Jerry Cooper is back

Lima Shawnee has hired long time football coach Jerry Cooper as their new head coach. Cooper had a lot of success at Columbus Grove and LCC. See if he can turn the ship around at Shawnee.

Depends if he can recruit as successfully as he did at LCC.

Did he ‘recruit’ at Columbus Grove?

I thought that was why they were kicked out of the NWC

Questionable hire IMO. Cooper had a lot of success in the Lima area, however in Tenn. had a losing record including 0-10 his last season. Plus Shawnee has gone through numerous coaches the last 10 years and do not know how many years Cooper has left in the tank. Even if Cooper is successful Indians may be looking for a new head coach in another 4-5 years.

If he teaches them how to win, that'll make the next coach's job easier. I do think if anyone is going to turn around Shawnee, it'll be Cooper.

I think it is obvious--when Coach Cooper moved to Tennessee he completely forgot everything he knew about coaching. I heard he ran the full house backfield with 2 tight ends and tried to run jet sweeps, punted on 2nd and 6, and threw deep routes constantly--despite having a double amputee at quarterback. (please note sarcasm)

Coach will do just fine. Any school would gladly take a coach for 4-5 years if he was able to turn around the program. He will do just fine @ Shawnee.

Welcome back.

My point is I don't think he is a long term answer for Shawnee. He might turn the program around but if he retires in 4 or 5 years Shawnee is right back to square one. A Football teams success follows the coach, look at Versailles, St. Marys just a couple of examples.

Your point was very clear--he went 0-10 last season in Tennessee!! Don't back out of your statement.

In order to STAY successful, you first must BE successful!!!

That was only part of my post but yes he did go 0-10 his last season and over all 15-27 in Tenn. Before that he went 235-77 while at different schools in NW Ohio. Not backing away from any statements and nothing against Cooper just believe at his age Shawnee will be looking for another coach in several years and maybe Shawnee doesn't care about that.

Official word was he "resigned" but I think it was more as forced out.

He jumped ship pretty quickly when the Maag boys graduated at CG, and saw a football void in lima and realized the time was ripe for the picking to go to LCC and get the talent around lima.
LcC typically underperformed recently I the playoffs including an awful loss to the least talented CW teams in nearly 24 years. LIMA senior has come back down to earth.

Shawnee has been bad and i imagine he wants to come back to the area and LS was his best option. No one is dominating in LIMA so he likely can get kids to come back and attend and play a Shwamee
