National Games for 2012 Season

Well, let's hear what else may be in the works that's at least at the "significant rumor" stage. Here's one for Byrnes playing Oscar Smith in week one.

Report: Byrnes to open season in Virginia Beach
Wed. March 28, 2012 at 6:44 p.m. | By Kevin Melton

A pair of defending state football champions appear set to hook up for a season-opening showdown in Virginia Beach.

Byrnes, the two-time defending 4A Division I champion, will face Oscar Smith (Va.), the 3A Division 6 champion, on Aug. 25 according to an online story by MaxPreps.com.

Oscar Smith coach Richard Morgan was credited in the online story saying that the game, presented by ESPN, is scheduled to take place. But Spartanburg School District 5 athletic director Bobby Bentley said on Wednesday that a contract has not yet been signed.

It will be the second consecutive year the Rebels have traveled out of state for the season opener. Byrnes defeated Ballard (Ky.) 68-0 at the University of Louisville last year. The Rebels finished the season 13-2 overall after a 31-24 victory against Gaffney in the title game at Death Valley in December.

Byrnes is 12-3 against out-of-state opponents, including a 56-2 victory against Bayside (Fla.) at Nixon Field last year.

Oscar Smith fell to Gilman (Md.) 51-27 in its only loss of the season last year. The Tigers rebounded by winning 14 straight games and defeated Centreville, 47-21, in the state championship.

Oscar Smith will return leading receiver Zach Jones, who finished with 49 catches for 903 yards and 16 touchdowns, and highly-touted sophomore running back Deshawn McClease.

Byrnes returns quarterback Shuler Bentley, who passed for 3,482 yards and 47 touchdowns, and wide receiver Akia Booker, who led the team with 1,282 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Football: Oscar Smith to play ESPN game

For the fourth consecutive season, Oscar Smith is playing another out-of-state opponent in the season opener.

The Tigers, the defending Group AAA Division 6 state champions, will play host to Byrnes High School from Duncan, S.C. on Aug. 25 in an ESPN network game. Game time has not been finalized.

Last season Byrnes won the 4A state title in South Carolina.

Both teams are expected to be ranked nationally in many preseason polls.

Oscar Smith beat visiting Venice (Fla.) in the 2009 season opener. The following season they lost to Pickerington (Ohio) in the Kirk Herbstreit Classic at Ohio State. Both of those games were televised by an ESPN network. And last season they lost to nationally-ranked Gillman (Md.) in the I-95 Kickoff Classic.

Byrnes also is used to playing out-of-state contest as it has played Glades Central (Fla.), Moeller (Ohio), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) and Hooker (Okla.).

Cincinnati Moeller just handled Gillman (Md) quite easily tonight 35-14. And I think Moeller is just in the top 5 of Ohio this year. Could be a great year for Ohio high school football this season.
Go Moe and Ohio

Moeller is going to have to figure out how to slow down running QBs if the want to win the Region 4 title and ultimately the state title. I'm not sure there is quite as much talent as there was last year.. specifically DL and WR but there are still good players there. We just don't have a game breaker at WR like Madaris and Means were or Tony Harris or Cherry.

Here's MaxPreps listing of the top 10 interstate games for this season.

http://www.maxpreps.com/news/Hz6a2bO...s-for-2012.htm

It includes Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman's win over Olney (MD) Good Counsel, Duncan (SC) Byrnes' win over Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith, Santa Margarita's (CA) win over Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep, and Moeller's win over Gilman all this past week. So, four of the top ten are already in the books.

Hoover (AL) at South Panola (MS) ought to be a good one this week. Tampa Plant vs John Curtis (LA) at the Superdome, Bergen Catholic (NJ) at Bishop Gorman, Don Bosco (NJ) at St. Thomas Aquinas (FL), Cincinnati St. Xavier at Louisville Trinity, and Louisville Trinity at Cincinnati Moeller round out their top ten games.

One of the games that they didn't mention that I think will be interesting is when Bergen Catholic comes down to DC to play Friendship Collegiate, which is a public charter school that has been on the rise in football. I think Bergen Catholic was thinking they were getting a cupcake, but they will be in for a surprise, because that team can play.

Also, despite that GREYHOUNDALUM fool posting like an idiot on the Gilman/Moeller game thread, I will say that the Patriot Classic will have some very good regional interstate matchups in a couple of weeks. However, the Good Counsel/St. Joe's Regional and Gilman/Don Bosco games had some of their shine taken off of them from Good Counsel's and Gilman's losses.
