OJ Simpson Bronco Chase (June 17, 1994)

25th Anniversary coming up soon. Do you remember where you were when it was being televised.

My dad effed up his ankle, so we were in the ER at Good Sam Hospital in Cincinnati that day and kept hearing news of him missing throughout the day. I vividly remember getting Dominos Pizza on the way home and then watching the chase and aftermath on TV. I was a heartbroken kid at the time because I loved him in the Naked Gun movies.

The prank phone call to Peter Jennings from the Howard Stern fan is still one of the funniest live things that has ever happened on television.

The most funny thing I consider about the chase was the driver Of OJ's car calling the police and identifying himself by just his first name, as if he espected anyone or every one to know who the heck he was.

I was folding my newspapers while watching TV. IIRC, the NBA Finals were on NBC - Rockets vs. Knicks, and the game was preempted by coverage of "the chase."

OJ Simpson Bronco Chase (June 17, 1994)

We were driving back from Atlanta. I remember listening to updates in the car.

Honestly, some things are momentus. They change the world forever. You remember where you were and what you were doing when they happened. December 7th, 1941. November 22nd, 1963. September 11, 2001. The white Bronco chase, not so much.

This.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing: on 9/11/2001; when the Challenger space shuttle crashed in 1986; when I heard RFK got shot; and even when JFK got shot (although I was only 6).

The white Bronco chase?

Your honor, at this time we ask that Ms. Mischke try on the bra.

In all seriousness I was 13 years old at the time and was glued to the tv watching the nba finals. I don't necessarily remember watching the bronco chase however.

Still the best prank on a breaking news event that shows newscasters are basically idiots.

This one comes close though.

Asian pilots may rank higher for me. The fact that news pranksterism had become so extensive by then gives it extra points.

I'd forgotten about this, f'ing funny. I think the female broadcaster pronouncing the names almost perfectly makes it better.

The explanation/apology was almost as good-

It was the NTSB's fault!

Yeah, the graphics folks must have been rushing so fast to get the names up so that the other local stations didn't get the scoop on them!

But what makes the OJ/Mr. Higgins call so great is the calm even demeanor that Peter Jennings has when talking to the guy. My wife was WTF is Jennings doing playing along with a phoney phone call! At the end of the call he still didn't know he was pranked until Al Michaels told him. What a pea brain. Here is STern's recap of the call>

My wife and I were parked in front of the tube that evening when the news broke.

Anyone remember the note O.J. left behind before the Bronco chase? It was addressed "to whom it may concern" and said how he "couldn't go on like this". When they read it on the air, I told Mrs. Z, "Oh-oh. They'll probably find him dead with a gun in his hand". But then they said "We found him, he's in the white Bronco and is alive!", and my wife said, "Guess he couldn't go through with it.

It helped that Howard was such a Peter Jennings hater.

Al Michaels- "that was a totally farcical call..."
Dead silence from Jennings as he realizes he's been had.

I still laugh my *** off every time I think of it.
