WESTERN RESERVE

Kirtland has been kings of this region and it continued last year as they collected another regional title. Mogadore and Rootstown both put up valiant efforts that came up just a bit short. Kirtland is again the heavy favorite heading into 2018.

Only 7 of the playoff teams return as East Palestine bumped up to D5, but SCC was a playoff team in a different region. Here’s the schools I believe will compete for the 8 playoff spots:

Steubenville Catholic Central
Columbia
Columbiana
Garaway
Independence
Kirtland
McDonald
Mogadore
Norwayne
Rootstown
Springfield
Western Reserve

As usual for this region it will be extremely competitive to get into the postseason and some quality teams will be left out.

Week 1 has some big inter-region games between playoff contenders that may have major implications come November.

-Mogadore at Norwayne: 2 teams that hosted in week 11 last year, crucial battle with tons of Harbins on the line.

-Western Reserve at Columbiana: Both were playoff squads last year and a win here would be a big boost to getting back.

-Columbia at Independence: Columbia edged Independence last year week 1 and we’re in great shape to get to the playoffs before getting upset in weeks 9 and 10.

Other games to watch:

-Chagrin Falls at Kirtland: Chagrin Falls almost beat Kirtland last year and are a D4 school
-South Range at Springfield: SR was a D5 final 4 team while Springfield returns most from a 7-3 team
-McDonald at Brookfield: McDonald returns virtually their entire team that went 8-2. Brookfield would be on the playoff contenders list if they didn’t play such a brutal schedule, a win here would get them a chance.

Norwayne-Mogadore did not disappoint with the Cats getting a 35-34 win. Columbia Station dominated independence 35-6 and Western Reserve beat Columbiana 27-12 in the other big inter-region battles.

Kirtland was impressive with a 43-0 win over D4 Chagrin falls, Springfield got a big win over South Range 20-13, McDonald ran over Brookfield 48-14, Garaway blew out D4 Harrison Central.

Week 2 has a couple more big inter-region games:
Kirtland at Columbia Station- Hornets flexed their muscle over Chagrin falls while Columbia had a convincing win over Independence.

Columbiana at McDonald- Columbiana rallied to beat McDonald last year in OT which got them in the post season, McDonald will look for revenge.

Other games to watch

East Palestine at Western Reserve- WR could get a huge Harbin win here against the bulldogs who were a R21 playoff team last year.

Norwalk at Norwayne- Norwayne has a tough matchup hosting D3 Norwalk, a loss for the Bobcats and a 0-2 start will put them in a tough spot in such a competitive region.

Brookfield seems to be really down. I think EP gets by WR their offense doesn’t seem to be up to par to play with the bulldogs offensively

Liberty was the big winner tonight with an impressive 29-7 win over Lakeview, who was a 9-1 D4 playoff team last year. I didn’t think the leopards would be playoff contenders losing so much talent but they certainly are now.

Norwayne got a crucial win over Norwalk

The MVAC big 3 all got nice wins tonight. They’re on collision courses and the 3 games against each other will have big playoff implications.

Kirtland dominated Columbia and still look to be the class of the region.

This region is going to require a lot to just get in.

I was able to catch the Liberty game and they looked good. They have a pair of freshmen at QB and RB that could be really good. Daveyon Williamson is the QB and Donte Venters is the RB. If those 2 remain at Liberty then they will be one of the most explosive QB/RB duos in the Mahoning Valley. The Leopards are very young this year but like usual they have playmakers.

Liberty looks like a possible playoff team. How good is Lakeview this year? I know they beat Howland but they might be down. Liberty carved them up on the ground.

Smithville most likely won’t win a game this year, and won’t come close to sniffing the playoffs until a new coaching staff is in place.

Freshman? Sounds like ultra bright future for the leopards.

I thought Lakeview was supposed to be decent, but who knows with it still being week 2. Liberty did get beat up last week by Struthers who lost to Crestview this week. Labrae and Girard will be huge games for liberty, win one of them and liberty will be playing week 11

Unlike weeks 1 and 2 there isn’t any big inter-region games, but there are a couple with playoff implications:

Southern at Steubenville CC: SCC was expected to be a playoff contender, but southern starting 2-0 is a bit of a surprise. An Indians win here and they’ll be in the conversation.

Springfield at Columbiana: Columbiana is in pretty close to must win territory here if they want to get back to the playoffs, even if they run the table in the EOAC. Springfield has 2 nice wins under their belt and a win here will set up a huge week 5 game against McDonald.

Now the other big games involving R21 teams:

Rootstown at East Canton: This one really got my interest, EC has looked really good to start and will be a big test for us to see how good Rootstown is after 2 easy wins to start the season.

Columbia Station at Northwestern: Columbia coming off the big loss to Kirtland has a tough northwestern team. A loss here and 1-2 start will put them in a bad spot as it pertains to getting to the playoffs.

Garaway at Danville: Danville is 0-2, but they were a D7 final 4 team last year and will provide a gauge to where Garaway is.

Spaite and his Clippers won't run the table in the EOAC. I have a feeling Lisbon or Southern, if not both, will knock them off. Then they have to get past EP.

Liberty either got 100 times better in a week or Lakeview was very overrated coming into this season. Liberty had some playmakers, but the line was very bad as well as their secondary. Lakeview normally throws it a lot, maybe breaking in a new Qb is killing them

Maybe. But Columbiana would be 2-0 against either Lisbon or Southerns schedule, neither have really played anyone yet. We’ll see what both of those teams have this week. Columbiana has already shown to be competitive against 2 very good teams

Maybe, but those two games Columbiana played have no rivalry like Springfield and Lisbon. Then you have EP.

Columbia gets an impressive win over Northwestern, Rootstown beats East Canton, and Garaway gets the OT win over Danville in some of the big matchups, all R21 winners. The way it’s looking there is going to be no margin for error if you want to be playing week 11.

Some interesting Saturday results that I expected to go the opposite way that they did. Mogadore loses by 21 to Linsly (WV) and Southern going down and beating Steubenville Catholic Central 26-13. The Indians are now looking like a strong playoff contender heading into EOAC play.

Now we’re 3 weeks in, here are my projections for R21 using the scenario numbers from F50:

1: Kirtland 10-0, 24.45
2: Mogadore 8-2, 24.0- 9-1 and they get the #1 seed
3: Springfield 10-0, 21.20- Have the Tigers winning both big MVAC games. 9-1 and they’re likely in.
4. Columbia Station 8-2, 19.85- Loss to Buckeye

5. Norwayne 9-1, 19.65- The WCAL looks down and they will be favored to sweep
6. Rootstown 9-1, 19.27- Loss to Mogadore, 10-0 and at home
7. Southern 8-2, 17.70- losses to EP and Columbiana. 9-1 and at home.
8. McDonald 9-1, 15.00- loss to Springfield. 10-0 and bubble for home game

9. Garaway 8-2, 13.50- losses to Ridgewood and Indian Valley. Win either and likely in
10. Liberty 7-3, 12.30- losses to Labrae and Girard. Win either and good chance their in
11. Western Reserve 8-2, 11.85- 9-1 and on bubble, 10-0 and bubble for home game
12. Independence 6-4, losses to Wickliffe, CH, Kirtland. 7-3 and on bubble, 8-2 and in.

SCC, can’t get a good number since they play so many non Ohio teams, so a wild card into this. Looks like probably 7-3 puts them on the bubble, 8-2 and likely in.

Week 4 looks to be a pretty quiet week, most of the playoff contenders have easy matchups. Still a few games to keep an eye on:

Independence at Wickliffe- Independence needs this one

Elyria Catholic at Mogadore- Cats are coming off a loss and playing a 3-0 EC team (against a very weak schedule).

Brookfield at Liberty- Brookfield is coming off a shocking 29 point win over Cuyahoga Heights, a win over Liberty could get them back in the playoff hunt. Liberty needs the win to stay alive

I was at the Southern game last night. I understand weather played a factor. Overall though, wasn't terribly impressed with Southern. It all runs through Sloan & Grodhaus, but very predictable play calling. SCC had some seriously questionable calls. I still can't understand driving down at the end of the first half and only using 1 timeout.

The 3 MVAC teams (Springfield, McDonald, and Western Reserve) are hurt by the fact that the other 5 conference teams went 1-14 out of conference.

They have to be a game better than most teams in Region 21 and likely 2 games better than Mogadore. Mogadore’s schedule is insane. The record of their remaining opponents is 16-5.

Yup, it pretty much guaranteed no path all 3 can make it and Springfield is the only one of the bunch that should be comfortably in at 9-1. Mcd and WR have to go 10-0 to secure a spot.

Also should be noted this region looks like it’ll require a ridiculous amount to get the 8 seed. A 15 harbin average in other D6 regions is on the home game bubble, in R21 it’s likeky out.

You think region 21 will require more Harbins than region 24? I don't think 15 will come close to a home game in region 24.

You’re right in that it wouldn’t get a home game, 24 has 4 really strong teams. That said I do believe it’s looking like it’ll require more to get into the dance in 21 than 24. A 15 in 24 and you’ll be sitting pretty good, a 15 in 21 is needing help from multiple angles. The 8 seed in 21 could easily have a 17 harbin average

Agreed. Region 21 should have 8 fairly competitive teams, region 24 will have at least 1 team make it in that is not very deserving and will get pounded week one or two, depending on when they see their first MAC opponent.

This looks like a year when a few surprises could happen in region 21 come playoff time.
