'17-'18 Suburban League American

Thoughts on the upcoming season?

Copley just reloads? Barberton gets back to being Barberton? Revere best team in the league with the best recruit in league's history?

IMO Top returning standout players: (no particular order)

Brian Roberts (Copley)
Matthew Francesconi (Tallmadge)
Colin Rittman (Highland)
Pete Nance (Revere)

Could put a number of 2nd tier level quality players after these (4), but these guys stood out to me last year.

Let's bump this one back to the top. The Suburban League American looks to be very competitive this year.

Those 4 players should be near the top 4 players in the league this year. Maybe one of the Barberton players breaks into that group. It will be interesting to see what Kent and Aurora do this year. Kent was very young last year but lost their one truly top tier player. Will their extra year of experience overcome the loss of the big man in the middle?

Tallmadge lost two starters that were Seniors that made 2nd team and 3rd team All-SLA. They also lost a Senior big man that didn't get many minutes. Apparently a Junior big man from last year (this year Senior) isn't going to play this season. He played decent minutes early in the year but not much toward the end of the year.

Francesconi is back as a Senior and scored about 20 points a game last year. Zach Boyd (PF/C) and Sam Seeker (PG) are the other two returning starters, both are still playing football. The other players that had decent minutes last year are Jake Rensel (SR), Seth Gergely (SR), and Nick Hussing (JR). Jason Grassie (JR) and Brandon Heigelmann (SO) both dressed varsity with limited minutes. Grassie and Hussing are both still playing football too.

Tallmadge's starting lineup could change from day-to-day...just like the previous couple of years. Only three players started every game last year. All 8 players offer something a little different, so at any point, I could see them all getting a shot to start. With 4 of the players playing football, it will also depend on how fast they can get in basketball shape. Some football/basketball players have transitioned in the past without any problems and others struggled most or all of the season. It's always a waiting game.

Francesconi is going to be the key to the season. Depending how he is defended, he could take up to 50% of the shots. Best player in the SLA to get to the free-throw line. I expect him to score well over 20 points a game this year. The big question is who will step up and become the other scorer. A few players have the ability, just have to wait to see who emerges.

There are 4 returning varsity players still in football: Sam Seeker, Grassie, Boyd and Hussing. As far as Sophomores that need to try out, Iím not sure. However, the varsity team is set. Any football Sophompres would play JV.

There is 1 sophomore that is better than half of those juniors. However your right he will start on JV but would not be surprised to see him dress Varsity and earn minutes.

Biggest concern with this years team will be depth and lack of Varsity experience. Other than Fransesconi, Boyd, Sam Seeker, Gergely, Rensel, and Hussing not many others have any significant Varsity minutes.

I'm assuming that Brian Roberts is still at Copley, right? I know there were some rumors about him leaving in the Summer but haven't heard anything since.

Yes Brian Roberts is still a Copley as well as 4 transfers to the district...2 from Akron Bucthel, 1 from Akron East and 1 from Revere...on paper they should be pretty good...let's see if they can share the ball collectively.

Heard one of the transfers from Buchtel was the Griffs best player last year, and the Revere kid was at Copley prior and transferred to Revere for more playing time and is now back.

Wow! That will be interesting to see them play. Copley's JV has been great the last few years. Adding those players and the players coming up should make them challenge for the title again.

Copley v St Ignatius 11-14:St I 15 Copley 12, Copley 25 St I 24, St I 22 Copley 19, St I 22 Copley 18, St I 27 Copley 14. No details, wasn't there, just relaying scores. 10 minute quarters I believe. Copley still missing 2 guys.

Buchtel's best player last year in my opinion was Jonathan King and he's still at Buchtel. The two kids they lost will hurt though.
Not sure East had anyone on the roster last year that make a difference at Copley.

Iím not sure what Sophomore youíre talking about that is playing JV and is better than the juniors? There is a sophomore on varsity that will probably start. Other than him I donít know who you could be talking about.

I did not record scores tonight, but Tallmadge won 7 of 9 quarters vs. Woodridge. Seeker, Boyd and Grassie DNP. Gergely played limited minutes due to his ankle.

Barberton has a solid nucleus coming back but lacked depth last year. Definitely need the football players to come out for the basketball team this year.

Looks like Copley is reloading. Revere could be scary good if Nance gets some help. They are playing the most demanding schedule of anyone in the league. Tallmadge is the other team with a shot.

Are there any players that decided not to play this year in the SLA that made an impact last year?

He played on the freshman team last year and led them in just about every statistical category. Played CB on the Varsity football team this year.

He is only other Soph other than Heigelman (sp) that could see varsity minutes

There are two CBs that played basketball as freshmen last year. One of them has decided not to play this basketball season. The one that played baseball last season is not playing basketball this year.

Maybe he hasnít played yet due to football? I donít see any sophomores on JV up to this point that will be playing any varsity minutes.

Lydic is the shooting guard about 6-0 or 6-1. He's been the QB for the football team the last 3 years

To answer BlueDevil Backer question, yes he did play. He played a lot. Woodridge Played their starters most of the game. Tallmadge mixed it up and there were many times when Tallmadge ran a whole second unit.

Just a scrimmage and not too surprised for a couple reasons..........3 Woodridge starters are football players and have been on the court for less than a week. Also the projected starting PG was not available for the scrimmage. Woodridge had 9 players and subbed frequently. It wasnt as if Tallmadge(been on the court since Nov 1(without their football players of course) blew the Dogs off the court. 1st Qtr Tallmadge 16-11, 2nd Qtr Tallmadge 12-10, 3rd Qtr Tallmadge 17-15, 4th Qtr Tallamdge 11-4, 5th Qtr Tallmadge 13-10, 6th Qtr Woodridge 16-9, 7th Qtr Woodridge 14-8, 8th Qtr Woodridge 12-6. Much work to be done for sure. Good luck to the Blue Devils this season!

Wow...Sorry, but Nance for all the accolades & hype is pedestrian IMO. The team will not be the best in the league, and may be .500? If you are an athletic 6'8" in the Suburban, with a D1 scholarship, you should average 30 per night.

Sounds like Copley has the edge, with Barberton behind them. Tallmadge & Highland fight it out for 3-4. Revere will be 5.
