Coach Zerkle steps down at Lasalle

It's my understanding that Coach Zerkle has stepped down as the HC at Lasalle. Any thoughts on who they will bring in?

This came as a big shock to me when I read it this morning. I wish Coach Zerkle and his family nothing but the best. He and his staff have built a heck of a program. Hopefully the next head coach continues to build upon what Coach Zerkle put in place.

From one the worst programs in Cincinnati to one of the best in the power state of Ohio.

Well done Zerk.

Any info regarding why he stepped down? Another coaching job?

He certainly turned LaSalle into an upper tier program PDQ. Good luck to him.

I can't see Koballa making the move from Cleveland for this job. Disalvo is a tremendous technician but the whole Thomas More debacle wouldn't look good IMO.

Whoa. I didn't see that coming either. I'm shocked he would walk away with what should easily be the best incoming freshman class in Ohio (Heard, Wyles, Norris, Sands) next season - the result of his 8 years of hard work.

Anyone thinking one of the Palmer brothers could be a contender? I wonder if they would consider leaving C-bus?

He posted his resignation on Golden Cross page, too. So I think he's stepping away from it all.

It does consume your entire life. So, hopefully he is stepping away to enjoy some different things life has to offer.

Alek Martin, Nick Moore, Peyton Craft and Trace Braun

Don't think Voinovich is going to Eds...Brecksville would be a better guess.

If Craft pinned the Jr high state champion why wasn't he a Jr high state champion?

How do these four fit into Graham's starting line-up?

Seefeldt is another name to add for Eds, he will most likely be their 106.

Graham has the best incoming class. I don't think all 4 will fit in the lineup next year, I only see 2 or 3 fitting in but time will tell.

I love talking Ed's and Blair wrestling as much as anyone, but I have to agree with you here. Lets just say Lasalle had one of the best incoming Freshmen classes in the State lined up. That way no one too sensitive can get upset and the point that LaSalle had some tremendous talent coming in next season, to add to an already potent lineup, is made without argument.

It does seem odd to be so instrumental in the building of something basically from scratch and to be knocking on the door of the unattainable, completely wild, shooting for the stars category of a goal, and then stepping aside to let someone else take the lead, just as the crazy impractical goal, actually looks, not only attainable, but within reach.

LaSalle came so close to beating the most storied program in the State, if not the country, a year BEFORE getting in the loaded Freshmen class that he has been crafting for close to a decade now. This was a year to remember for LaSalle. They are on national radars now.

Its truly is remarkable what he helped to build at LaSalle. It shows what hard work and dedication from a coaching staff. Combined with a group of parents that buy in to their philosophy. And of course, some athletes willing to put in the effort and do things the right way; can accomplish some pretty lofty goals. Even in this sporting era of athletes all seemingly wanting to join up with existing great teams to form "super teams."

As a supporter of wrestling in general and of St. Edward's program more specifically, I can tell you I am both happy and sad about his resignation. I am sad because he was doing excellent things to grow the sport in his area. In particular by offering elite coaching in a place that didn't have an abundance of elite coaching on the youth and high school level of wrestling. However, in a completely selfish way (and I say this with my tongue firmly in my cheek), I am glad to see his resignation. I say this because if he stayed at LaSalle and they kept improving at the rate that program has been improving over the previous 8 years, than the rest of us around the State would have been looking up at LaSalle at the State Tournament in the very near future. Heck, LaSalle came within a nose hair of beating St. Edward this year. Now, "The Class," that I have been hearing about for 2-3 years, is finally ready to arrive and potentially finish off climbing that mountain, even if it is incredibly steep and a difficult climb at the very top of that mountain. It at least looks possible now. Which is something no one would have said a decade ago.

In all seriousness though, I wish LaSalle and Coach Zerkle the best moving forward. Hopefully someone is in place to continue the progress and momentum the program has going for it currently. Coach Zerkle will be a highly desirable coach if he ever decides to get back into coaching that is for sure.
