Fairfield's Malik Vann has given a verbal commitment to UC: http://www.wcpo.com/sports/high-scho...-of-cincinnati

Huge get for UC, picked the Bearcats over Sparty and while it might not have been a "commitable" offer he did hold one from 'Bama too. On 24/7 a top 15 Ohio player and top 300 player nationally. Would Tubberville even have sniffed this type of prospect?

It is a big deal for the Spartans; meltdown on their message boards, every recruiting site had him going to Michigan St.

Fickell has done better to this point between recruiting and bringing energy to the program than anyone could have realistically hoped for. They should be improved on the field this year but still may struggle a bit. The year after that could be very good.

Fickell is doing an amazing job. First off this is a really impressive staff, from a coaching and recruiting standpoint. Two 4-stars local kids already committed, landing Bacevich out of St X who has P5 offers. Just very impressive work being done by the new UC staff. He had a strong close last year as well with guys like Warren, White and Potts. A lot of smoke out there with UC and Hawkins as well. Sounds like that might be something to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

UC picks up a pair of 3 *** CBs from NEO, Arquon Bush and Taj Ward. Not that sure about Ward but Bush has a high ceiling and is a player that was gaining momentum on the camp circuit, he had recently picked up a Michigan State offer. He is one to keep an eye on.

I believe UC is ranked 40th nationally in recruiting right now. I'd think that is close to their best class ever.

Where were they at before Fickell arrived? 100 or lower?

Can't understate how good of a job Fickell has done already. Still like 9 weeks from the start of the season and he's already basically turned the program around.

2014: averaged mid 60's; [No. 60 by Scout, No. 65 by ESPN and No. 69 by both Rivals and 247Sports.]
2015: averaged around 60; 2nd in AAC [UC was No. 56 (Rivals), No. 59 (Scout) and No. 65 (247Sports)
2016: averaged mid 70's, 4th in AAC [ No. 73 by Scout, No. 77 by Rivals and No. 79 by 247Sports.com]

This year with Fickell: the UC class is rated [as of 6/22/17] No. 52 by Rivals.com, No. 38 by Scout.com, and No. 61 by 247 Sports. This was a HUGE increase from Tuberville's expected 2017 class, which was ranked lower than 100 by all 3 services, but obviously those rankings were early.

Highest ranking by any of the services in the last 20 years, No 35 by Scout in 2012

They're currently 46 by 247 sports, not 61.

That's the class of 2017, who have already shown up on campus. The current class is 2018 which is 46th.

how many of them have signed with UC? How do you rank 2018 recruit classes before feb 7th, 2018?

Don't pull a muscle with that reach. The class of 2017 is already on campus and the recruiting cycle as already moved onto 2018.

But let me get this straight. In October of this year, when the class of 2017 is playing in the middle of their freshman season, you would still consider them the current recruiting class?

No, but I wouldn't call the 2018 either, but in june I would call 2017 recruits as the current class. 247 ranking system is based on quality & the total number of commitments. Alabama is ranked 68th, they only have 4 so far[3-4* & 1-3*], want to bet that they don't end up in the top 5 on feb 8th 2018?

Except they aren't recruits anymore. Thus 2018 is the current class.

Its not so much the Rankings of Recruits but their location. Fickel has gotten commitments from LaSalle, Colerain and 2 from NEO.

UC can't compete head to head with OSU for Ohio kids but they can get the kids that have been going to mid and lower tier Big Ten Schools and UK.

It certainly is about the rankings of the recruits. The location of them matters much less, but no doubt recruiting local is wise for UC.

Fickell picks up a couple more today, including 3* QB Ben Bryant from the Chicago area. Currently has the class up to 36th nationally.

Recruit Rankings are a rigged game. Players get ranked high because the Top Schools Recruit them. Then when the Top Schools sign them, the Top Schools Composite Scores go up.

Fickel doesn't need to go chasing after Highly Ranked Prospects that he will lose to OSU or ND anyway. Get the guys that are "players" not Combine Kings.

A program needs to establish its territory. Recruiting is built on relationships.

My example of a player that Tubbs let get away that Fickel needs is Tegray Scales of Colerain and now IU. He led the Big 10 in tackles last year. He was considered a little to short and a little too light for the Big Time Programs but anyone who saw him play knew he was a helluva football player.

And Fickel can find, recruit and develop those type of players. Look at Darron Lee at OSU. Fickel lobbied hard to sign him. Urban wasn't that sold on him. He became a First Round Talent. BTW he was only 3 stars coming out of HS.

That's the kind of player Fickel has to find.

You're contradicting yourself here, Sam. If players get ranked high because top schools recruit them why do top schools end up with a handful of 3*s every year? Wouldn't the recruiting rankings bump those players if the top schools are recruiting them?

Winston wasn't implying Fickell should go after the 5* players. It's about the rankings of the recruits relative to the rest of the AAC and lower P5 schools.

Plus, if rankings are all rigged then why do the teams with the highest ranked recruits always end up being the best teams? Absolutely horrible logic.

Fickell said it himself, if they're keeping score he wants to win (recruiting rankings).

The best teams keep winning because they build up a program. They have extensive Recruiting Departments, Strength/Conditioning Programs and experienced Assistant Coaches.

Here's an example of how the Rankings are cooked. Here's an article from on OSU blog on how EVERY OSU Commit except one dropped in 247Sports Rankings. How's that? Did they all break a leg?

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-s...ports-rankings

No they need to make room at the top of the rankings for the players still being recruited. No one is going to subscribe to a site where all the top recruits are no longer in play. No one gets excited if the only player uncommitted is ranked 45th on your site.

The one player who did go up in rankings jumped up 152 spots! Why? Because that way OSU can still be ranked as Second Overall in Recruiting.

These Recruiting Sites are in it to make a buck. To think otherwise is Horribly Naive.

Because he had never went to a recruiting camp and then finally did and ran a 4.31 (hand time) and jumped out of the building? That's utterly asinine. They shot him up but dropped nearly every other recruit to keep them at 2? How the hell does that make any sense?

Again, you're contradicting yourself. If the top ranked guys are only ranked at the top because top schools are recruiting them, why did OSU guys drop? There's 2 schools on or above OSU. Using your logic, none of them should have dropped.

Read my original post. The reason most of them dropped was because the Rating Service wants to have more uncommitted players ranked higher to drum up interest.

All the commits who dropped went to camps and did well too.

Schools don't rely on Rating Services. They rely upon their own Recruiting Department to evaluate talent. They know the players long before the Services.

If a school like UC waits until the kid is highly ranked its too late. UC best shot is to get to the kids it has an inside track on early- develop a relationship and be the first to offer. The kid will collect his stars when the Big Boys start to show an interest.

I'm not denying that. That still contradicts your original point.

Not all of them.

No duh, however they don't always know the players long before the services. There's always a few kids who break out at a Rivals camp or Nike's Opening camps.

Obviously for the first part. Second part is sometimes true. Other times not.
