry is a very good team with some under the radar wrestlers who could help push the Panthers into the discussion for a team title.
As a back-up, Williams pinned district placer Helminiak in their dual meet with Austintown last year.
The Vinas twins (I assume that they are twins) could make an immediate impact around the 138-152 range. Dominic was a middle school state placer last year, and I assume that they’ll fill in around Sparkman depending where he goes.
Another factor could be where Carr decides to wrestle. He’s obviously the state title favorite at 152 or 160, but his weight choice will affect the rest of the line-up.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

Great job as usual! I agree concerning the Wadsworth frosh. I think both Hacker and Messer would have to place at the district tournament to beat out Brecksville. Messer really looks good, but 132 is really stacked.

not sure if gavin sampsel will be able to wrestle this season. he was injured(broken right hip, broken right leg in 4 places and broken right hand) in a car wreck in may/june. i wish him well. just not sure if he'll be healthy in time to compete.

Thought I read somewhere that the districts were changing and the Wadsworth sectional would move back with eds and Elyria

I don't think it has been officially decided yet. Right now it's a rumor Wadsworth sectional is moving with Ed's and Elyria.

I am wondering about the Wadsworth line up...not sure if anyone has any insight. None of the early rankings have Zain Title slotted. He qualified for state at 138 last year. I think he was a small 138 last year, any chance he goes 132 this year? If not then I guess 152 would be the next place in the line up. He was good last year, I would not think he would get squeezed from the line up.

Zane was a tough loss for Wadsworth, but he couldn't make 132 and he would have been a light 152.
